Mewtwo will appear at random at the end of a multi-player match and challenge the winner. He will be unlocked as a selectable character after he is defeated. Alternately, play 20 hours in melee vs. mode (combined number of human players times the number of hours). For example, if you play 1 human player vs. 3 CPU players, play 20 hours; 2 players vs. 2 CPU players, play 10 hours; 3 players vs. 1 CPU player, 7 hours; 4 player vs., 5 hours. To get Mewtwo easily, go into Custom Rules Melee and change "Stock" to "3" and "Item Flow" to "None", and "Stock Time Limit" to "Off". Choose two of your best characters (for fighting Mewtwo) and go into a match in the Pokemon Stadium level. Place both fighters on the Pokeball in the middle. Do not pause the game. Unplug the controllers, and leave the system on overnight to accumulate game time. Plug in the controllers again, and have one of the fighters die three times. If enough hours have been accumulated, Mewtwo will challenge you. Defeat him to unlock him as a playable character.

To unlock Mewtwo, play in VS. Mode for either 20 hours or play 700 matches in that mode. After either requirement is met, Mewtwo will challenge you; beat him.

Yes, it is true that you either need to play 20 combined hours on Vs. Mode, or play 700 matches on Vs. mode. To unlock Events 31-39, you need to unlock Jigglypuff, Luigi, Dr. Mario, Falco and Young Link and have cleared Events 1-30. To unlock Events 40-50, you need to have unlocked all of the hidden characters, and to unlock Event 51, you need to have cleared all of the Events 1-50.

All unlockables are unlocked by either time or battles played. Mewtwo is just an earlier character unlocked, my sugestion is to get some friends over and play the game. That's what I did and I now have all the characters ,stages, and event battles.

At least you don't want Mr. game and Watch, that's about 2000 battles.
you need to have like 70 matches I think.

The stars under your character is like to keep track of the winner, or something... the more wins the more stars for me.

You guys should look up advanced techniques for super smash bros. Specifically, wave dashing. Definitely a good move. A friend of mine won a super smash bros. tournament using that technique and psyched everybody out. Now everyone is using it (except me =( ). I'm a bit old school and just stick to shield grab, and SMASH. Both ways work good, either way. Heck, i get my wins in for sure.:D
