PokeFarm April Breeder's Cup Tournament

The March tournament was a roaring success! We had a total of eight members competing in the tournament and, once again, Jhamin pulled out the win.

For April's tournament we will be doing a few things differently.

Rules:

1. All battles will be Open Level Double Battles - Up to now we have been doing single battles with level 1 Pokemon. For April we will be testing your ability to perform in a Double Battle situation.

2. Two Pokemon - That's right, there will be no switching of Pokemon in this tournament. Two Pokemon enter as a team and that is it!

3. Your Pokemon must be related - This is a new rule, one that we have not used before. The essence of this rule is that both of your Pokemon must share an egg group. For purposes of this tournament "none" counts as an egg group.

4. Level 1 - You knew this one was coming. Both of your Pokemon must be level 1.

5. April Pokemon only - All of your Pokemon must be hatched by you during the month of April 2008.

6. Pokemon may hold berries - Berries are the only hold items allowed in this event.

7. The Base Stat Points of your team can not exceed 620 points in total. - Not sure what Base Stats are? Try this link (http://www.psypokes.com/dp/basestats.php?stat=overall) for all Pokemon listed in Base Stat order.

8. Standard PokeFarm Gym rules are in effect - If it is not part of the core PokeFarm Gym rules it is fair game (i.e. there is no Sleep Clause in effect for this one.)

9. No Baby Pokemon - Babies are not for battling, they are for cuddling with!

10. No Wobbuffet - Even though you could squeeze him in he is not legal for this tournament.

11. Item Evolutions are legal - If you can evolve a Pokemon at level 1 via an Item or other method it is legal. Keep the Base Stat Points rule in mind and the level 1 rule.

Week ending April 8, 2008 - All pre-tournament discussion takes place in this very thread.
Week ending April 15, 2008 - All tournament registrations take place this week.
Week ending April 22, 2008 - Register your teams.

Battling will commence shortly after team registration is complete.

Yes we will. Only difference is that you can only gain or lose two points per battle, not three.

Also, if we have a large disparity between battle totals (one member has 10 battles while another only has three) we will invalidate any battles against members who failed to show up for more than a handful of battles.

This is to prevent someone who loses three matches and then stops playing anymore from hurting those who are a few points behind and have no way of catching up to the leader. This has not been an issue yet.

Ok this may sound like silly question but i have to ask for my peace of mind. Now if one of the pokes i want on my team has a double egg group i can have a member from either one on my team as long as they = 600 stat points right. ie. bulbasaur has 2 so i can pick from either the monster group or the plant group right? Just making sure. Thanks

Also is it just me or does it seem like u can almost eliminate any poke with the stat score of 420+ from being on your team? cause if u have anything more than that its impossible to match up unless u don't mind using sunkern and weedle etc.

If the point total is too severe we may alter it. I don't want to find everyone using the exact same team!

Believe it or not, I'm actually thinking about doing this, since it's only two Pokemon. A question I'm worried about, though: Is there going to be a certain time that we have to be available to battle? I know I'll be in New York on a field trip from the 24th to the 28th, and I won't have Wi-Fi or computer access. If I can still battle before/after that, I should be OK, but if it must be during those four days, I'm out. Thank you!

I think you need to make the limit 620.

At least then you can use starter pokemon and another 300 point pokemon.

Less than that and the egg group rule gets really tough.

Wow I built like 6 different teams at 600. Steve originally told me it was a max of 325 Base Stat on a Pokemon with a combine total of 600. I get an extra 20 points to play with now, he-he-he-he. Loving it. I thought the 600 was a real challenge though.

Yeah I went just by Types, like Water or Fire and then built by that and looked at egg groups last.

The Bug group itself had like 6+ combos. I did not breed any yet, but I had them on paper.

There is no such thing as a no egg group. The only Pokémon that cannot produce an Egg are Legendaries, Babies, Nidorina, and Nidoqueen. Yes that means no egg, but by your example they should be able to breed with a Ditto. Even Genderless belong to egg groups. Like a Magnemite is in the Mineral Egg group, but it can only breed with the Ditto Egg Group.

Also I know Manaphy and Phione are Legendary and make eggs, but they are not used in Gyms or this tournament.

It looks like there are 11 people still in the tournament group that Viscosity posted a link to, but I only see 6 people that have setup battle records. I know the tourney doesn't officially open till this weekend but do we have any idea how many people emailed their teams to Steve by the deadline?

Between that and "only" beating Bumbee 1-0 I think I am actually in third place right now with only two more matches to go. If I want to come back I pretty much need to sweep the rest of my matches and hope that both Bobreeder *and* Sorgatani either lose a match or get 1-0s for the rest of the tourney.

This looks rather interesting now. Everyone has done 4/5 of their battles except snapperjack and there is no clear leader at this point. Luck is really taking a hit on my team :(. when half of my attacks miss it becomes hard to get anything done.

I sure learned my lesson about 80% accuracy moves. As I look back on the battles I've had I notice that the ones where my one key move hits are the ones I won, and the ones where it missed are the ones I lost.

I know better than to build a team on a move with only a 80% hit rate but I got carried away with the potential up side. :oops:
(that and I failed to grasp that an 80% hit rate against one opponent is actually only a 64% chance that it will hit *both* opponents. Kind of a key statistic when you are doubles battling! And once again, I know better than that, I just got greedy! :oops:)


IMHO this tourney has been way more fun for me than the last two. I love a close race!
I feel like everyone deserves a sportsmanship award even if they don't get the trophy!

I was making a refrence to the early 90s era Ninja Turtles movie. One of the (New York born and raised) Ninja Turtles is fighting with a sports themed vigilante. He has already taken away the vigilante's baseball bat and hockey stick when the vigilante pulls out a cricket bat. The Ninja Turtle calls shennanigans as they are both New Yorkers and "you can't play cricket unless you know what a crumpet is". Cause, you know, we don't see a lot of Cricket here in the states.....

I don't know that I'd go that far. MY team ended up being mostly luck. I didn't intend it to be, but I failed to appreciate the numbers I was running. I strayed from my normal doubles strategy and paid for it.

I think the people who finished ahead of me had lower powered but more reliable strategies. And it paid for them. :)

It seems my worries were true, I have to log now, even I need sleep, and no sign of Kiwi. This means I will not be able to battle him. If anyone gets to battle him, beats him, and pass me on the Battle Record, congratulations :)

This is the tournament I would have loved to be in. I had to send my DS in last Monday, so I could not have battled. I was in and out of the hospital with my daughter and wife the first part of the month, so I could not have worked on a team that would have been worthy of a tournament.

Maybe next month. If the tournament type gets announced soon he-he.

Don't think Kiwi's battles actually count until he's battled everyone. So I still think I'm in second place.

Because Kiwi's battle happened after the close of the tournament AND he only battled one member his battles will not count for scoring purposes.

This means our winner is bobreader!
This means our loser is Pigen1!

Why Pigen1 and not SnapperJack? Even though they were tied when they battled Pigen1 lost, that breaks the tie.

A move that only Darkrai and Smeargle can learn that puts all Pokemon to sleep that is not the user of the move.

All opponents I meant. I forgot this was a double tournament.

This move would not be usable in this tournament though right? Well I guess Smeargle would be legal for this tournament, but Darkrai's Dark Void would not be. Smeargle would have to learn it in a Double battle and stay at level 1, which the only way to have Darkrai in your party is to have a Movie Event Darkrai or a hacked Darkrai.

I got a movie event one borrowed from somebody at school for a STEEP price, an EV trained Garchomp <.< and he wanted it back within a week... I lost on purpose in the double battles, so the Smeargle didn't get experience :)

Not exactly friend, more somebody who loves getting me to give him my hard work in the easiest way possible, as I can breed and EV train and he can't, so...yeah...I don't think he would ever trade it, but I could probably ask him nicely, even though THAT is hard :)

I just have to ask, how did he get it in the first place? Not trying to say it is hacked. The 2 I have are glitched Movie Darkrai. With the Japanese glitch you can get multiple Movie Darkrai.

From what he says on school, he got it from a Japanese friend who went to the movie, and I know he has one (japanese friend) as he came to the school once, but I am not sure if he's telling the whole truth, it may have been glitched...

It is very well possible that the guy that got it for him got multiple copies.

I know one Darkrai I have was from a guy that used the Japanese glitch to get multiples and the other one was from my Uncle ironically. My Aunt and Uncle retired from teacher 2 years ago and they have been traveling. They were in China for awhile and went to Japan. My Uncle is not hardcore into Pokemon, but he was playing his one day at a hotel and some kids saw him. I believe he traded his MYSTRY MEW for the Darkrai. Since I had an extra MYSTRY MEW, I made a swap with him he-he.

It is hard to tell because both come in a Cherish Ball and have the same Japanese OT. If the Darkrai is not in a Cherish Ball then it is 100% hacked.

Date, but then you have to know the days the event took place he-he. Finding hacks I am not good at. I know bad shiny hacks and hatched shiny hacks, but events I am not sure of unless it is obvious.

Now that everything is over I don't think I'm giving anything away by saying that out of the 6 teams there were three Smergle with Dark Void.

I got *mine* by borrowing a Movie Darkrai from Babael, leveling it to 66 so it could learn Dark Void (all with her permission, of course) and then taking Darkrai and Smergle to the restraunt. I returned Babael's Darkrai after I was done.

How to teach the move without leveling Smergle?

Step 1> Start double battle with Smergle, Darkrai
Step 2> First round, Lvl 66 Darkrai outruns the field, uses Dark Void, both opponents fall asleep. Smergle Sketches Darkrai and learns Dark Void
Step 3> Darkrai attacks Smergle. Smergle faints.
Step 4> Darkrai finishes off the rest of the battle.

Smergle sketched before it went down and learned the move, but fainted before any opponent goes down and earned no XP.

Rinse/Repeat to teach all the other moves you may need.
