Why is it a Water/ FLYING type?
It can't learn Fly or any other flying-type attacks.
Is there some benefit here?

It loses it's weakness to Grass and Ground. And messes with peoples heads. lol

It should have been dragon. But if it was it would be the ultimate pokemon. without the 4x to electrics it would be a beast. Oh and Gyrados can fly just not in the game.

In regards to the fly thing. I think he just refuses to carry people. Therefore he refuses to learn the move. lol :D

As I've said for months, Gyarados should learn Bravebird! In my opinion, if Blaziken can, so should Gyara. Not that I'd use it, mind you, but it would be fun.

well, getting back onto topic... Gyrados is just like charizard, a pseudo-dragon if you will, learning dragon dance/rage.
I've also read on another forum (just a past rumor) that milotic was going to be a female gender pokemon. just guess on whose its male counterpart was going to be.

I'm sorry, but the word "kentucky" sounds really funny and out of place in a French sentence, just an observation.

In chinese Mythology dragons are violent and aggressive, but not intrinsicly evil like they are in the west. They are said to start out as Carp that have grown for 1000 years without being killed, and spontaniously transform into full dragons when they reach the right age.
These dragons have snake like bodies and command the wind and the water to do their bidding. They fly through the air calling up storms and floods.
So Gyrados is a water/flying type to account for his mythical origins of being master of the water and the air. He starts out as Magicarp and evolves for the same reason.
As for not being a Dragon, I kind of agree that it could have easily gone that way, but back in 1st Gen Pokemon, the only dragons were the Dratini family. There weren't even any Dragon Legends yet.
In the myths I have read, the Chinese Dragons are actually more about being lords of the wind and water than they are about being Dragons, so it actually fits that they are in the Dragon Egg Group, but are Water/Flying.
If we look at their moves, they Learn Rain Dance by level up, reflecting their mytical origin. The main Dragon move they learn is Twister, which is sort of a Dragonish Tornado.
All in all, I think Gyrados is very much in keeping with his mythological origin.

i distinctly remember being able to fly on a gyaridos...or was that in first/second gen? O.o
gyrados probably would have been dragon type too if they had pokemon that were three types, but they dont, so they stuck with what REAL dragons are, lords/gods/kings/whatever you wnat to call thems of the air(flying type) and the water(water type) and it cant learn fly because its got puny little wings

I think it's because then palkia and gyarados would be the same types therefore the lustrous orb would work on gyarados too.

Except that they came up with Gyarados ten years before Palkia? C=

Kingra's the same type as palkia too and lustrous orb doesn't work on it.

Though it should.... Yeah, Gyarados is just one of those pokemon that has a identity issue. The idea is that Gyarados would be too powerful, so they had to make it 4x weak to something or other. Also, they probably thought water/dragon was a bit redundant so they made it a pseudo dragon. :P Of course with Kingdra, that idea becae nil. Go KINGDRA!!!

A Flying/Dragon would be like 100X Weak to Ice right?

Nope only 4x. Water/dragon is the 2nd best typing IMO. Only one weakness dragon which is a rare move type. Dark/ghost is the obvious best. No weakness at all.
