It's a little long, but if you guys like it, I'll post chapter 1
Prologue
The Pokemon League Elite’s Lounge, one of the few places of the Pokemon League HQ that not a lot of people get to see. A little piece of heaven where the cream of the crop of competitive training comes to unwind after battles. A fire place, some bookshelves, the walls filled with pictures of great moments, people and pokemon; are part of this room. The bar on the east corner, the big couch in the middle of the room, facing the huge plasma TV, that covers a little less than a quarter of the southern wall. All adorned in the dark hue of oak wood. Anybody stepping into the room cannot help to take a moment to look around, to graze at the pictures. But today is different.
Even though there are quite a few people in the room, the lively chat that usually fills the lounge is now silenced. Only the TV can be heard. And only Sarah is sitting on the couch, laptop on coffee table, hard at work. And even though the couch is large enough to comfortably sit four or five people, most of everybody is standing still around the TV.
”I told you he was good” -Bertha broke the silence; sitting at the bar facing Jacob, the bartender. “I do NOT loose to lucky trainers.” -She murmured while sipping her tea. The aroma filled the room with a fresh feel.
On TV is the live feed from the Coliseum, just across the street. Today, Flint; one of the best fire pokemon trainers in the world, a proud member of the Sinnoh Elite Four, and a great team mate; is facing a newcomer… and it is not going well.
“It’s super effective!!!!” -The MC yells at the top of his lungs, as a filled-to-capacity Coliseum breaks in cheers that can be heard from the open door giving way to the balcony. The Sidelines Judge raises his flag: ”Drifblim is unable to battle… “
“I never seen one so fast.” -Lucian is thinking at loud, walking back and forth at the end of the room. “It was able to seamlessly use Night Slash and X-Scissor at the exact same time, and then outran Drifblim’s Aftermath… simply amazing.”
Lucian is usually very calculating, and extremely calm under pressure. So this little burst of emotion worried Cynthia. She kept the thought to herself, and cleared her mind once again. “Back to the battle,” -She thought, “Learn from your opponent.”
But it was true, nothing about this contender was “normal”. All trainers who are able to challenge the Elite Four come with six pokemon, simply because every pokemon raises the chances for victory. But this challenger only registered two pokemon. Even though there is no rule against it, nobody expects to battle with less than six. What is more interesting is that so far he has only used this one pokemon, he never had to change it. What is in that other poke ball? Rephrase that, Ultra Ball. She fixes her sight on the challenger’s belt. Pokemon League rules prevented defenders from knowing the pokemon registered by trainers challenging the Elite Four. Usually it does not matter, since most pokemon are revealed during the first few battles.
Right off the bat, at the beginning of his challenge against Aaron, they knew that particular pokemon was special. She has seen shiny pokemon before, she has also seen some rare colors that only nature would choose. The White Gengar comes to mind, she still bites her tongue every time the thought of letting that albino Gengar escape appears. “Back to the battle.” But this one is extremely peculiar, completely black, with red eyes. And bigger too, most pokemon of its species are about five feet tall, this one is about seven. How much does it weight? She calculates about 350 pounds, one hundred more than usual. And it flies too, she knows from watching the Pokemon Channel they can use air currents to glide around, but this one is clearly flying, propelling itself with its wings.
So fast… the camera is having a hard time tracking it, just a shadow over shadows. But its trainer does not have the same issue, it’s like his eyes are guiding it. “A clue” -She thought.
“Oooooh!!!” -The crowd cheers. “After just one attack, Flint’s Rapidash faints.” -The MC announces. Rapidash landed a solid Fire Blitz, but it did not even make a scratch. Instead, this pokemon used Fire Blitz’s momentum to counter with X-Scissor. Everybody saw the desperation on Flint’s face. As the Elite, they have an excellent understanding of loosing. To loose is to learn, and when beaten by a better opponent, this opponent, per their standards, will have a much tougher challange winning next time. They are used to giving their all in each battle. But they are not used to getting completely dominated in the battlefield. Hence the desperation.
“Pokemon do not have levels, the level system is a guideline that we use in order to grade them, if you will, against each other.” -Cynthia was thinking out loud. “If his pokemon is faster than Flint’s Rapidash, and can take a direct attack super effective against its type, and counter using a not so effective move against Flint’s pokemon, and KO it in just one move, then it’s safe to assume its level is higher than Rapidash, do we agree? -She did not let anybody respond. “So, if by knowing that Flint’s pokemon have an average level of 60, I would have to say his pokemon is graded around level 100.”
Everybody stared at the Champion for a moment, then Aaron continued: “I see, but a pokemon that high in level would be impossible to train, I mean, otherwise ANYBODY would be a Champion, no offense. How and where would you get a pokemon that high in level?” Aaron gulped his cocktail. “A Shadow Pokemon perhaps?”
“Impossible.” -Lucien said. “The previous Champion made sure that would never happen again. Plus this pokemon does not use Shadow moves, and appears very fond of its trainer.”
Pokemon in Sinnoh, like pretty much anywhere else, are ranked or graded in levels, as a way to inform people and trainers of what to expect when they go out into the wild. The same carries over to competitive training, by grading pokemon, judges can make sure battles will be equal, and no trainer or pokemon will be hurt. Levels can be gradually updated pending wins, and training. Levels range from 1 to 100, assuming 100 will be the strongest. There are no documented cases of a pokemon reaching level 100. The highest level pokemon found in nature was a Red Gyarados, but even that was a fluke. The highest level pokemon ever recorded: Level 71, a Tyranitar, belonging to the previous Champion.
There are ancient descriptions of Legendary Pokemon being extremely strong, but that again, is just legend. Of course, there are people who claim they have seen the casual Mew, but not concrete evidence or proof...
Cynthia recollected all this information in her mind, from hours of watching the Pokemon Channel. Her thoughts were abruptly stopped by Sarah, her personal assistant: “All right, let me tell you the little yet intriguing info I got on our Mystery Trainer.” Sarah is the best help a Pokemon Champion could get, yet doesn’t know her Jigglypuffs from her Geodudes.
“So it appears that Jake used to be a Team Magma Lieutenant, but his police records were sealed when he joined the Pokemon Rangers, whooouo… I couldn’t find any info on any of his missions, but then again, Rangers are like spies, they get no records. Three years after that he got out of the Rangers, honorable discharge. He then became what we see today, a trainer.”
Cynthia tasked Sarah to find information on Jake before his battle began, she was done before it was over. “Honorable discharge? That can only mean one thing. I’ll place a call to Pokemon Ranger HQ.”
Every Champion is an honorary Pokemon Ranger, they are the only ones that can have more than one pokemon. Just for the fact, that the best trainer in the land has to be somebody that upholds the law and helps protect pokemon. “Breaking rules gets you discharged from the Rangers.” -She was thinking to herself. “That might explain why he would like to become the Champion, but does not explain the strength of his pokemon”
“Infernape is unable to battle.” -The TV roared “Jake is the winner.” -The face of the Sideline Judge came on screen. “What a show have we seen today, Jake will continue his challenge when he will meet Lucien, the Master Psychic!!!”
A long pause fell in the room for what it seemed as ages. Then the cheers coming from the street started to die out.
As the TV went into commercial, Lucien’s and Cynthia’s eyes met, they both knew the defense of her title would fall over her shoulders, and then they all knew, but nobody would say it. What an awkward moment.
She only had to defend it three times since the day she became a Champion, it seemed forever since her last official match. And even then, she was extremely confident of her abilities. Or at least she used to be.
Lucien gulped the little wine he had left and stormed out of the lounge, he will give this ex-criminal turned ex-ranger a run for his money.
That’s the first time Cynthia had taken her eyes off the TV, her arms were still crossed and she was still facing the couch, she noticed she had not moved an inch since the match started.
“Ground moves will not hit Jake’s main pokemon. Flame Thrower or maybe Fire Blast, I need to teach my Garchomp an effective move against it. I need to train him to be faster, my Lucario might be able to track its movements.” As Cynthia picked up her poke balls off the counter, she was as determined as ever to keep her title. And as she walked outside, with an air of royalty ready to die for her kingdom she thought to herself: “The challenge with Lucien is in one week, that gives me two weeks to get my team ready…
…It’s not enough time…”
