My guess is that he's dead.
Now, why would you say that? It could be like in the game, or at least in Saphire and Ruby where his dad is like a gym leader somewhere, you don't know, but honestly, I have no idea.

yeah, there could be lots of possibilities.
he's dead.
he's a wandering trainer. (if he's wandering, wouldn't the odds be greater for him to meet ash?)
a few say that its Ho-Oh, but thats just....wrong.
Giovanni could be the father ala star wars
i wonder why the anime doesn't touch on this subject. Naruto fans got their answer about the father. why can't Ash!?

Ash has also been a 10 year old for the last decade. At least Naruto grew up. :-P

It makes it really difficult to gauge how long he's been on his journey too. Considering they've never celebrated his birthday, it's quite possible he's been doing all of this adventuring within a year.

Actually, did you realize that Ash's voice went down a couple of octaves. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hHm0ZMxJ5lE&feature=related Don't watch the whole thing, just the first part when Ash talks. :D

My Matte says that Ash's dad is Prof. Oak. I say Giovanni. Some people say it is some guy named Silver or something...

Think about it. Ash's mom and Prof. Oak spend a lot of time together. Maybe they haven't told Ash because of their scandelous age difference. In fact, if you look at how old Delilah is, she would have been very young when Ash was born. Maybe even a teenager.

The most important piece of childrens literature is to seperate the main character from their parents. Its hard to be fantastic when you have two parents reminding you to do your homework and household chores and brush your teeth and go to bed on time and...
Harry Potter - best example!
Wizard of Oz - imagine Dorothy's parents in the house with her..."Now Dorothy, get back in the house this instant...we have no idea where this house landed!"
Chronicles of Narnia - If the parents went with, do you think the kids would be talking to stange talking animals or witches?
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - he doesnt take his mother with him.

I read someone's essay once where they argued that Ash doesn't grow up because he's living in a dream world. He went into a coma long before the start of the series and each character is a symbolic of some part of him.

That would explain why the Officer Jenny and Nurse Joys are all the same in each town. Maybe the pokemon were all imagined by him too... I like that theory.

Apparently Brock was Ash's repressed masculinity too, since he lost the capacity to age and mature. ;)
