View Full Version : How to Make Your Pokemon Happy

There is a hidden stat for happiness.
The stat needs to be maxed out for pokemon to evolve. 255 is max.

Your Poketch will tell you what range your pokemon is in.
No hearts, happiness = 0-99
One heart, happiness = 100-199
Two hearts, happiness = 200-255

Also: If a pokemon is critically wounded [beeping sound] or has a bad status [sleep, poison,...], it will not receive its happiness points.

Holding Soothe Bell increases points 50% of what is listed below.

Walk 256 steps with the Pokemon in your active Party.
(+1 point)

Feeding pokemon negative EV berry.
[berries 21-26, pomeg - tamato]
(+10 points)

Grooming your pokemon by massage.
(+3 points if its happiness stat is 0-199,
+1 point if its happiness stat is 200-254)

Give the Pokemon Vitamins.
[HP Up, Carbos, Iron, Protein, Calcium, Zinc, PP Up]
(+5 points if its happiness stat is 0-99,
+3 points if its happiness stat is 100-199,
+2 points if its happiness stat is 200-254)

Usage in Important Battle.
[Gym Leaders, Elites, Champion]
(+3 points if its happiness stat is 0-99,
+2 points if its happiness stat is 100-199,
+1 point if its happiness stat is 200-254)

Level Up the Pokemon.
(+5 points if its happiness stat is 0-99,
+3 points if its happiness stat is 100-199,
+2 points if its happiness stat is 200-254)

The Haircut Brothers in Goldenrod City can raise your Pokemon's happiness between 1 and 10 points depending on your Pokemon's reaction after the haircut
-------------------------------------------

If for some reason you are an evil trainer and want unhappy pokemon.

The attack Frustration benefits from an unhappy pokemon.
Where as Return benefits from a happy pokemon with a high happiness stat.

You can decrease the happiness stat using the following items.

Letting your pokemon faint in battle will lower it happiness one point

Energypowder
(-5 point if its happiness stat is 0-199,
-10 point if its happiness stat is 200-249)

Heal Powder
(-5 point if its happiness stat is 0-199,
-10 point if its happiness stat is 200-249)

Energy Root
(-10 point if its happiness stat is 0-199,
-15 point if its happiness stat is 200-249)

Revival Herb
(-15 point if its happiness stat is 0-199,
-20 point if its happiness stat is 200-249)

Edit 1:

Some people debate that letting a pokemon faint only gives -1 point to the happiness stat. My experimentation has shown its a happiness reset, but I'm only human...I could be wrong. My advice is to not take the chance if you are trying to evolve a pokemon.

Edit 2:

Pokemon have a base happiness stat as well.
It is the happiness value it will have when its hatched, caught or traded.
The list below is what I have found from different sites.

Base = 0
Arceus, Buneary, Darkrai, Deoxys, Dialga, Giratina, Groudon, Ho-oh, Kyogre, Lugia, Mewtwo, Palkia, Rayquaza, Regigigas, Reshiram, Zekrom, Kyurem, Genesect

Base = 35
Absol, Aggron, Aron, Articuno, Bagon, Banette, Beldum, Cacnea, Cacturne, Carvanha, Chatot, Dragonair, Dragonite, Dratini, Dusclops, Dusknoir, Duskull, Entei, Gallade, Gardevoir, Glaceon, Honchkrow, Houndoom, Houndour, Kirlia, Lairon, Larvitar, Leafeon, Metagross, Metang, Misdreavus, Mismagius, Moltres, Murkrow, Pupitar, Raikou, Ralts, Regice, Regirock, Registeel, Sableye, Salamence, Sharpedo, Shelgon, Shuppet, Sneasel, Suicune, Tyranitar, Umbreon, Weavile, Zapdos, Axew, Fraxure, Haxorus, Pawnaird, Bisharp, Vullaby, Mandibuzz, Deino, Zweilous, Hydreigon, Cobalion, Terrakion, Virizion, Keldeo

Base = 70
All other Pokemon not in any other group.

Base = 90
Latios, Latias, Tornadus, Thundurus, Landorus

Base = 100

Letting a pokemon die doesn't reset happiness. Some of mine died countless times and it barely affected the time it took them to evolve (i.e. it just makes them lose some points but not all).

Also, afaik, two hearts is enough for evolution. I don't if it's because evolution is possible starting from 200 or because 2 hearts means a happiness stat of 255.

Return benefits from happiness. The attack that benefits from frustration is, well... frustration :p

Fainting didn't seem to affect my pichu very much, I was using it as chain-bait so I was forcing it to faint. However, it still evolved at level 2/3. Must have been because the steps counteracted the fainting. But I didn't do anything! I just sent it against opponents that outranked it and now I have a level 4 pikachu :P

I still use it as chain bait though, I'm not sure how much it helps but I have gotten 2 electric shiny species, so it can't be too bad.

A quick question: if a pokemon explodes (uses self destruct or explosion) or sacrifices (uses momento or healing wish) itself, does it lose the standard -1 happiness?

This could of helped me a lot earlier, I let my shiny Golbat faint 20 times. lol

Also: If a pokemon is critically wounded [beeping sound] or has a bad status [sleep, poison,...], it will not receive its happiness points.

^I should point out that's a myth. Letting your pokemon walk around with a status condition or letting it receive critical health will not influence happiness in any way.

Why is it then that my Giratina loved me from what seemed to be the moment I caught it? In fact, now that I think about it, all my legendaries loved me from the very moment I caught them...

What if your pokemon is at 254 happiness and gains 10 through a berry? Does it max, or does it need exactly 255? Cuz I'm having trouble with my Chingling (trying to get chimeco).

Viscosity
03-30-2008, 12:17 AM
Chingling requires happiness of >220 + level-up nighttime. Happiness for any pokemon cannot exceed 255.

me27
03-30-2008, 12:52 AM
I know, but I mean if you have 254 and it gains 10, will it have 255 or not go up at all since 254+10>255?? By the way, I got my chimeco. Thanks :)

Viscosity
03-30-2008, 02:12 AM
Since happiness cannot exceed 255, 254 + 10 will automatically equal 255. No higher. :)

Buying/ Giving ribbons increases your pokemons happiness. I don't know by how much, but you can buy ribbons at the resort area, and you can get the foot print ribbon, as well as the day related ribbons in sunyshore. My brother recently used this as a way to get that last bit of happiness.

I've evolved MANY an espeon/umbreon, and i've found 2 very simple and pretty quick ways to do it.

First, make sure you give it a shell bell, then you can do 1 of two things.

Walk around a lot (I breed so this is pretty standard anyway)

Feed it vitamins (If you feed it 30 vitamins while holding the shell bell, it will evolve within a level or two)

yes, your poketch can tell. the one that have all pokemons move all over the place. if you put your stickpen on one of them, you'll see some hearts. when they get 2 large hearts, they are very happy. :)

I found a pretty solid way to raise happiness.
-IF- you haven't got say, a Chansey for example, catch it with a Luxury Ball.
Give the little blighter a Soothe Bell, and that should give you a a +4 counter overall with the Happiness points.
Put the 'mon you need to make happy, in the first position of your squad.
I then used a mixtures of daily massages, then a system of levelling the 'mon up by 5-10 levels, and then taking a treck on the bike along Route 210 and 209, through Solaceon Town. You should line yourself up so you go up and down two mud slopes. If done right, you should clock up 123 steps on the bike, for one way (246 for going up, then down.) Choose however many steps you wish to set yourself, (I usually go for 20 or 30,000) and that 256 steps will give you 1+ Happiness point.
It should start loving you in no time!
I did have a set table with bits of data on base happiness of when a 'mon is caught, and what actions cause it to go up. I'll look for it later.
I've got a Lot of Pokemon that need to evolve via Happiness this way. :)

The way I get pokemon to like me is by ev training them, that usually does the trick. :D I think it's the vitamins it likes or something.

If you head back to the first page, t-f-angel, I believe FatherGoblin has a rather extensive list on the statistics of Happiness. So that should get you part way. The rest is just your technique on How you raise their happiness. Which can be entirely up to you. I have also found the old reference sheet that I used myself. It's got a few more details than FatherGoblin's (no offence meant at all >.<) PM me if you'd like it.

Just as a note, if you want to raise your pokemon's happiness to maximum without fear of fainting or leveling at all (If you don't want EV's on your pokemon or if you want a lvl 3 Blissey, or lvl 2 Eeveelution or Togekiss, etc) you can:

If you have the money to spare: Give it vitamins
If you don't: Give it massages or walk a lot with it (256 steps = +1 with soothe bell)

If you want to walk with it, then I suggest going to cycling road (beat all the trainers so your pokemon doesn't level or faint accidentally), and keep either the step counter app or the happiness checker out. You can make your pokemon happy without too much effort or time. Just press up every once in a while. As you go along you can calculate the happiness by the step counter, or you poke the happiness checker until the HUGE hearts appear.

Hope this helps someone. :D

Vitamins will in fact give it 10 EVs per specified stat, however. They come in handy while EV training.

Could you still max it's happiness the old Pokémon Yellow way? Which is to just keep using potion on Pikachu even when it has no effect, usually showed Pikachu extremely happy when you clicked it.

The basic rules of Happiness still apply in the fifth generation. Most of the pokemon that aren't legendary are at base 70, all others are updated in the first post of this thread.

There are two new pokemon that evolve when they level up with a happiness of 220 or more:
Woobat will evolve to Swoobat
Swadloon will evolve to Leavanny

There are two happiness checkers in Black and White. One in Nacrene City in the building to the right of the Pokémon Center and one in the pokemon fan club in Icirrus City.
Happiness level are from 0-255
0-49 Hmmm... It may not like you very much.
By any chance, you... Are you a very strict person? I feel that it really doesn't like you...
50-89 The relationship is neither good nor bad... It looks neutral.
100-149 It is a little friendly to you... That's what I'm getting.
150-199 It is friendly to you. It must be happy with you.
200-249 It is quite friendly to you! You must be a kind person!
250+ It is super friendly to you! I'm a bit jealous!

There in a girl that will massage your pokemon in the building off the eastern road of Castelia City.
The Soothe Bell is found in Nimbasa City

The various wings found on the two bridges not only raise your pokemon's by 1 EV, but they also raise its happiness
+5 points if its happiness stat is 0-99,
+3 points if its happiness stat is 100-199,
+2 points if its happiness stat is 200-254
