Custom Avatars?

Yeah, so, I'm sorry for posting a "dumb noobie" question, but how can we get custom avatars? I've looked in my UserCP but can only seem to choose avatars from a set list... but some users have avatars that aren't on that list, so I was wondering how to get them??

No Custom avatars.

And the avatars you see that aren't on the list are awarded for things like beating gyms etc. :-D
