My daughter saw a commercial yesterday about the movie.
A preview of the movie will be shown this Friday 2/1/08 during a Pokemon Diamond/Pearl marathon.
There is also some new news of the movie on Serebii.

According to wikipedia, the movie will be shown on Cartoon Network in March.

You have got to be the only Gym Leader/Assistant that likes Legendaries he-he.
I posted about the Cartoon Network thing last week, but I had no other information besides what they gave on the channel.

Dragonite is a very cool pokemon. He is definitely one of my top six all time favourites.
So as for Darkrai, does this mean there'll be an english darkrai on the scene shortly? If so, there's no way the event will come to Australia, so please, someone grab an extra darkrai for meeee! He-he

Apparently they'll eventually be releasing info about how to get Darkrai, so the site says amidst all sorts of tiny sneak peaks.

I was home babysitting today and saw the pokemon episode this afternoon and they had a commercial for this Fridays pokemon marathon. I haven't seen the one where they have dual battles in Sinnoh so I am kinda interested to see that one. The preview is just added goodness!
Edit: Hehe, just saw the post above (posted mer seconds before this one). No wonder I hadn't seen it yet. :)

I wonder if they will do the event by Wifi this time other then having to go to a location. I can't wait. One of my goals for D/P is to catch them all even the legendary and events. I remember back in the day when I got all 150, it felt so good, as I was the only one in my circle to do it. Now with over 400 it seems I'll never do it. I'm close thought. The movie should be great too. Its just too bad they don't go to the theaters anymore. I went to the first 3, I think Spell of the Unknown as the last Pokemon movie they release to theaters. Well I think the 4th one was, but I didn't even know it had come out until I saw it on DVD.

It would be nice though if darkrai could be given over wi-fi (mystery gift), would be easier for non-NA residents.

I'm guessing that while we will eventually get Darkrai, there won't be an event at a retail store to go along with the movie. There just isn't time.
When they did the Manaphy event, there were announcements at least a month ahead of time in Nintendo Power and online. We only have a little under three weeks between this announcement and the movie.
I'm guessing they are going to want to make a big deal out of the Darkrai giveaway, so we should have plenty of warning before it happens.
Of course, this is all pure speculation.

I'm not sure if they'll do an exclusive Wifi thing, but possibly a mixed deal. The argument can go both ways. People can't go out to the event to get the Pokemon, or people don't have the access to WiFi to get it, either. I've heard that some people have seen posters about downloading Darkrai at Toys R Us, but I've been searching for pictures of said poster, but no dice thus far.
Either way, I'll definitely be doing whatever it takes to get a Darkrai. I went out to get the Manaphy, and that went all smoothly, it's just a matter of getting there.

I wonder if, during the movie, like on a commercial or something, they'll be like, "Get on WiFi right now to download your Darkrai!"

Hehe, same here. I had to set it up under the scrutiny of rolled eyes from my wife. I also have it taping episodes since I am normally at work in the morning or mid afternoon when they put them on. So I am kinda worried that the 26 will fill up my Tivo and start kicking other shows I have not seen off. o~o
The worse thing is when we are out and my wife sees the commercial for it, happened last night at a pizza pub, and has to point out that I am taping it in a fairly loud voice. I now have to respond with the deep manly voice of "Shuuuut iiiitt." to make up for it and appear manly in the publics eye. l~O-O~l <---me flexing my muscles

I think that if we haven't heard any leaks about "get Darkrai over wifi during the Cartoon Network movie!", it probably means it isn't going to happen.
If they *were* going to give it away during the movie every ad we are seeing would be screaming about it. There would be all kinds of special posters and inserts in Nintendo Power about "make sure to watch the movie for a special gift!"
I'm thinking that if there is going to be an event, it will be like the ToysRus events and timed to coordinate with the release of the DVD. Just like Manaphy.
Bulbapedia is reporting that the movie will come out on DVD in Region 1 (aka North America) on May 27.
http://bulbanews.bulbagarden.net/wiki/%27The_Rise_of_Darkrai%27_DVD_begins_sale_May_27
If their previous timeline holds, we will start seeing offical announcments of an event in early to mid March.
Sorry folks. I just don't think that Cartoon Network showing the movie = Getting Darkrai:(
SpaceMonkeySteve
02-21-2008, 11:58 PM
Yeah, that was mostly wishful thinking.
What makes me mad is that I've heard rumors that some Toys R Us stores have posters up saying the download will be in April, but I've searched high and low for pictures/scans of this alleged poster, and no luck thus far.

I really doubt that they'd would do something like that. And if they do, I'm sure there would be a different one later, that actually advertised. There may be differences between the two, but I really doubt that Nintendo would say, okay, there's zero notice, but you can download this for the next two hours, and never ever again!

I know it's very dramatic to see Ash running up the stairs, but really, why couldn't they put the control panel on the first floor? And why is there no elevator?
And if I knew a music record was going to save the world one day, I'd probably put a giant sign that says HERE IT IS! instead of hoping my grandchild will one day figure it out.
True, but if real-world logic was applied to movies, there'd be no plot for the movies :-P

It was based on the Pokemon Ranger movie. Manaphy and May became friends, and there was a scene where Manaphy tries to retrieve the bandana May always wears when she lost it. I guess Nintendo was just being cheap when they figured a Red Scarf would do. XP

Also how many people before the movie, thought Darkrai was an evil Pokémon?
Anyone catch the Lunar Wing reference also?
I thought the special moves, Dark Void, Spacial Rend, and Roar Of Time would have more special effects. For a cartoon movie, the effects and artwork was killer.

Well, I heard that it was good in the movie, but every in game reference makes it out to be evil, which is saying something, because the game NEVER does that for any other Pokemon. They get sorta close with a few legends, but never as close as they do with Darkrai.
If you're like me, you try to keep facts about the anime and facts about the game seperate.
So I'd say that game-Darkrai is evil, and anime-Darkrai is not.

Game pokemon tend to be more like animals whereas the cartoon pokemon tend to be more conscious of society. So saying game Darkrai is evil is like saying a snake is evil b/c it bites people with venom.

That's how a vast majority of Pokemon are portrayed, but, from what I've heard about the game event to get Darkrai, the game makes references to Darkrai enjoying terrifying people. I don't know for sure, because I haven't seen a textdump of the event, but that was the general impression I'd gotten from people who had.

I actually squirted a few tears during the movie. Did anyone catch references to how fair play and team work go into everything Pokemon is about? How after a battle the trainers are still nice to each other?
Will watching I was thinking, man I wish Pokemon played like the show. I mean to low evolves or Pokemon not considered the best and they are great on the show because of the trainer.

@Buzz: A lot of people are still good sports when it comes to pokemon. Do you read Penny Arcade? One of the authors, Gabe I think, had a similar experience when he went to join a tournament.
Penny Arcade: by Gabe
I showed up at the Alderwood mall Gamestop and entered my name. As the little kids poured in I became less and less convinced I should participate. The little boys with their Pokemon backpacks and the girls with tiny Pokeballs in their hair seemed to assume I was just someones Dad rather than their competition. It was actually really cool to see how much these kids love Pokemon. I've been so into it recently that I think I'd forgotten I should be having fun. With my pages of hand written math and charts of carefully plotted out EV training regiments I actually felt sort of dirty. These little kids were showing me teams comprised not of statistically optimal Pokemon but of their favorites. A little girl talked to me for five minutes about why she loved Kyogre so much. When she asked why I used Rotom I couldn't bring myself to tell her that his ghost/electric type meant he had a lot of immunities while giving him some surprising moves that should allow me to cripple sweepers with status effects but still fight off any Dark types I encounter. "I think he's cute." I explained. She smiled and nodded as though this was the reason she had expected to hear.
I noticed one of the kids there was actually quite a bit older than the rest of the group. Still probably half my age, but he towered over his opponents. I watched as he struck up conversations with the other children, inspecting their Pokemon and always finding them lacking. "I've EV trained my entire party." he said to a few of the kids who obviously had no idea what that meant. He showed of his multiple "shinies" to a couple of very impressed young men before explaining that he wasn't going to use them in the tournament because it just wouldn't be fair to everyone else. No, he would dominate them with a mixed bag of EV trained legendaries and obscure all stars culled from every single incarnation of the series. He was essentially being a little ****.
I had just decided to pull myself out of the tournament in order to let the kids have their fun when Cory, who was running the show told me he'd matched me up against the little loudmouth in the first round. I figured I might have a chance to take him out and then none of the other kids would have to face him. So I stayed in and when it came time to play I synced up my DS and loaded my fairly mundane crew. It worked out that we were standing on the wrong sides of the television so his team showed up on my side and mine on his. The crowd of kids around me cheered and congratulated me on such an impressive roster. I explained that those were his and that mine were on the other side. "You really need to play more." one of the younger boys instructed. I agreed and selected my three Pokemon to take into battle. A few of the kids behind me would shake their heads in disgust as my finger hovered over each possible selection. My opponent, in what I can only assume was an attempt to show off grossly underestimated this old man's skillz. He tried to pull off an extremely risky strategy involving the near sacrifice of his first Pokemon for a "baton pass" maneuver and a quick stat boost to his second in line. This failed miserably as the aforementioned Rotom I pulled in did not give two **** about anything he hit me with. Once I'd taken him out I moved to the next round but really had no desire to continue. I played my opponent but then bowed out and gave him a free pass onto the next round. The young man I played earlier kept approaching me and telling me he could have beat me easy, he just used the wrong Pokemon. I nodded, yes well that's sort of the whole game.
I watched a bit more of the tournament and I was really impressed with the sportsmanship of the kids. I've been watching the cartoon with Gabe and it really stresses the importance of winning and losing graciously. Each of these kids when they lost shook the others hand and thanked them for the match. The winners complimented the losers Pokemon and strategies while impressing on them that it really was a very close game. I know they weren't my kids but as a thirty year old gamer with a kid of my own I could not help but be extremely proud of all of them. Their passion for the game was totally infectious and I've decided to throw away my spreadsheets. I'm no longer hatching five eggs at a time in order to find babies with the optimal natures and stats. I've also brought Beautifly back into my team. She's not very tough, but I like her, she's pretty.
:) It's really quite a moving story. It's one of the reasons I don't like to battle -- most of the time there's not enough heart (which is kind of a corny thing to say).

@Buzz: A lot of people are still good sports when it comes to pokemon. Do you read Penny Arcade? One of the authors, Gabe I think, had a similar experience when he went to join a tournament.

That is a great story.
You know before I was a Gym Leader, I fought hard to not be a Gym Leader. I never battled against another person. I knew I would get competitive and sometimes I let my emotions get the best of me. I have been really working on it, but I have slipped a few times.
One thing I have learned as a Gym Leader, you can't battle with your favorites and expect to win. Alot of other trainers are out to just win. Loading up on the strongest Pokemon are not my idea of a fun battle. If your opponent has no chance of doing anything, then what is the point of calling it a battle. I am not saying that people that use all the big Pokemon are doing it wrong, but for those that do use them, I don't see how they can boast about a win.

I used to run tournaments for the now defunct Star Wars CCG put out by Decipher. There were one or two power players at each tournament but, after a while I was able to turn these power players into mentors and it all worked out for the better.
I think the clincher for this was when a few of the power players went to a tournament in the next state and lost bad. Because they were battling against inferior players with poor card pools they simply were not ready to fight real opponents.
Some of those heavy hitters dropped out while the good ones began doing more trading with the younger kids and helping those kids develop better strategies.
Because I was the tournament director I only played when a kid scored a bye for the round. Our games were never for points but it gave the kid something to do. Yeah, I always crushed them but I did it with style. Some of those kids still talk about the day my pack of jawas sucked Vader up into a sandcrawler and destroyed him!
After each game (sometimes during) I also gave the kids tips and pointers on how to improve their deck and strategy.

That is something I would like to do more of here. I know I am not the best battler and sometimes my teams don't jell right, but I have alot of knowledge on what works.
I hope with the Breeders and Battlers classes some of the members taking the class will learn a few tricks.

Now thats a game I have not heard of in forever. I played that religiously all throughout high school and early college. Probably one of the most fun CCG games out there. Too bad its pretty much dead. Really hard finding anyone around here to play it. My wife keeps telling me to throw away all my cards which are in boxes that take up the whole underside of queen sized bed but I just can't do it. I guess pokemon is the next evolution except instead of cardboard boxes full of Talz, I now have electronic boxes full of bidoofs.
There is one thing I miss from the CCG play (also played Magic too) thats not present in the Pokemon battles via DS, the face to face contact. I like talking about everything in the decks/teams and really picking apart teams or finding out why someone used a certain strategies. I know you can a little bit of this here but its just not the same as the good ol' days at the comic shops.

We could do that during battles, but I hate using the voice chat. I also heard where people can use the voice chat to mess with their opponent. So not to sure if would benefit the battle he-he.
I have tons of the older Pokemon CCG and my wife has said to get rid of them, I don't play anymore and don't have anyone else to play, but someday my son will be able to play he-he.

Hm, last time I counted I had like 1000 CCG pkmn cards, it was really fun to play.
Also, voice chat is a really cool feature as long as there isn't any trash talking going on. It is neat to battle people and talk to them at the same time, but a lot of people are to shy to do so.

Yeah, I am a bit shy about that. The other problem is you spend about a 1/4 of the time trying to decipher what the person is saying ether from poor sound quality or the mic isn't picking up everything as well as it should or every other word is "what?".

True, but voice battles are a lot of fun.

I haven't done much voice battling, but I have found that having both sides use the mike & earpiece accessory for the DS is pretty much mandatory. It makes it sound like a phone call instead of the drivethrough at Hardees.
It might be fun to use the voice chat function in some of the more "informational" battle leagues.

I always find it so weird how some Pokemon can talk and others can't. Something else I find odd is nobody in the show nicknames their Pokemon.
Also you would think at some point GameFreaks would have made each have something different from the other. Like one Pikachu would have a black stripe and another would have an orange stripe. I thought they would start doing that after Spinda, but Spinda is the only Pokemon that has different looks to it.
I wish the berries you fed it and the way you raised it would create it's image. Like a Pokemon you let battle alot and it took alot of damage while battling would have a broken ear, or a scar, or just a messed up patch of hair.

That's not entirely true. There are several trainers who nickname their pokemon. For example, Viktor from the first season of pokemon names his surfing pikachu "Puka." Puka even had blue eyes.
And the anime has a few shiny pokemon, remember Ash's Noctowl?

The trainers from the first movie had nicknames, and, if I remember correctly, the one guy from indigo league had names on his, too. I remember several episodes where Pokemon looked different, the one that comes most to mind was the Magnemite wrangler guy, (whose Pokemon were nicknamed, now that I think of it) who had a weird shaped Magnemite.
And I think the anime described that certain Pokemon were smart enough to learn to speak human speech, but most could only understand it though body language, tone, and certain keywords.

I don't watch the show that often. I knew there were shiny Pokemon here and there, but never knew any other different Pokemon. I don't remember seeing nicknamed ones either on the shows I have seen.

i mean really does he need CONES for legs? But his voice i liked.
SpaceMonkeySteve

The legs were clearly not very well thought out, and forced.
And the only voice I would have found acceptable is one befitting of a Pokemon of Darkrai's immense evilness: Richard Simmons.

Just thinking about his voice and I was wondering...
was he using mental telepathy like MewTwo does, or was he actually talking like Meowth?

I don't think he has a mouth. Maybe his evilness just talks for him.

I think it was like Meowth. His cloak covered his mouth, but you could see it move on the close ups.
His legs were shadows used only during breaks, you try hovering all the time.
