Not likely that I will get any badges especially shiny ones but I have a question.
I have played my Pearl and have pokemon listed with the ot Harley and Cherkat. Now my DS is registered as Cherkat, the name that you see when you turn it on but my trainer name is Harley. If I were to battle for a shiny badge could I use pokemon from both Cherkat and Harley on my team?

That's a good question Cherkat :)
I too have two names, because I have Diamond and Pearl :)
FYI.....I don't see it happening to me either ;)

It's my understanding that the challenger's team must have pkmn bred from the same cartridge & file that they are used to battle with.
This was a discussion that had involved breeding between Emerald & D/P. It's simply too difficult for Gym Leaders to verify for sure that you really bred them. It's important to remain consistent with all challengers.
Awwwww, I was thinking about using my emerald/leafgreen team for shiny badges. Maybe if we told the gym leaders our OT and Trainer name for them or put it somewhere in our sig?

I thought that I read somewhere that you can have several bred from your games if you give them a heads up first. I'll try to find where I read that...

Part of the problem is, say we let someone we know well like Cherkat get a shiny badge b/c we're familiar with her and trust her? It's not fair to another user who may not know as well at a personal level and therefore don't trust them as much.

That is the bottom line right there. If we trusted everyone with blind faith, some could take advantage. So if we started treating everyone like cheaters, it is not fair.
So keeping the system as, each Pokemon has to be bred on the game chip it is being played on, is a balanced system. Is it fair for all, not always but no system is fair to everyone. I own all the 3rd Gen games, but I don't breed my teams on them.
Another factor with 3rd Gen games, using an AR in a 3rd Gen still comes to Pal Park saying from Kanto or Johto.
Not saying anyone is cheating, but can you say with 100% accuracy that nobody is?

But, over the 5/6 months I've been here, the main point of Pokefarm seems to be trusting and breeding. Yeah, we can't be 100% sure that nobody is hacking, but we still take the farm events, we still battle knowing that if we get eaten, it'll be fair and sqaure, not because the opponent hacked. Anyway, if a person hacks, why would they bother coming here?

I couldn't fine the post I was thinking of. I remember it because I was thinking about getting a new game for breeding because my current game is too full to do any breeding on. I never ended up getting a new game because platinum is coming out leter this year/early next year and I think I can wait.
Or maybe I'm just confused. My mind has been playing tricks with me today so it's a valid option. :)

We still get hackers in here every once in a while -- users that we would never have guessed. So to be fair for everyone, we ask that battlers choose one cartridge file to be their battle-breeding file.

Well, to put this another way, the shiny badge isn't the prize. The badge all by itself is recognition for defeating a gym. The shiny badge is a special bonus for going to the extra effort of doing everything on one cartridge.
If you can beat the gym leaders with *any* team that is legal under the gym rules you get a badge. I haven't seen one myself but I have heard stories of people winning their badge with teams they assembled from farm events. This is all well and good.
If you are palparking up a team from Emerald to challenge the gyms you are encouraged to do so! I think it would be awesome for someone to come to my gyms with a team full of Emerald Move Tutor moves and Gale of Darkness special moves. But those are Pokémon bred and trained in another game.
It isn't that we don't trust you, it is that the shiny badge rules are specifically written to say that that isn't how things are done.
If you want to get the special recognition of a shiny badge you need to go the extra mile and breed your whole team on one cartridge.

Well said. The shiny badge was to recognize someone with not only strong battling skills, but strong breeding skills as well, which is what this site is really about.

Cherkat - thank you for asking this question, I have been wondering the same thing. It was good to get confirmation to my suspicions. So storage on one; breeding on the other it is.

My two cents: It is a great question Cherkat as we all have box storage issues hoarding our little digital pets. And other than box space, there are more reasons why that hard line of justification is difficult. There are a couple of OU pokemon that can learn much better moves from the Move Tutor in Emerald than they can learn in Diamon/Pearl. And if your team is based on having old familar faces, this rule is rough.
So far I have only had a couple people challange me for shiny badges and it hasn't been an issue. Once there are more people fighting for shiny badges, we can definately re-evaluate the rules!
Aim for the stardard badges and once Pokemon Ranch comes out, box space shouldn't be an issue. :) I'd love to see all of you join the E4 ;)

Oh to dream for more people to battle. Other Chatz and What song are you listening to get more activity then the gyms anymore.
What if you trade pokemon from Emerald or some other cartridge via pal park or GTS or whatever and then breed them on your cartridge that you use for breeding and battling for badges?

Because old Move Tutor and 3rd Gen moves won't breed into the offspring.
Okay.
Well what if you re-breed a farm event pokemon so that it has your OT name and number? Then would you get a shiny badge, or would that not count because it's kinda like taking credit for someone else's work?

Well the problem is that the IV's would not be the same, and IV's are a main component of a strong pokemon (not the only component, but an important one nonetheless). Most farmers take much time to make sure they're giving away pokemon with good IV's as well.

Not to mention that depending on the moveset & gender that you receive at a farm event (most farmers will only give one per person), you might still have difficulty re-creating that pkmn.

If you had a Male from an event and re-breed it for better IVs and Nature, yes it would count towards a shiny badge. The rules state the Pokémon needs your OT# and ID, but does not say someone cannot breed the parent of your Pokémon.
Cool, thanks guys for all your help. :-D

Don't let that stop you!
Seriously, the Shiny badge is cool but even getting a regular badge is a big deal. And not many are even trying for that.
Look around: How many people who have been members for less that 3 months have *any* badges? 2 or 3?
Join the ranks of the successful gym challangers. You can always upgrade your standard badge to shiny later once you rebreed your team members in Diamond or Pearl.

Obtaining badges is not the sole purpose of this site though. Think of it as a side venture. I have been here since August of last year and I have the badges from the gyms I was the leader of. Badges are not really important to me. I have battled in the other gyms some, but was not worried about the badge or I would have brought bigger teams.
Battling the gym leaders should be about fun and experience with a chance to receive a prize if you win.

Of couse the point isn't to get badges. There are a lot of long time, very accomplished members of the site that haven't chosen to persue them at all.
What I am mostly saying is that if you have a good team and want to challange the gyms, do so! Don't wait till you qualify for a shiny badge. They are great, but they can come later. Show us your stuff with your Gen III team! Show off all those farm event pokemon! Get the regular badge and upgrade later!

Not to be rude to either of you, but I lost to you and I managed a win against slizer. You both are great battlers, but the one difference is, slizer is a bit reluctant to switch out of bad situations. Something that took me many many months to learn myself. I always thought my Pokémon were strong enough to over come anything. Sometimes you need to know when to back down and get someone else out on the field.
