View Full Version : Am I insane?

Well, I'm just about finished Pal Parking over all of my guys from my GBA games (after a very long hiatus) and I'm considering replaying through my FireRed for more items and goodies, and for the fun of it. Then I got to thinking...
What if I soft reset a bunch to get a shiny starter? Then I thought:
Why not trade it to my other game, then get ALL of the starters? Then;
I have Ruby too, what if I did BOTH GAMES, all starters? And finally:
I'll need to get a couple shiny starters for my girlfriend too...
So, how insane am I?

Not very, I restart my old games when I need some items for people and to get shiny starters, I say go for it! It would probably be easier than breeding each of the starters and trying to get a shiny that way.

May I ask how do you soft reset because I might want to try that.

Yeah, it will take FOREVER. If I go for a full set for both me and my girlfriend, that's TWELVE right there. It's like rolling a giant 8192 sided die until I get a 1 12 times. I'm sure I'll tear out a good portion of my hair for even one.
I hope I get lucky and things go semi-quick.
EDIT: Soft reseting is when you reset a system without hitting any buttons or switches on the system. In the case of the Game Boy, it's A+B+Start+Select. The idea is to save right before you pick your starter, then reset over and over until it's shiny. The same method works for legendaries, and even pokemon given in in-game events, like Eevee, too. My previous attempts at soft reseting a Groudon and Palkia failed because I wanted to get on with the game, but since I'm done with the older games, it shouldn't be a problem. Just expect several hours, if not days, of work for a single shiny.

Yep, but I'm zany enough to try it.
I think I'll be posting progress reports as I go along. Expect these reports to offer a glimpse into a mind that is slowly slipping into total madness.

I have sat and restarted for Female Starters with Natures I wanted, that takes just about as long as a Shiny I would bet he-he.
Nothing is insane for Pokemon. I mean they made Pahirisu when they already had Minun and Plusle.

True that.
What I really should do is soft reset to get a set of male and female starters, enough for each evolution, and only in the best natures. Then a second set for my girlfriend.
That'd that me like, years, I would guess to get all 72 pokemon, and that's assuming I get perfect on the genders and natures on my first try.
Yeah, I won't go THAT far. The odds are something in the ball park of... 1/589824. That's ALSO assuming I don't try for good IVs as well, and it's not taking natures into account...
I'm sure the chances are somewhere in the millions, if not tens of millions.

Getting them and breeding is so much easier he-he. Resetting for shinies is the only reason anymore to do it. I don't know why I ever did it for females and natures when I could have bred for them he-he. I think it was for the longest time I thought, I need females to breed for more.

You are insane, but you are not the only one.
I've been soft-resetting my sapphire game, but it certainly is slow going - I'm thinking of doing the either/or clause - female/nature or shiny starter... but I hear you with the 'gave up coz I wanted to get on with things' bit!
Good luck with the SRing is all I can say.

Day One of my adventures:
Today I started my quest. I decided I would start with the most desired shiny starter for myself. So, my quest for Bulbasaur began. I have spent many hours on this thus far. Already, the sayings of my rival echo in my head, "I'll take this one, then." The cursed question that burns my very essence every time my gaze falls upon it, "Would you like to give a nickname to BULBASAUR?" Having to skip through the game recap over and over is like small twinge on my heartstrings, slowly eking away my patience, my mind, already numbing from the sheer repetitiveness. Still, I know my cause to be a true one, and these tests of mettle shall not deter me from my goal. I must press onwards.

Quick question: Let's say your lucky enough to get the shiny little thing, would you see the siny version of it's picture when you're picking it out of the table? You know what I mean? Or do I have to check after Gary picks his choice and check my party to make sure he is not shiny?

I'm not sure. I've been checking the party, since I know 100% that that will be accurate.
Once I get one, I'll let you know.

I sat there watching tv for a couple of hours while soft resetting my ds, even though I'm trying to get a shiny charmander from FR, I find it easier to soft reset the ds than my sp. Anyhow, no luck yet.
