mystery gift isn't like it was in 2nd Generation. Basically right now mystery gift is only good if you have the new Pokemon Game for the Wii as it will transfer items and Pokemon to your game. Other then that it has no use until Nintendo has some sort of wifi event (which I hope they do) or when every the release what the Friend option does.
