View Full Version : My Pokémon Ranch

My Pokémon Ranch, a down-loadable WiiWare game was released for the Wii in the U.S. today after much anticipation!
At a cost of $10, its not much of a hit on your budget, but that would lead me to believe there isn't much to the "game".
My Pokémon Ranch is basically an additional, albeit large, PC box for storing Pokémon from your Diamond/Pearl game. You can store Pokémon from several Diamond/Pearl games, but you cannot trade between games on the ranch. If you delete your data on your Diamond/Pearl game, you will never be able to withdrawal the Pokémon off of the ranch, and as you play the game, you will see this warning, ...repeatedly! Its not meant to be a cloning or trading device!
In addition to storing your Pokémon, you get to see your Pokémon in a very cutesy 3D forms...overly...cutesy! You can interact with the Pokémon through your Mii character, but the level of interactivity seems to depend on your ranch's level...more on that later. You can also take pictures of the Pokémon on your ranch. These pictures can be stored on a SD card for easy transfer to a computer, or the can be placed on your Wii message board and emailed to your friend's Wii.
*side note: Sadly, I just learned today how to set up friends on my Wii. If you are interested in joining my Wii message board, please PM me your Wii FC. In the Wii message board if you have your Wii connected to the Internet, choose "Create message" and you will see your friend code, from there you will get access to your address book where you can set up friends (Wii or email address). Once you and your friend have registered each other, you will be able to send messages. However, you cannot send pictures from your Wii to an email address.*
When you start My Pokémon Ranch, you meet the owner of the ranch, Hayley. She starts off the ranch by bringing some of her own Pokémon to the ranch. The number of Pokémon Hayley brings seems to vary from game to game. She brought six to my ranch. After that I could transfer 14 Pokémon from my game to the ranch. The maximum number of Pokémon on the ranch day 1 is 20. You can turn your Wii's system date ahead and advance the game to the next day. There does not seem to be any date checks like PalPark has.
You cannot withdrawal Hayley's Pokémon, but from time to time, she will offer to trade you one of her Pokémon for one of yours and then you can withdrawal that Pokémon. I have not tried out this option yet, but I believe the Pokémon you trade her is gone forever. Her Pokémon do come with items and usually one move that is harder to have that pokemon learn.
One game-like feature of My Pokémon Ranch: Hayley will ask you to bring specific Pokémon to the ranch. Her requests seem to come in groups of three. You have ten days to complete her request. Apparently, there will be some kind of reward for doing so. I completed 6 of her requests tonight having 4 of 6 in my PC and just needing to breed 2 baby evolutions of Pokémon that i have.
The maximum number of Pokémon the ranch can hold depends on the ranch level; maxing out at 1000 Pokémon. I am not convinced the charts I have seen on the Internet are completely accurate. Nintendo may have made different charts for the U.S. release. I deposited 14 Pokémon and it told me my level will be 7 tomorrow. Hopefully we will still be able to trade Hayley an egg for her Mew when we download 999 Pokémon!
When you are done playing for the day and go to sign off, Hayley will drop a hint as to which Pokémon she will be bringing to the ranch tomorrow. She asked me if something purple was alright for tomorrow. I agreed and she showed me a shadow picture of what appeared to be a Gligar.
At the end of day 1 this is the Pokemon I uploaded.

You can always try to entice her with some of the more casual and fun family games. :) Plus there is wii fit. I know a lot of women who have been thinking of getting a wii because of that.

If you can find WiiFit that is :).
They are apparently as hard to find as a Wii was 6 months ago (not to say that Wiis are easy to find now). I even read a report that said that Europe got three times as many copies of WiiFit as America did because the Euro has a better exchange rate vs. the Yen than the Dollar does. Nintendo makes more profit per unit in Europe.

That has long been assumed to be the reason behind Wii shortages in the USA.

It wouldn't surprise me. Just part of business I suppose...
I want to get wii fit. I hate going to the gym because people look at me and it makes me uncomfortable. Plus it will track progress, which is one thing I like about it...
I can offically say that since Ranch came out, there isn't anything in the wii store that I really want or look forward to. :D

I was so jealous of Jhamin's pictures I bought a SD card on my way home today.
Day 2
So now I am thinking Serebii's chart is correct on Ranch level and number of Pokemon. When I started game tonight Hayley informed me the Ranch is now level 5 and it can hold up to 50 Pokemon. She also informs me a toy will be delivered to the ranch each day and I need to find the toy; it comes in a wrapped present box. Free mode is also open which means I can use zoom in/out functionality. The last thing Hayley does is bring five Gligar to the ranch. Her total of Pokemon is 11 allowing me to only upload 39. Oh well, this will help out later on when I want to get to 1000.
I find the toy box pretty easily, grab it with A & B and shake...it opens.
Today's toy is a microphone. I really don't like the game music, so I play with volume off and I don't know if it has any effect, but the Pokemon like playing with it.
I then connect my DS and upload enough Pokemon to fill the ranch limit of 50.
Mostly I have been uploading legendaries. My ranch is called "Dad's Toy Ranch" I don't know how that name came to be, but I wish it was "Father's Legendary Ranch."
There is one of every legendary on the ranch now.
http://forum.pokefarm.com/picture.php?albumid=50&pictureid=376
I also have my shinies hanging out on the ranch.
He is shiny Absol and Chatot...thanks Taterbud!
http://forum.pokefarm.com/picture.php?albumid=50&pictureid=379
I go on to fulfill 6 more of Hayley's requests hoping for more tomorrow.
She keeps trying to trade me her Pikachu for Pokemon I'm not ready to let go of...even though I could get another one like it.
I do trade eventually for her Staravia, and as you would expect, you can withdrawal her Pokemon to your DS and whatever you trade her is gone forever.
At the end of the day, here are our 50 Pokemon on the ranch.
http://forum.pokefarm.com/picture.php?albumid=50&pictureid=377
I sign off for the day and Hayley asks to bring a blue Pokemon tomorrow. The shadow picture is a Shinx.

I love the pictures, Father's Fighting Pokemon aren't so scary when they are all in chibi form. Once your farm reaches 500 Hayley's pokemon no longer count in the total. Today she traded me a Pikachu with the move Grass Knot for one of the pokemon she asked me to bring to my ranch.

Oh mannnn! I really wanted a Wii JUST for the Pokémon games. I'm going to see about getting a used Wii or something just for the Poke games.
I'll leave my Xbox 360 to my NHL 08 and 2K8 games and what not.

Agreed! The storage is just an added bonus. :)
My igglybuff looked so cute. He kept bouncing high into the air. It was the most adorable little thing. :D And my mewtwo kept going around and beating down on other pokemon. I laughed until my Darkrai put him in his place... lol

The 1000 pokemon storage space alone is worth the $10 in my opinion.
The pokemon are way too cutesy in the game.
And their sizes are not very proportional.
They all seems to have been mathmatically normalized.
According to the level chart, my ranch will move to 8 today.
I am so excited to go home and deposit more pokemon onto the ranch.
My new max will be 100, so I'll be able to drop off somewhere just under 50 pokemon tonight.
With the extra box space I made yesterday, I was able to Pal Park 12 pokemon last night. At the rate this is going, I will empty all my pokemon from my main Diamond game onto the Ranch by the weekend. That means even with Pal Parking, I will plateau my pokemon count around 500. Catching pokemon is much faster than hatching eggs, so in my spare time, I should start walking in grass again soon.
That reminds me, I should send an egg over to the ranch to see what happens...could you image if a large number of eggs just suddenly hatched all at once. Like if you dropped off a box full of eggs and the next day all the eggs were hatched. No more biking from Route 209 to 210 and back...its only a dream...but who knows.

I dropped off about a dozen eggs and they are no closer to hatching. But they are cute! Especially in the parade. :D

The Ranch gets its name from the name you gave your Wii.
I traded for her Pikachu and it knows Grass Knot!
I'm trying to slowly deposit only the Pokemon she asks for so I can get all of their data in the BBS.

So my Ranch will be named NES Pokemon Ranch? (we named our wii 'NES' because we thought we were being witty)
Hope it comes out in Aus on Friday

No my pokedex has been complete for a very long time.
I am at 491 seen & obtained.
When Hayley asks for three pokemon, I have two in my boxes and one I need to fetch for her. I have kept the final evolution of every pokemon, but there wouldn't be enough room to farm keeping one of every evolution. Usually I just create and hatch an egg for whatever the third pokemon is she wants to see.

What do you think is going to happen to your Wii, is it going to get flushed down the toilet or something? An equal number of bad things can happen to your DS, where you won't be able to access the pokemon stored in the game, as can happen to a Wii.

Not to be rude but this wasn't a very constructive response for help. Yes any number of things can happen to a Wii or DS but I was wondering how you could get the pokes back so I (or anyone else) would not be out of all their hard work.
Has anyone tried transferring to an SD card like LovelyStrife suggested? Does it work? Just want to make sure all my bases are covered before I purchase the game.

Generally speaking, your pokes are quite safe on your Wii. They have a sturdy internal flash memory, and unless it is hit by a lightning bolt, things should be A-ok. One thing to consider is the age of your Wii. The older these electronic do-hickys get the more chance you will have for a breakdown. When you send it in for repair, nintendo can usually salvage the internal memory, but to be on the safe side I would recommend getting an SD card just for back-up! I certainly am. That's a lot of time and energy and investment down the drain IF something happened to it. Nintendo will recommend buying a BD+A sd card but any card will do. Hope that helps!

Day 3
Hayley came to the ranch with 4 Shinx today. At first I thought that number was odd. She brought 5 yesterday and 4 today. Both times I retrieved 6 Pokemon she requested to see. I think I figured it out. She brings one Pokemon each day and an additional Pokemon for each level your ranch expands that day. I went from 1 to 5 yesterday and from 5 to 8 today.
That being said, the only purpose of fulfilling her requests is to open up trades for her Pokemon.
Level 8. My new max is 100. Hayley has 15, so I get to have a total of 85 on the ranch. Now two toys will be delivered to the ranch each day. And a new feature opened up: Favorites. You can now label as many Pokemon as you want to be your favorites. When transferring the Pokemon back to your DS, you can select one at a time, a box at a time or all of your favorites at one time.
When the toys were delivered today, I got a punching bag and a snowman. MewTwo really liked the punching bag!!! My ice Pokemon really like the snowman, but any non-ice Pokemon who spent too much time around the snowman were frozen by the snowman's "breathe". It was funny!
http://forum.pokefarm.com/picture.php?albumid=50&pictureid=382
And just to be completely clear here...You can not copy your Wii saved Pokemon file to an SD card. I tried to do it tonight. Just like Gamecube Pokemon files, as soon as you select Copy, you get a message saying this file cannot be copied. This makes me nervous. I have all of my legendary Pokemon on that file, but I don't battle Ubers often enough to worry that much. I know as I approach 500 Pokemon, all of my boxes will be empty except for my gym team and maybe my E4 battle team. I would be sad if I lost them all! But 99% of them I could restart a game and capture again.
Here are the 85 I have uploaded:
http://forum.pokefarm.com/picture.php?albumid=50&pictureid=381
And here is the 100 total on my ranch:
http://forum.pokefarm.com/picture.php?albumid=50&pictureid=380
Tomorrow Hayley asked to bring a gray Pokemon...it is Magnezone.
With 100 Pokemon on the ranch, I should be at level 11 tomorrow, and Hayley should bring 4 Magnezone. I only brought Hayley 3 Pokemon she requested today, so it should be a good test of my calculation.

I have been fully brought back into Pokemon because of this thing.
My ranch is now sitting at about 554 pokemon, with the max at 1032 (1000 plus Hayley's) I've traded for the pikachu and phione so far, and am looking to get the mew. Only problem is that I feel i'll be doing a lot of clearing out afterwards since you need 999 for the mew. But getting my hands on what I'm positive is a legit mew seems worth it to me.
Anyone know if there is a way to 'soft reset' to get a certain nature with these things, or is that all pre-set and the same every time?

Hm, I dunno. I think that would depend on how Hayley gives you the pkmn. I think once she "trades" it to you for your own, all the data is set. You can't really soft reset Pokemon Ranch (not sure though).

That's my inclination also, I dont even know if there would be a way to check that prior to saving anyway to make that determination - unfortunately I think that mew is the only trading that i have left to do.
Oh well, they have a history of at least providing a /decent/ nature with those types of things.

She'll trade you about 20 different pokemon if you give her the pokemon on her wanted list. Look here (http://www.serebii.net/ranch/trade.shtml) and you can see some of the others. :)

Day 4
Upgraded the farm to level 11 today. Hayley brought 4 Magnazone, so for sure now; she brings one a day and one for each level increase. Not many new changes today. I now get three toys delivered each day. New max is 250 Pokemon.
The three toys today were another snowman, a poke bell and a slippery peel. The slippery peel was really funny. Every Pokemon walking by it slipped on it and the peel would shoot out across the ranch and another Pokemon would slip on it and the whole process kept repeating. The bell was fun too. You pick it up and shake it and a whole lot of Pokemon come running to check it out.
http://forum.pokefarm.com/picture.php?albumid=50&pictureid=415
After Viscosity's suggestion yesterday I went Unown hunting and caught over 50 yesterday. That really helped to fill my new ranch quota of 250 quickly. I spent some time trying to get a picture of the Unown standing together forming a word, but I never came up with anything. They did do a lot of the circle dancing together however. I should have nicknamed them to make it easier.

Hayley will be bringing bidoof tomorrow and my quota will be 500. To fill that quota, I will have to send over almost every Pokemon I have. I plan to Pal Park a lot of Pokemon and after that I will have to go wild Pokemon hunting.

I shouldn't have a problem filling the Ranch; I'll just start chaining again. I've been putting my chaining on hold because my game is too full to catch enough shinies. Australia = slow game releases

It might be, but there might be area issues. I have 1000 points put aside for Ranch, but if someone chose to gift that to me I'd feel obliged to spend those points on them...

I just thought of another way to get more pokemon on the ranch, revive all the fossils in your bag. If you go underground often enough, you should have lots of unrevived fossils. So revive all of those and you should get at least another 100 or so pokemon... maybe it is just quicker to catch a bunch of wild ones.

It all just depends on why you're putting them in. If you're puttin gin a bunch lf lv. 2 bidoof so that you can get it up to 999 and get a Mew, then I wouldn't worry. If you're using it to store important things, I agree with you. The only "good" pokemon I have in mine are some legendaries. My fighting teams are all safe in my game and won't find their way to the ranch. :)

Tip: If you transfer all the types of Unown, they form an interesting pattern. ;)

Try to get them in a group and get them to look at the camera as you take a picture. From what I've been told, they form the "pattern" naturally.

I spent a few minutes watching my large herd of Bidoof dancing around a bonfire. I think they were getting ready for some sort of ritual.
Then they stampeded all the way to other side of the ranch. It was quite intense watching the "Running of the Bidoof". A few poor Pokemon were trampled by the rising tide of Bidoof.

Day 5
The ranch is upgraded to level 15. The ranch can now hold 500 Pokemon and four toys will be delivered each day. Hayley brought 5 Bidoof to the ranch.
I didn't quite see the purpose of the toys until my eight year old son came over tonight. He finds the toys as a wonderful way of torturing my Pokemon. Until I drop a hint that I am glad he is throwing my Pokemon into the bonfire and not me.
Toys today are burst ball, bonfire, poke cushion and poke spring. The bonfire attacks a lot of bugs and fire Pokemon. The Pokemon just sit in a circle around it until your son comes along and pushes them all into the flames. Then they run away smoldering. The burst ball is great for torture too. All the Pokemon gather around in wondering what it is until something touches it. Then it explodes and all the Pokemon go flying off. Again the eight year old in everyone likes to pick Mii up and drop Mii on the burst ball when a couple Pokemon are around it. The poke spring was pretty popular amongst ground Pokemon. It shoots them high up into the air. The poke cushion was pretty much ignored.

I upload enough Pokemon to fill the 500 limit. Not much remaining in my boxes any more.

day 6
The ranch is upgraded to level 20. The limit is increased to 1000 Pokemon. Hayley informs me she increased the size of the stable where her Pokemon will be staying so her Pokemon will not count towards the limit of Pokemon on the ranch, but they will count towards the total number of Pokemon on the ranch which helps to level up the ranch. The ranch will get 5 toys each day now and Hayley says the toys will have more variety. Hayley brought 5 Slowbro to the ranch today.
The toys today were a challenger (kinda punching dummy), poke cannon, poke pendulum, poke balloons and another slippery peel. If a Pokemon sits and stares at the pendulum too long, they fall asleep. The poke balloons life a Pokemon off the ground. However the toy of the day was the cannon. By now the farm is huge! So firing a Pokemon across the ranch is pretty cool. My son spent 20 minutes trying to shoot Mii out of the cannon, but it wouldn't load Mii.
http://forum.pokefarm.com/picture.php?albumid=50&pictureid=419
Every Pokemon from my Diamond game has been loaded onto the Ranch, except for my Gym team and my HM slaves. So if that doesn't make this obvious...my farm is closed for a couple days. I am completely out of Pokemon to trade. I will have to IV battle for anything that was still on my PC boxes, because they are almost empty! Good thing my kids were over this weekend, I Pal Parked some of their Pokemon over. Total ranch count is 652.

Well, I am off to sleep before work tonight.
Hopefully it will be dead at the airport so I can collect Pokemon.
I just checked and I have just a little over 300 fossils.
I will be turning fossils into Pokemon tonight.
That will get me really close to 1000. Pal Park some more of my children's Pokemon and I should be able to get a Mew for a father's day gift...yeah me!

How do you atach your ds to the wii to transfer your pokemon?
The Wii and DS should communicate via wireless, so there is nothing needed to attach one to the other. When you go to the transfer option, it should ask you to select the "Connect to Wii" (or something of similar nature) in the game select menu.
The two systems then communicate, give multiple warnings that you can't recover pokémon from the ranch if you restart your game, then finally allows you to deposit, withdraw pokémon.

Here are all the things that the unown can do in the game:
form a cirlce and do tribal dances
join in on the sky parade
form a computer keyboard and go through the alphabet song
when the ranch is large enough, the unown will arrange themselves in a circle (I have yet to see any word or phrase in the circle yet)

day 7
Ranch is upgraded to level 21. Nothing new at that level.
Toys are mostly repeats. Spin toy, water fountain and poke pallet are new, but they didn't get much play.

http://forum.pokefarm.com/picture.php?albumid=50&pictureid=420
http://forum.pokefarm.com/picture.php?albumid=50&pictureid=422
The new Pokemon count is 882 and I started noticing that the graphics are getting very laggy. The level of detail is poor and the frame rate really starts dropping as you zoom out and try to move around. I used to look for the toy boxes by moving camera myself, but its almost to the point where I can't. On top of that, if you drop a box and it opens, you have to zoom all the way in in order to pick up the toy. And once you have the toy, you can't zoom out. Make sure you have your bearings before picking anything up.

day 9
I am not happy.
So at first I was thinking the requirement to get a Mew was a ranch count of 1000 Pokemon. Nope. I had 965 uploaded and Hayley had 37 on the ranch. And she made no mention of a new trade. I have plenty of eggs on the farm and the 1000th Pokemon onto the ranch was an egg. So. Discouraged, but determined. I turned the TV to a TV show and handed over the last of my fossils, caught some wild Pokemon and picked up another 15 eggs until 36 total Pokemon ready to upload. Shows over, I go back to the ranch. I upload 35 of the 36 I had prepared...it won't take the 1001st Pokemon. Proud of my work I save and turn off the DS expecting Hayley to have something to say. Nope.
1037 Pokemon on the ranch. 1000 mine. 37 Hayley's. No trade for a Mew.
So. The real requirement is upgrading the ranch to level 25. I will have to wait until tomorrow to trade for my mew. Yes. I could move my Wii date ahead...but I will wait.
A couple of the 1037 are not lined up, but I can't wait for everyone to take the picture. The parade starts too quickly.
http://forum.pokefarm.com/picture.php?albumid=50&pictureid=430
And the toys...
http://forum.pokefarm.com/picture.php?albumid=50&pictureid=429
Three repeats: burst bomb, challenger and slippery peal.
Two new: Poke drum and attractor.
The Pokemon were not really interested in the toys today...but they kept chasing Mii and tackling Mii down to the ground...poke pile.

I couldn't sleep well, so being awake at 4:45 this morning and leaving for work in less than an hour I decided to turn on the Wii instead of trying to go back to sleep, sleeping through alarm and ending up late for work.
Ranch is upgraded to level 25. Hayley brings two Walrein and her Mew to celebrate a complete ranch. Six toys will be delivered each morning from now on.
Although all 6 toys are repeats today: Challenger, drum, slippery peal, cushion, bell and cannon.

I had plenty of eggs on the ranch before today, but that is not good enough. If you want her to trade you pokemon, you must deposit the pokemon she wants after it shows up on her list. So if its already on the farm, withdrawal it and deposit it again and the pokemon on the wanted list will be marked complete.
I now own Hayley's Mew, but I didn't have the time to withdrawal it and check it out. Side note: soft-resetting to get better IVs and preferred nature is not an option. The game saves right after the trade and you cannot check it out before the trade.
This is the first time I have played My Pokemon Ranch in the morning hours. Many people have talked about visiting a ranch of nothing but Bidoof, but today was my first time. Bobby, a computer generated trainer showed me his ranch of 120 Bidoofs and told me to watch out for other trainers like him. I am curious if this is a morning hours only trigger.
---
So there you have it.
After 10 days of spending time on the ranch I think I have seen the majority of what this game has to offer. I added up my log files and I have spent less than 12 hours on the ranch. There is nothing that I expect would hold me to playing this game for any amount of time in the future.
I love the box space! I also love knowing I have a legit Mew! However, Nintendo/Game Freaks could have done so much more with this piece of art. For $10 it is still definately worth it!

Maybe Platinum will have that feature.

I don't think I will.
Its nice to be able to quickly pull a small group off the ranch quickly, but its a descent size hassle to get to that point. Go home, turn on Wii, start My Pokemon Ranch (with music off), save pokemon diamond, turn off DS, click on "connect to ds", turn on DS, start tansfer and then pick pokemon to withdraw.
I think its just better to keep favorite pokemon on DS game instead.

Serebii actually changed the requirements the other day.
Yes. The requirement is a level 25 ranch.
So you have to deposit enough pokemon from diamond/pearl games to get the pokemon count up to 999.
And then wait until the following day for Hayley to complete the ranch expansion.
Then deposit an egg to trade with Hayley.

What moves does the Toxicroak know?
I suspect is has something to do with it being the only pokemon who knows a specific HM move left in your possession.

i think that i found out that it was 16 (correct me if that's wrong plz)

I just got pokemon Ranch and I can't use free mode so I'm missing out on all the action TT.TT. What level does my Ranch has to be for me to be allowed to use free mode?

It was 5 or 10. If you want to speed it up just se the day forward on your wii and put more pokemon in.

I just got the mew from my ranch today. :2heart: It is absolutely adorable. My first mew. ^_^
The first day that I had my ranch, I moved the days forward because I needed to free up box space. Just be careful if you set the time backwards. The game will tell you that turning the clock back can mess up the game. I haven't noticed anything bad from it... yet.

I'm thankful that Haley asks me to get pokemon not found on my Dex. It's getting me off my lazy butt:D

I hate that. There are perfectly good reasons for each pokemon not in my dex not being in my dex. (the main one being I can't be bothered to catch and/or level them, but that is beside the point I think I might be trying to convince myself I'm making)
Why can't she ask for what I"m breeding? I can give her 100 Oddish right now if she asked me too. But no, she wants me to bring things like Azumarill and Chimecho and other things that actually take effort to catch and put on the ranch. >.>
Has she traded you anything good for what you put on your ranch? I think I got a Miltank yesterday when I gave her a Garchomp. (a Garchomp I got from GTS, so minimal effort was expended in putting it on the ranch)

Lovelystrife i know why she wouldent ask for oddish. Hayley only asks for pokes not in your pokedex so u havent caught them yet. As u already has oddishes she wouldent of asked. If u dident have any she might of asked!

Not entirely true. She asks for randoms if you already have a completed dex. If you don't, she asks for pokemon you don't have in it.
Slizer, Hayley asks you to bring in certain pokemon. Sometimes, if you do bring an asked-for pokemon, she will ask you if you want to trade for it.

To be entirely fair, I did not have an Oddish before I started breeding them. I only had Gloom. >.>

Try bringing them one at a time lol
What happens is that she says "Oh, X is a pokemon I've always wanted. Would you like to trade your X for my Y? My Y looks like this: (cut scene of pokemon walking and a dex entry)
When you leave the ranch and she wants to know what pokemon to bring tomorrow - she asks "Is a ___ pokemon okay for tomorrow?" Say no. Then say no again when she asks again. Then she'll say "Okay, leave it to me, I know one that's perfect" or something like that. That pokemon is one she will trade you.
