Guess what? I'm going to restart Crystal! I kind of screwed up (I was young and foolish). I think I'll pick Cyndaquil.
Any comments?

I started and restarted Crystal many times. I now have completed the events of the game completely. (I just need to complete my dex.) And I picked Cydaquil for this completed time. It's a great pokemon and I was kinda partial to fire (makes sense being a firemaster and all). You'll want to pick up a Bellsprout and train him to be strong against your Rival since he will always pick the type strong to yours. I would also advise you to pick up a Poliwag. He will be a very strong water type when you train him.
That's what I have for now. If you pick up those 2 pokemon you will have the 3 main types. I'll be glad to help on anything. Good luck and keep posting how you are doing!
Sorry to say but Totodile owns all Johto starters.

Looks like you are doing well. Keep it up. If I remember correstly, the first gym uses bird pokemon. Since you don't have an electric pokemon yet, I suggest you just go at it with your starter. The first gym is an easy win.
Also in one of the houses in Violet city, there is a boy that wants to trade an Onix for a Bellsprout. If you go catch another Bellsprout (assuming you don't want to trade the one you already have), you can trade for a rock pokemon that will come in handy if you train him.
@ Tom- Fire might be weak to water, but I will always win with my fire pokemon.

You can skip gyms???
sorta, in the johto region you have lots of freedom after goldenrod city. You have to do some stuff, but after you do that stuff, you have some freedom. You can't skip all the gyms though, but in this case, the programmers wanted you to go to that specific gym first (as shown in the lvls)

That's interesting. I haven't played it for a while and haven't battled the gyms in a couple years so I guess I didn't remember that part. That's cool though. Do you get the badges out of order if you do it that way or what?

Any help with how to cripple Whitny's Miltank? Same team (below).

Does your Butterfree know any moves to poison the foe. If so, it would help wittle away its health while using other stong moves. Try leech seed as well, if you have it. The combo will take away health from the Miltank while keeping you healthy with leech seed. It just an idea. Strong fire blows will help as well.

Be aware that Quilava and Butterfree will be destroyed by Miltank. It knows Rollout and Miltank seems to be very strong. Especially Rollout...

Definitely. If I were you, I would catch a Machop. To do this, get Abra from the Game Corner in Goldenrod, go to the TM floor in the megastore and trade it fro a machop. Then train it up for a little while before going in the Gym. If you haven't battled the trainers in there, at lvl 14-16, battle them with machop. mine was a key part of my team as a Machamp later.

Also remember that there is an area of grass just below the city. You might think about training there if you need it.

Bring in a female pokemon and they will not be able to use Attract on you!

Probably because we didn't think about gender.... Great idea though!:)

one problem Tani: Attract tends to be used when the Miltank/Clefairy are on low health. its somethin I noticed when playing
XD001
04-14-2009, 05:04 AM
I traded an Abra for a Machop. Luckily, it was female. After t16raining, it floored Miltank easily. Sudowoodo didn't put up a fight, easily caught now called Bonsai!

Attract doesn't work on a pokemon of the same gender, so it is a wasted move :p

I have some hints for the next Gym. As its Ecruteak and Ghosts, bring a Normal type with Dig. As there are no abilities dig will wreak havoc, but at the same time be prepared for Curse. It is a key move, along with Shadow Ball
They all know:
Curse
Gastly and one Haunter know: Spite, Shadow Ball, Curse, lick
One Haunter know: Shadow Ball, Curse, Hypnosis Lick
The Gengar is really fast. It knows: Curse, Hypnosis, Dream Eater, Shadow Ball. Be prepared for a tough fight.

Magnemite are great. Most have a very high defense and are great to have. It's a good idea to pick one up.
Eevees are great too. If not just for their evolutions, they make a great normal type pokemon as well.
You could pick up both. It would help out and you could always store them when you aren't using them.

Also if you do get an evee check if it can learn bite that would own the ghost gym.
When i played crystal i used bite and destroyed the gym so im pretty sure it will work for you.

Sounds like a good strong team so far. If you look at the pokemon you have and are wanting to add to your team, you will have 2 water type (Gyarados is actually a dual type but I cannot recall his other type at the moment), 1 fighting type (at least that's what I think Sudowoodo is) and 1 dragon type (Dratini when you get him). You may want to find a grass or bug pokemon and a fire one as well to help balance the team slightly. I suggest a Growlthe if possible. I believe you can find them in the route above Goldenrod. For a grass/bug type, I would go to the Forest to find some good ones. I hope this helps. If you would like help on anything else, just ask. I'd be glad to help! :)

Hmm, she has dragon types. Aparently you should use bug, steel, electric, flying, or ground. That's what it says on http://www.psypokes.com/gsc/atktypeanalysis.php. I check this site a lot when I play Crystal. So far I haven't found any frauds so hopefully this will be correct for you as well.
my Crystal isn't working without my Gameboy Colour, which I lost...
Good luck finding it. If you can't and are in the market to buy a new game system, Gameboy advance SP's are probably getting very cheap if you can buy one used at a Gamestop or somewhere, due to the Nintendo DSi coming out and making everything else out of date. Good luck either way.
