View Full Version : Tier question about Garchomp

I found a list of the Tiers here:
Tournament copy of Tiers (http://forum.pokefarm.com/showthread.php?p=36133#post36133)
But I'm confused as to where Garchomp fits in. I see him in both Uber and OU. Is Garchomp allowed in gym battles or tournaments?

The tournament copy hasn't been fully updated - the individual lists within the battle tower are the fully correct versions. At somepoint this list will be updated to match - in fact I'll probably do that quite soon.
Thanks for bringing it up!
Garchomp is Uber, by the way :)

Although with the addition of platinum moves, we may well see him back in OU, or we may lose some pokes from OU (Salamence is the new chompy, becoming what Dragonite should be)
The metagame is going to evolve very quickly now, so I'm going to expect a couple of changes to occur.
I would outline why Mence is better than chompy right now, but this is the wrong section.

This was discussed in the Tier Authority discussion area & it was decided to leave Garchomp where it is for now. Things may change in the future, but for right now 'Chompy is still Uber.

OK.
Mence is probably something to watch. There is no foolproof counter for it, its just something you have to beat. That becomes difficult with intimidate, making any pokemon with ice shard useless.
The variety of its movepool is better than most too, being able to have special and physical sets, or a mix. This added to the fact that his defences aren't too bad, means he'll almost certainly take out one poke, if not more.

Oh, Salmence is a terror no doubt, especially now that he can get Outrage. But he can be dealt with by existing OU pokemon.
Garchomp still has just enough of an advantage over the rest of OU to keep him out of it.
Garchomps does indeed have a slightly lower attack than Salmence, but it is better everywhere else. It has a 5-10 point stat advantage in HP and defense stats and is strong instead of weak to Rock (which with stealth rock in the game is a big deal). And that 102 speed is just enough to let it outrun a bunch of Pokemon that can stomp it's sibling Salamence.
As I've said. We have a bunch of new Pokemon with a ton of new moves. Things may change. But the Salmence vs Garchomp argument still comes down pretty solidly on the side of Garchomp at the moment.

Unless you factor in dragon dance.

Unless you factor in dragon dance.
If you can get OHKOed by a STABed Outrage or Draco Meteor while you are setting up, you aren't going to win.
And if you just attack instead of dragon dancing, you get outrun & get OHKOed anyway.
Serously, the "Is Garchomp really an Uber?" discussion has been happening on every Pokemon board on the internet. The answer has come down to a resounding "YES!"

I fully respect Chompy being moved, and I'm quite happy about it.
It can't use special sets however, and I have always have had an affinity for dragonite, so I will be a bit biased.
If Salamence gets even 1 DD, weavile and friends are dead. Only thing on my team that could win it is Yanmega due to its HP, but other than that, you'll be just hoping that you can survive a hit and KO it.
Chompy never could set up, so it never had the potential to rip through teams if counters hadn't been done in yet.
Salamence, focus sash, and rapid spin is an unbelievable combination. When I was testing out a team for the open fen gym position, I tested out salamence as a late game sweeper, and had a starmie. The amount of people who got done in is plain silly, despite having a major weakness because I was focused on 2 types/

You're assuming a mence switches into a weavile. If the weavile has ice punch mence is still a goner. If it doesn't then there's lots to do. Personally, I have no problem countering a DD outraging mence. I think we should drop this discussion here for the time being and if necessary move it somewhere else. Almost any poke with outrage is a threat, we can't just start banning all of them.
S Tailor

OK, granted, outrage isn't the biggest thing.
If mence gets as much popularity as chompy did, we'll be back to where we were before we banned chompy, and looking at Shoddy, I can tell you the chances of that happening is fairly high.
Not the right thread, so I'll guess I'll stop, because i don't want it banned after breeding 3 nice ones.

the sad part is, your talking about banning a pokemon for being too strong. or knowing certain moves. every poke has its advantages and disadvantages yes? :) i cant remember EVER being defeated by ANY chomp. instead of banning my befriended mance the fiery UBER depths. why not bring chompy back as an OU ? ;)

You have to understand the reasons for it being moved to Uber to see why it was moved.
EVERY, and I mean every team had one on it (well mine didn't, I prefered playing with Dragonite)
They wanted to open OU up, so they banned chompy.
Chompy also had a better stat distrobution in defences and speed, while still maintaning a very good attack. This made it hard to KO, which was another reason to ban it.
I can't think of any other reasons to ban it off the top of my head, but there will be more, I'm sure
Salamence is beginning to take the first point, and the second point is relevant, as there are so many sets you can neverknow how to counter it

Yes, salamence are very hard to predict, but once you've figured out the set its running, your guaranteed to know what to do and how to counter it. Garchomp's set on the other hand, was always outrage, earthquake, fire blast/fang, and swords dance and always carried a yache berry. that was so broken, along with sand veil bonus.
however, i must point out that this isn't the place or time to be talking about mence possibly being banned to ubers.
Just for the record, I do not have a Garchomp...o_O
I fail to see to your point :T

This is probably my fault as I was the first one to try to explain why chompy was moved to Ubers.
As has been said 2-3 times, the decision has been made. We understand folks miss their Garchomp, we understand that you once beat one.
For Metagame reasons it was necessary to move Garchomp to Ubers. That decision has not changed and will not change until something changes in the Metagame to warrant a reevaluation. Rather than continue to beat a dead horse, just google "Garchomp Uber" and read the zillions of discussion threads on dozens of Pokémon sites to understand why this decision was made.

This is all true. Not to mention the fact, there are a lot of other pokemon you can use besides Garchomp people. You don't have to depend on it! Be creative and interesting..

I never have used Garchomp. I prefer to use Dragonite or Salamence. But there are billions of possibilities so no worries about Garchomp.

this thread isn't about why you aren't using garchomp.
anywho, the question has been answered already.

sorry gengvire, we JUST put up a new thread with the list, as there were a couple scattered around the site previously. Anything outdated that linked to a tier list is probably pointing to one of the old ones that dont exist anymore.
Glad you were able to find it!
