I know this question is going to make me seem really ignorent for being
a regular user of pokefarm, but how do the egg moves work?
I understand the basics:
male can pass on Tms
both have to know an eventually learned move to pass it one
However, I have never really understood egg moves. For example, gastly can learn fire punch, ice punch, and thunderpunch through "egg moves". Can anyone tell me whats behind the "egg moves"
Thanks much! ;)

Example:
If the move you want is a TM, then you give to it to a boy Pokemon. Then as long as the female Pokemon can breed with the male Pokemon, it's ok. That's why some strange Pokemon can learn strange moves. It's because the female Pokemon is the species of the baby Pokemon. Do you get it a little better?

okay, so hypothetically
it means if i wanted to get a gastly with fire punch i would teach
a chimchar/monferno/etc.. fire punch (since they are compatible)
breed, and it would go through?
i thought Tm's naturally passed on though.
i guess though if i taught chimchar dig or something it wouldnt pass on
okay, it makes a lot more sense now
thanks a lot

Example
Venusaur can learn earthquake, but bulbasaur cannot. So that would not be passed on. Some pokemon can learn tms when they are older but not younger. Their type has to be able to use it.
Check Serebii for compatible egg moves or get Nintendo Power Official Pokedex it will have everything you need.

Best way to get a Gastly to learn fire, ice, and thunder punch is to breed a male Dusclops or Dusknoir with your female Gastly. Egg moves basicly go by the egg group. That is where Pokemon with 2 egg groups come in handy. They can take a move from a Pokemon that would never be able to breed with your target Pokemon and pass them on. I have seen chains of 6 Pokemon being bred together to just move on 1 move to a single Pokemon.
