My friend Matt is getting into competitive Pokemon for the first time. I'm helping him plan and put together his first team, which will be for singles and mainly UU battles. I thought I would also post here so I can offer him other people's opinions and advice along with my own.

Feel free to make any suggestions to improve the overall coherence/efficiency of this team. It is still in the planning stage and none of these have been bred yet. My friend really wants to use Ludicolo and Hariyama so those two species are staying in. Pretty much anything else can be changed, however.

Ludicolo, Swift Swim, Modest @ Life Orb / Wet Rock
EVs: 252 Sp.Atk / 252 Spd / 4 Sp.Def
- Rain Dance, Surf, Grass Knot, Ice Beam
A standard special sweeper Ludicolo. Sets up the rain and then hopefully hits hard. Item is still undecided on: Wet Rock if Claydol (below) doesn't get Rain Dance, or Life Orb if it does.

Hariyama, Thick Fat, Careful @ Leftovers
EVs: 112 HP / 140 Def / 252 SpD / 4 Spd
- Substitute, Focus Punch, Payback, Bulk Up / Stone Edge / Ice Punch
Bulky Sub-Puncher. Fourth move still undecided on. I personally favor Bulk Up Hariyama, but Stone Edge would also be useful since there are no other rock attacks on this team in its current iteration.

Skarmory, Keen Eye, Impish @ Leftovers / Wacan Berry
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 Atk
- Roost, Steel Wing, Stealth Rock/Spikes, Whirlwind
Physical wall. Trying Steel Wing over Drill Peck or Brave Bird because my friend likes the defense boost proc. Spiking move of choice is currently Stealth Rock, but in case Claydol ends up getting Stealth Rock, that will get changed to plain Spikes.

Lanturn, Volt Absorb, Calm @ Leftovers / Lum Berry
EVs: 40 HP / 136 SpA / 252 SpD / 80 Spd
- Rest/Stockpile, Sleep Talk/Swallow, Thunder Wave, Surf/Thunder/Ice Beam
Special tank. Lanturn's moveset is definitely undecided right now. Thunder Wave is probably a given. My friend can't decide if he wants to run a Rest-Talk set or a more generic Stockpile-based set. Comments on making Lanturn as effective a special tank as possible will be especially appreciated.

Electivire, Motor Drive, Adamant / Jolly @ Expert Belt / Life Orb
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Spd / 6 HP
- Meditate / Screech / Thunder, Thunder Punch, Ice Punch / Earthquake, Cross Chop / Earthquake
Physical sweeping Electivire, but may be changed to a mixed sweeper instead (that's why Thunder is listed). I have never used mixed Electivire personally but on paper it looks good. What natures are the best for a mixed one?

Claydol, Levitate, Calm @ Lum Berry / Wet Rock
EVs: 252 HP / 144 Sp. Def / 114 Sp.Atk
- Toxic/Rain Dance, Rapid Spin, Earth Power, Shadow Ball
Backup special tank and general utility. May get Rain Dance if my friend decides his Ludicolo needs backup for setting up the rainstorm. Otherwise, may get Stealth Rock so Skarmory can have Spikes instead.

This looks like a really cool team. Everything seems good to me so far. Though, with Claydol, I'm not sure how good it is for setting up a rain dance. Especially when confronted with a water type. I find cosmic power (a level up move) on Claydol works really well, boosting both it's excellent defenses. That helps improve it's tanking ability combined with toxic. Or, your friend could put the defensive evs into physical defense and use calm mind to boost special attack and special defense, thus making it a more effective tank with some attacking power.

Thanks, man! :)

With regard to Claydol, I find it's a decent choice for setting up weather effects. Maybe not the ideal choice for rain, since it does have that water weakness. But I feel like it's a reasonable choice in this case because it has two other important features: Levitate and Rapid Spin. It also has good defenses, so it can take special hits well and back Lanturn up. I wouldn't usually want to leave Claydol in against a water type anyway, if I had a choice, and non-water-types often won't be carrying water moves. But your comments are helpful! I will definitely suggest Cosmic Power.
