The field shone in a golden hue as the sun descended beyond the lush, green hills. Such a beautiful sight could not help but to calm Andy and Maxine as they waited for the moon to rise. Deoxys counted down the seconds until sunset. <<Three… Two… And one…>>
A flash of light burst through the sky, the sun making its final appearance for the day. Then, the world turned pitch black. “Deoxys!” Andy called out, “what’s going on?”
“Good evening…” a deep, forceful voice moaned.
Darkrai.
The whole world seemed to be distorted, as if seen through a kaleidoscope. Jirachi looked around warily, watching for a sign of life nearby. Suddenly, a blast of lightning rocked the tumultuous black sky. Jirachi gasped in fear. Two black tubes descended to the ground in front of Jirachi. They shortened, and Darkrai appeared in a malevolent air. <<No!>> Jirachi cried out, and shot a Psychic at Darkrai. The black creature cackled evilly. “Mwahaha! Do you think there is any hope of your survival?” It lifted its inky hand and yelled “Dark Pulse!” The orb sped toward Jirachi’s frail body, impacting it as the Wish Pokémon let out a pained cry.
“What is this nightmare?” Jirachi asked. Darkrai simply cackled.
“That’s exactly what it is—a Nightmare.”
“Look out, Flygon!”
A Dark Pulse came whizzing past Andy, Maxine, and Flygon, missing Flygon’s left wing by mere inches. “You will not succeed!” Darkrai boomed. “This is my world now, a world of pure darkness!”
Darkrai waved its hand to the side, and three shadowed figures came forward. Andy squinted and recognized the trio: “Peter! Ellie! Cyrus!”
“What have you done to them?” cried Maxine.
“It’s the same thing I’m going to do to you!” replied Darkrai before attacking with another Dark Pulse. This time, its aim was better, hitting Maxine and sending her off of Flygon. “Maxine, noo!” Andy yelled out. Her body disappeared into the dark fog that enveloped the land and sky.
“Now, to finish you two…”
“Stop right there, Darkrai!
Andy looked above her to see a Pokémon with a swan-like figure. “Cresselia?”
Cresselia emitted a calming cry and sped toward Darkrai.
“Psychic!”
“Dark Pulse!”
The attacks were released even as the two advanced toward one another. An explosion occurred as the two attacks collided midway. As the smoke from the collision cleared, Andy noticed that both Pokémon were preparing for another attack.
“Deoxys, what do we do?” she yelled amongst the turmoil.
<<There’s nothing that can be done to stop them now…>> it replied as if deep in thought. It appeared tired from the events of the last few days.
Darkrai heard Andy talking to Deoxys, momentarily distracted from Cresselia. It let off a Dark Pulse in the other Pokémon’s direction before turning to Andy. “Do not try to meddle in this battle! You are nothing to the future of this world, you puny human!”
“No, you didn’t…” Andy began to fume with anger. “I’ll show you I’m not insignificant! Flygon, let’s go!” Andy jumped on Flygon and zoomed toward Darkrai.
“Please stop!” Cresselia cried. “You’ll only get hurt!” It flew in front of the advancing Flygon and put up a Safeguard. “Just stay out of this!”
“Obviously, you don’t understand, Cresselia,” another voice called out. “Losing isn’t an option!”
Andy looked to see Maxine speeding toward Darkrai on her Dragonair. “Dragon Rush!”
“No, stop!” cried Cresselia, but it was too late. Dragonair barreled into Darkrai, pushing it back just a little. “Pathetic,” it laughed evilly. Maxine shook her head in disbelief. “It’s too strong!”
“Finally, you have given in to the truth! I am the strongest being on this pitiful planet, and I shall control you all!”
“No!”
“Who is it now?”
Jirachi flew up next to Maxine and Andy, glaring angrily at Darkrai. “How dare you trap me in your horrible nightmares! This ends now! Doom Desire!”
A flash of light shone through the dark clouds, yet nothing happened. “Ha ha ha!” Darkrai cackled. “You all are worthless—“
Without warning, a beam of silvery-white light blasted Darkrai head-on. “Doom Desire takes a while to charge, but it’s worth it in the end, Darkrai!”
“You all disgust me!” Darkrai cried out. “This is the end for you all! Dark Void!”
The field was covered in black mist once again, and there was no time for anyone to get away. “Flieeee!” Andy’s Flygon called out. Make a wish to Jirachi! “That’s right—the wish!”
Andy joined hands with Jirachi and began to make the wish.
“I wish that Darkrai’s evil plan never existed!”
As Andy’s eyelids fell closed, she saw the blue light coming from Jirachi’s ribbon. Then, darkness… Sleep…
A beeping sound broke Andy’s sleep, and she opened her eyes.
“I’m…in my room?"
She shut off the alarm and opened her curtains. Her unevolved Vibrava flew up to window and greeted her with a warm smile before gently gliding onto her bedroom floor. Andy noticed a small white envelope tied around its neck.
“What’s this?’’ she said, and opened the envelope. A note had been scrawled to the point of near illegibility:
“Andy, Thanks for the help. Darkrai’s dreams are vanished memories, and our world may now rest without nightmares. –Jirachi”
Andy placed the envelope on her bed, and it fell to the floor. As she picked it up, she saw a blue object sticking out of the top. “Vibra?” She pulled the object out.
“A ribbon?”
A blue ribbon lay in Andy’s hands. Flipping it over, she saw a message written in an unrecognizable language. “The Wish Ribbon!”
Vibrava handed her another slip of paper.
“Let this ribbon be a constant reminder of the adventure that almost occurred. Thank Arceus it didn’t.”
Andy smiled and placed the ribbon in her pocket.
“Andy? Are you up? Breakfast is on the table! You have to get ready for the race!”
The Great Race suddenly came back to her. “You know, Mom? I think I’ve had enough racing for a while. I’ll just go next year, OK?” She turned to Vibrava. “Come on, Vibrava; let’s go watch the racers take off.” Andy jumped on and rode off into the peaceful morning air.
