View Full Version : Role of a Moderator

Hello all. I would like to explain a bit about my position as a Moderator. I have the task of deciding what is right for the forums. I make judgments based on the information given to me in your post and as described in the FAQ. I don't hold friendship over these judgments, meaning if you are my friend you don't outrank the rules. The rules are #1 to me as a Moderator.

I also have a life outside of PokeFarm. Right now with my family, job, and PokeFarm I am being run 24/7. I have cut back on my PokeFarm these last couple of days. I would also like to take this time to comment on PMing me. I get PMs that ask questions that could be answered by posting in the Q & A section, please use that section for those. Not that I don't care, but I am not the sole authority on all things Pokemon. I get PMs asking about how to breed this or that Pokemon, again Q & A and I am not the Pokemon Breeding Authority. I have friends that PM me asking for advice and Buzz is more then happy to help, but if you just PM me out of the blue and that PM is the first time we have every talked, I don't like meeting new friends that way.

I receive PMs from members about other members. That is fine and I can check into it, but when you PM about a problem it is good to have links to post or forward a PM if they were being rude in a PM. Saying Member X is posting means things, I then have to search for member X and find all their post and then find the posts you were talking about. That is very time consuming.

Also I had a member point out that with some of the infractions that I give, that maybe the members are doing it on purpose. If that is the case, I can assure you I will not crack and just give up. I enforce rules for a living at my job.

I have had members say I was being mean and hurt their feelings. I have calmed down alot on how I reply to people. I don't go out to hurt feelings. I had to adjust to the fact that this site deals with younger members then most other forums. I think I have adjusted.

Just to show my fairness. This thread will not be closed to keep comments out. I want to hear your comments. Tell me what you think I need to improve on. Also anything said about me in this thread will not have infractions given to the poster. As long as it does not involve profanity. I want to hear what I am doing wrong and why members feel I am being rude.

Just to be clear, I will not give infractions to anyone that post any comments on me as it pertains to my Moderating.

Just remember this rule is still in effect.
1. No lewd, vulgar or profane content. Some of the types of posts we do not allow include pornography, graphic description of sexual acts, pictures or graphic depictions of agony, excessive vulgarity, etc.

I think your doing an awesome job as a Mod. I understand following the rules. Besides I think you rock at this and you have even given me an infraction before. I like you because your fair and you care about the forum.:-D

Nak

I agree. I've received an infraction from Buzz myself. I'm not proud of it for what it is, but rather because my friend is fair and is doing his job well. It's not easy being a Moderator. If you are given an infraction, it's not about you. We're neither excempting you nor picking on you. You get an infraction (or rep point for that matter) for the things you do. A Moderator's job is not to be friendly with the members, but to keep the forum member-friendly. There's a huge difference.

The real Buzz is different from the Mod Buzz. He is a very pleasant man and anyone will find that out easily. If he gives an infraction, that's part of his job. Deal with it and correct yourself. Like I've said, infractions aren't for "hurting your feelings" and they are not about you. If you get an infraction, stop before you whine. Consider the situation you've put yourself into and learn from it. Improve and be a better member that in turn betters the forum. That is a Moderator's role.

Wow I was expecting to come home from work and this thread would be filled with comments. I am glad that those that commented had nice things to say. I really did want to hear comments from the negative side of my persona. Like Nak pointed out, I know it may seem like I am picking on just you, but I give infractions to other people as well. I don't single anyone out. There are members that at some point I don't agree with and for the most part we just don't get along, but truthfully I have never gave any infraction to a person I don't get along with. I have given more to people I am friends with and to most of the members I gave infractions to, I don't really know any of them until I give them an infraction.

Just for the record, there is no member on this site that I don't like. I sometimes disagree with other members and even have had little arguments, but I don't dislike them. There is enough hate in the world, and none of it should come from a video game.

Sorry, for the 5:45 AM rantings of a tired old man he-he.

I can't do that. I have Gym Battles I must do. Runner and I keep going in circles. I miss the AM battles and he misses the PM battles. Most of the battles I have missed were do to work though. I have today off and tonight off. I need to get stuff done at our new house and with Pokemon. I can sleep when everything is done.

I have had this sleeping disorder since I was born. I would not sleep even as a baby. My body can go on as little as 15 minutes of sleep. However on days that I crash, I can sleep for 20 hours he-he. That happens about once a month. Most normal days I get about 2-4 hours of sleep.

I know my first post touched on this, but I want to update it so all the new people understand.

I am a Moderator. PMing me with questions that should be asked in Q & A is really quite annoying. I get constant PMs asking about farming, how to do this, infractions, and what color should I dye my toe hair. The only PMs I should get is about problems with the site, infractions, post problems, and other general questions pertaining to the site. Well infraction PMs should not be a main concern anymore. There is a section about infractions in the FAQ. Also PMing to argue infractions, not fun for me or you. Also PMing with a title Question (Please don't ignore) or (Don't Delete) or something to that effect, only angers me. I get a PM from the same people and everytime it says something like that. In the 1,001 PMs you sent me earlier did I ignore any of them? No, I don't do that. I read every PM no matter how annoying it has become.

I even started an Ask the Farmer Thread in my farm sub-forum to stop PMs about farming related questions. There is 500+ members here, and each one of them just as qualified as I to give information. It is better to ask the forum and receive multiple reviews on the subject. It may just lead to you finding a new way to do something.

Thank you.

Yeah buzz you have given me a few infractions too and when i asked about them you explained what they were for more clearly and i think it was very fair. Also i kind of pmed you about a few things that probably i could have found out by posting thanks but ill keep that idea of posting on the forums in mind lol.:D

I have one small request. Could people stop PMing me asking for random Pokemon? I mean I don't have tons of Pokemon on stock. I keep my boxes full of IV Pokemon and my current farm events. Also PMing me to ask about your move-set falls into this group. I need my PMs to be forum related. I have ask the Stable Master thread for all your Pokemon breeding needs. PokeFarm also has a forum to ask questions in. It also has sections to request trades for certain Pokemon.

I know this will be asked, but nana nettie you are still allowed to PM for help. My friends I like to get PMs from. Alot of other members I have never seen online before their PM, that is not cool.

So for breeding questions remember, Ask the Stable Master. (http://forum.pokefarm.com/showthread.php?t=2634)

Ya, Buzz, you've done a super job being a Mod. Like others are saying, you ARE fair, and you don't give someone a hard time just because you dislike them. I really doubt Pokefarm would well without you (or Nak).

IS there a MOD feature that allows you to only accept PM's from those on the buddy list? Then, when someone want to challenge, they post it and you add them to your buddy list so they can send the request pm or you send them one and they can reply to it, etc. Wil lcut down on the randomness, if its available.

Charon
12-24-2007, 03:36 PM
That would be impractical really, as there are so many things that someone could legitimately need to contact a mod about other than challenges.

Korath

well, that is what the report post feature is for.

Fautor Animus
12-24-2007, 03:54 PM
What if someone wants to randomly ask your for your personal help and don't want it told to everyone, as I, and other members have encountered? If they weren't on your buddy list, communication would be hard.

Charon
12-24-2007, 04:04 PM
There are times when I've had legitimate things to discuss with Buzz that weren't at all related to peoples posts being incorrect and so wouldn't have been right to use the report post function on.

As a mod on another forum I hate it when people use the report post function for incorrect reasons :|

Viscosity

I agree with Charon. Restricting a mod to only receiving PMs from select users would only limit them.

BugCatcher6
12-24-2007, 05:33 PM
I feel as if people are getting the wrong idea with my complaints of PMs. I can't and won't do the receive PMs from those on my buddy list, it is correct that I need to be able to receive all PMs.

The questions I am referring to are the ones asking me what moves your Bulbasaur should have. Questions asking what are IVs and EVs. Questions asking where can I find the Draco Plate. All of those are questions for the forum. I should not get 25 PMs a day on how do I breed my Piplup to have a Calm Nature. Questions like these have been asked and answered daily in the forums. I have wrote guides on IVs, EVs, and breeding.

Questions like this also I cannot answer so belnumcree please stop PMing me asking what sweater your dog should wear in the family portrait. That was a joke people, but belnumcree seriously, the sweater with the bunny is fine.

I was unsure if you would remember that joke from a post oh so long ago.

Just do what I do and send your questions to Buzz in the form of reputation points. Man, he ALWAYS responds to those!

I only responded to that question in the Reputation points because I had just got a PM that day asking, "I need a Murkrow really really BADLY". I have Pearl version, Murkrow is a Diamond version Pokemon, well I have Diamond as well, but I don't trade from it.

Also to the rest of the forum members, I know I have been a bit crabby lately, but that in no way effects my Infraction giving. Infractions are not given by my mood, but by the rules here. I have a 3 year old son and I know how it is to get a child to listen to rules, but I thought our members were a bit older. Gamegeezer being the exception.

I need to vent. I had some trouble on the forum today and it made me feel as if I was garbage. So a few new ground rules for the BugCatcher.

I am no longer going to argue infractions.
If I give you an infraction, don't PM save your finger strength.
If you think I am mean and nasty, I am not going to comment on it.
Same way if I see a post or PM that says I am being unfair, I better not see a post or PM asking for my help.
Same say I am overdoing it with this no tournament or trades if you have high infractions.
My new policy is no trading for my Pokemon if you have 1 infraction.
I will no longer answer questions of members with infractions.
This includes PMs and my Ask the Stable Master.
I read every PM I am sent and reply to them.
From now on I will look at them and if it is a question that could be asked in the forum, I will just delete it. You know with people that think I am mean and nasty, I have feelings and I am tired of it. Nobody here has ever seen how mean and nasty I can be and nobody ever will.

There is only so long people can say I am mean and then ask for my help. I found that breaking point today.

Nobody works harder then me to keep things running smooth. Nobody does it with more heart and determination. Nobody can have people think negatively of them and keep going, nobody.

:( I'm sorry people are being so rude to you BugCatcher. I don't think people fully realize what type of pressure and responsibility a Moderator goes through -- and it's not like you're ONLY a moderator either! You've got your Farm, Gym, and Elite4 stuff! Then there's your personal life and all the pressure and responsibility that comes from that.

Maybe you could use some time off from being a full time moderator -- isn't there another mod that can pick up the slack while you get a few days for yourself?

I just think that completely ignoring users with even a single point infraction might be too harsh and you're just using it as an opportunity to vent.

I resigned from the Elite 4. The single infraction was geared more towards those that get an infraction and then want to argue it as me being mean and picking on them. There are members that I gave infractions to and are friends with now. There are friends that I had to give infractions to.

I don't know where people think I am out to get them, but really I only go by the rules set in front of me.

Also I don't want my words to make it sound as if I am full of myself. There are other members that work just as hard to get the information people need, but I am just the one speaking out against feeling like I am being taken advantage of.

I agree that whenever you receive a post arguing an infraction, just ignore it. 99.9% of the time, their argument will not help their case.

I know how all this must sound. Poor BugCatcher, he has the highest reputation points. He went from a Farmers' Market bargain shopper to awesome farmer, to killer Gym Leader, to Moderator, and then to Administrator, he has it so rough. Truth, reputation points mean nothing. I prefer some credit. If you PM me asking how to get your Pokemon to know move x , y, and z and then you mass farm them for an event, drop a bit of thanks bug for the move-set help.

I mean I guess the reputation points show that, but I mainly get the points from the same people and not everyone. I just would like to see a thank you. I know of other members that get tons of PM questions and never get the public thank you. I know I have said this before, but instead of a bad week these last 2 months have been rough for me. Just an excuse to feel sorry for myself maybe.

I am sorry you have gotten angry and stressed out by the sounds of it. To all of the members of Pokefarm that receive a Infraction and think Buzz is a big mean guy you guys are wrong I will tell you all that I received my first infraction today and it was my own fault there is honestly no point in arguing about it because Buzz doesn't give them out for no reason he gives them out because you have either done something wrong (or stupid like me) just take the infraction and get over it as I found out today my Infraction will expire so there is no need to cause Buzz or anyone any drama just over an Infraction that you have earnt yourself. Buzz is a really nice guy and he has helped me out alot with trades and questions that I have asked him so just cut him some slack and be nice to him and you never know you might become great friends.

I have been part of the forum since the first day that you joined and I can honestly say that I do not enjoy a member more than you. You are the best and thank you! O.K. I am having the same troubles again. I tried being nice about the constant barrage of PMs asking how to do this or that. This site incase some of you have not noticed is a forum. The idea of the forum is to ask questions and have forum members answer them. This is PokeFarm, not The Source Buzz. I even created the Thread Ask the Stable Master (http://forum.pokefarm.com/showthread.php?t=2634).

I have tried being nice and I have tried posting in the forum to let people know that I am not liking this. It does not work. So now it is time for tough love the only way BugCatcher knows how. From this point on, anyone that constantly PMs me asking me questions that can be asked in the forum will get hit with a 100 Point Bugging the Buzz infraction which will result in a 5 day ban from the forum.

I know there will be people PMing me about this or posting about it here, so I am not singling any one person out. I get alot of PMs everyday from different people. I should only get PMs that deal with forum problems, questions on where to post, and PMs saying how are you doing today.

I know I have a 5000 PM limit for my inbox, but I don't need them all to be questions. I had so many the other day that I was not effectively able to explain to a member that their problem with something another member said, was a misunderstanding. I ended up I had to give the member being reported an infraction and it was later reversed. I know sounds like a small mix up, but I had to listen to complaints from both parties and I feel I got treated poorly for the way I had to deal with it.

To the other people that PM me, I think people know by know who I enjoy PMs from and who I don't. I know this sounds like favoritism, but the people I don't mind getting PMs from also PM me about other things besides for help.

I am so tired of new members before they even post once on the forum, they drop me a PM asking for help.

I wasn't trying to break up your PM free day I promise
I hadn't realised you were counting hours until I checked this thread just now. If I had, I'd have waited until tomorrow

He really needs to add "jk" to his posts because they always get mistaken as allegations. No Buzz, allegation is not the same thing as alliteration.

Haha.
I didn't put Nak up to that, I swear XD

Anyhow, it was a PM saying I'd leave him alone. That has to count for something, right? ^^

That is o.k. guys. I just got flooded with PMs from a new member that was cursing me up and down because he could not post. He told me As a moderator I should reply to all PMs, which I was not online. I did reply back and he logged as soon as I did. He wanted to be a member so he could teach this forum and the Gym Leaders why hacked Pokemon are better then bred Pokemon, um duh. So I denied him his join request. I still think it was a current member trying to get on my nerves. When I checked his IP Address both of the new members requesting to join the site had the same IP Address and the same IP Address as 2 current members. Also found that those 2 current members were the same person as well, both current members had the same name in their e-mail address, just threw different e-mail providers.

Alot of information to sift threw. I think the member that the IP Address is linked to, battled me the other day and his wi-fi kept losing connection. I told him that we should try again when his connection was better and he got kinda upset.

Also this I should not mention either, but I think it is something that needs to be shared and maybe help other members think a bit. We had a few members get banned awhile back. They were only 5 day soft bans and 2 of those banned members decided to make new accounts instead of waiting 5 days. So they got a 30 day ban for this. During this process I noticed some of the information was similar and did an IP Address search and I gave a 30 day ban to any member with the IP Address of the banned members.

One of those members was T roo and during the process of making a new account cheese108's IP Address showed the same as T roo's and cheese got banned as well. I explained to cheese what happen after their ban was done. Funny story T roo said that cheese was a friend and not T roo, but after making new accounts, it was not very believable. The other member that got banned for the same thing, his banned expired the other day and I have not seen him back, but he created about 6 other accounts just to get back on an harass me.

I have a question, I've never been banned, but when you do ban someone, there's a little field where you can input msg's. Does the banned person see that msg or is that just a little note to yourself about the ban?

As far as I know the message is just for Administrators and Moderators, but there is a generic e-mail sent.

Oh and I told all the Moderators to be watching you. Always into trouble and buying your way out of it with brownies. That is why I brought in new Moderators. I am a fat guy and brownies are my Kryptonite.

Na just joking, or am I.

Not to break the current topic, but I just got to this, and Buzz your late. I was bought out before the promotion. :D (Her cookies are just as good as the brownies.)

O.K. you are about to lose your geek status. I said something towards nettie about how evil she was and I ended the post with just for Nak's sake j/k. So everyone knows I was joking about nettie being evil.

All this time though, I don't believe I ever got brownies.
