STOP!! If you have not read the Prologue: http://forum.pokefarm.com/showthread.php?t=5451, READ NO FURTHER.
First draft, open to change. I'm still hunting for grammar horrors.
“Two Years Earlier”
”Common!!” -Lucy pushed herself while purposely shortening each and every of her steps in order to run faster. She was already going downhill at top lung, zigzagging in between the large oaks trees. The cold, humid air of the morning; the tall, dark shadows provided by the forest’s trees; These factors created the perfect climate for running. Too bad the uneven terrain did not help. Lucy leaped over a boulder and rolled on her back to avoid the puddle of mud three feet behind it. All the muscles in her body working in unison to maintain momentum.
Her legs were screaming, she had been running all night. Still, she was as agile as ever, cutting through the mountain like a sword through a piece of paper, like a Rapidash through a field. Her concentration was broken by a pokemon’s shadow going over her shoulder. It was gone as fast as it came, flying over the tree line. “It was pretty big, was it another Fearow? Maybe it was his Crobat. Either way I must be getting close.” -As Lucy made a mental note of her position the agonizing screeching of several Phanpy reached her ear. To Lucy, the cry of innocent Pokemon feels like somebody is tearing a tiny piece of her heart, and as her soul dies a little, the empty space is filled with sorrow… and anger. “Hand on a little longer, small ones, the Rangers are coming.”
Alerted by officer Jenny, RHQ sent a team to investigate and apprehend poachers in the area. Being a simple mission they sent Lucy, a Level 3 Ranger; and her new partner. She knew little about him, except he was an ex-con of sorts. And so far in their two previous missions together he did everything by the book. Except this mission would prove to be everything but simple. It seems the poachers were more organized and had a larger number than anticipated.
The day before they were inserted in the area. A few hours later they fell in a trap set up by the poachers, aided by a flock of their Fearow. They were both relieved of their Stylers, divided and sent to two different camps. Stylers, like region rare pokemon can bring a hefty sum in the black market. Thanks to a distraction created by her partner, she was able to escape. Between the two, working separate, they were able to thwart about half of the poachers’ operations.
But without her Styler (the Pokemon Ranger utility tool that works as a PDA/COMM, and more importantly a tool to get help pokemon and their powers without having to actually capture them in conventional Poke Balls) the feat proved to extremely hard.
Only half the work was done, they needed to stop the main force from escaping with their loot. No COMM left them without support, no Styler left them on foot. Hence the midnight run.
As Lucy made it to the shore of the river, she changed directions towards the sound of a horn of a large ship, and now the sound of a fight. No doubt Jake made it there first. The ship was a good 600 yards out, and the sand under her feet was wreaking chaos on her speed. “Was that an explosion on the deck? No, a Pokemon’s Flamethrower.”
While Lucy tried to keep up her speed with the now fleeing ship a large Crobat glided next to her. “Crooo-bat!” -It yelled as it threw a antenna-looking apparatus at Lucy, “My Styler, thanks buddy” -She let the Styler’s hand guard slide down on her wrist. “Now we can have a fair fight.”
Crobat gave a side look to her and yelped a “Crooo!” in agreement. It flew two feet ahead, flew up and flipped behind Lucy by knee-high picking her up. At first surprised she quickly remembered seeing Jake ride his Crobat like a surfboard. “Wind surfing, he calls it. Will Crobat get hurt?” -She wondered. But without thinking it twice, leaped from her sitting position on Crobat, now in midair.
In less than five seconds Crobat closed the distance to the boat. Flying over Jake, and after dropping Lucy on the aft section, Crobat went back behind his trainer. Jake was obviously tired, outnumbered by three grunts and three of their pokemon. His uniform was scorched after evading a few Flamethrowers, but strangely enough, he had a grin smile on his face. Like he was enjoying the fight. “Get to the pokemon down below.” -He yelled to Lucy while kneeling next to an unconscious grunt an pulling an electro-baton off his hands, “We got you covered.”
Even though Rangers are extensively trained in martial arts and close quarter combat, they are only supposed to use force in the extreme of cases. “No doubt those electric batons caused the Phanpy to cry, don’t break a leg, partner.” -Lucy thought to herself while walking down the stairs.
As Jake activated the baton, twirled it on his right hand, and placed it behind him in a defensive position; his Crobat swiftly flapped all his four wings at the same time and performed a flawless and almost invisible Air Cutter on one of the opponents’ Kangaskhan, making it faint in one hit.
The first of the three grunts, watching his pokemon faint, came running at Jake while swinging his baton, Jake reflected the attack with his own baton, grabbed his opponent’s right wrist with his left hand, kicked him above the knee with his left foot, making the grunt loose his footing; pulled the grunt against himself, punched him on the stomach, and elbowed him in the face with his right arm. As the unconscious grunt fell down he relieved him of his baton.
In the meanwhile Crobat laid a barrage of Wing Attacks on the Quilava pair, who were trying to hit it with Flamethrower in vain.
The next grunt did not want to wait for his turn and tried to stab Jake, electro-baton activated. He deflected the attack, sparks fling, jabbed the baton on the grunt’s thigh who screamed and kneeled. Then Jake jabbed him in the neck with his other stick knocking him out cold.
With the quilava pair beaten and worse yet, surrounded by a Ranger and his evil-looking giant Crobat; the grunt decided to run and fight another day jumping out of the ship. “Hahaha, he can run, but will only get to prison tired. Go get him.” -Jake looked at his Crobat and pointed to the water.
While Crobat was busy ‘fishing’ the poacher, Jake made his way to the bridge, only to find out it was empty. “Really small crew for such a large boat.” He thought to himself. Then the cargo hold doors opened and an elevator pulled up a small helicopter.
As the rotors on the chopper started the COMM on the bridge blared, “You, you Rangers, you haven’t seen the last of me!!”. Jake was too far and too late to do anything, so he just grabbed the helm and started to turn the ship around.
As the chopper flew off Lucy came in with her Styler up high followed by 15-20 Phanpy. “You haven’t seen the last of me!!! Hahaha, a little cliché, isn’t it?” Now her mood completely lifted. “Monsters, they hosed down the Phanpy so they could use those electric sticks and get them inside the cages. Grrrh, makes me so mad.!!”
“So Boss, I take it you guys are OK?” -Jake inquired. Even though they are partners, Lucy still has a higher rank.
“Oh, we’re good, right guys?” -The entire bunch of Phanpy jumped and cheered with little tiny voices. “I wonder who these guys were, though.” Lucy murmured.
“Mr. Shiny Suit flying off confirms it, they’re Team Galactic. But what are they doing here in Kanto?” -Jake replied.
“Oh you won’t believe it…” -Lucy stated. “When I was making my way downstairs, I took this laptop off the chopper. It says something about finding an ancient Jirachi Meteorite. Can you believe it? Are these guys for real?”
“Mmmh…” -Jake said at loud. “Now the question is: What’s a ‘Girachi’?”
“You’ve got to be kidding me…” -Lucy replied. “JI-RA-CHI… the children’s bed time story… all those books… ringing any bells?
Jake looked at Lucy with a blank, empty stare. Lucy picked up a Phanpy. “I’ll tell you the story, just like I remember it.” She looked at the Phanpy and made a funny face at it, making it laugh. “But first, we have to take these tiny ones home.”
