“In the beginning, there was only
a churning turmoil of chaos.
At the heart of chaos, where all
things became one, appeared an Egg.
Having tumbled from the vortex, the
Egg gave rise to the Original One.
From itself, two beings the Original
One did make.
Time started to spin.
Space began to expand.
From itself again, three living things
the Original One did make.
The two beings wished, and from them,
matter came to be.
The three living things wished, and
from them, spirit came to be.
The world created, the Original One
took to unyielding sleep...”
--The Original Story
Chaos.
Turmoil.
A single Egg traversed the universe, waiting for its moment to hatch. Time passed without beginning or end, and then…
Birth.
Chapter 1—Genesis
Without moving, it opened its eyes. They darted around, viewing the abyss around them.
It was born.
Arceus shook its body, releasing the shell that had encased it for so long to travel out into the beyond. I shall create, it thought to itself. Arceus closed its eyes, shutting out the chaotic scene around it. It focused on one image in its young brain: a celestial plane. Before its figure, the vision became reality. Arceus opened its eyes and felt a tinge of satisfaction with another of longing. I…want more… But why should I do all the work? I require assistance to fulfill my desires.
Arceus opened its mouth, and a white light began to encase its figure. The Pokémon’s colors fluctuated wildly, and its eyes flashed at the same level and speed. Then, it shot a white beam from its body, which arced in three directions. The rays halted in between Arceus and the blue sphere and began to take shape. On the left, a quadruped of diamond and deep blue. On the right, an erect figure of pearl and pale rose. And in the middle, a many-legged beast of dark hues and moods.
Dialga of time.
Palkia of space.
Giratina of dimensions.
All created under the god Arceus.
“Creations!” Arceus barked to its new beings. “You shall serve under me! Create a new universe where we shall reside and rule!
“I give you, Dialga, the power to manipulate time. To you, Palkia, the ability to manipulate space. And for Giratina, the power to traverse dimensions. Now go! Do your duty to me, the Lord Arceus!”
Giratina spread its inky wings and disappeared into the abyss. Palkia and Dialga roared dutifully, bowed to their new master, and retreated to the horizon to fulfill their tasks.
…I feel as though I will need more servants, more bodies to serve at my will. I must create more.
Once again, Arceus glowed in a brilliant white tone, creating three more pixie-like Pokémon. They all looked similar except for the different color accompanying the white that covered their torsos.
It turned to the creature of the left, decorated in yellow. The pixie’s eyes were closed, and its face kept a calm expression. “Uxie,” Arceus stated, “is your name, and you are the Being of Knowledge.” Uxie kept its eyes closed and gave a slight nod.
Turning to the middle creature with a magenta shade, it said, “You are Mesprit, the Being of Emotion.” Mesprit looked at Arceus and merely blinked in approval.
“Finally, Azelf,” said Arceus to the final pixie in blue, “the Being of Willpower.
“You three shall control the ways of future generations, to ensure my power and their safety. Go on to this new domain of mine, and prepare yourselves for tomorrow.” The trio of Pokémon bowed to Arceus and set off to the surrounding universe.
I am growing weak from all of this creation… However, more is required to be put in place…
Arceus roared, and a rift shifted the patterns of the universe. Out of this rift, a blank sphere appeared, as if a canvas for Arceus and its creations to turn into a masterpiece. Yet again, three figures appeared before the god: beasts in red, blue, and green, colors essential to the pallet that would paint this new world.
“You are Groudon of the land, Kyogre of the sea, and Rayquaza of the sky. You bow down to me! This is my command: Shape this new world into a place where higher beings like I may reside! Go now, and perform your tasks!” The Pokémon, just like Arceus’s previous creations, proceeded to do their duty to their lord without any contrary thought.
Arceus created the next beings much more easily and quickly. “Regigigas,” as it was named, “I give you the power to move continents. Go forth and bring definition to the earth you see below.” Arceus tilted its head, gazing at the new world in construction, and a pool of lava from a restless volcano spread over part of the land just created by Groudon. Another Pokémon was born of the lava and magma: Heatran.
I must rest… Arceus thought as a wave of fatigue rushed over it. I need one final creation…
Mew.
It was a pink, cat-like creature with a long, thin tail. It looked at its holy creator and uttered a kind cry.
“Mew… A spectacular creation. You have a gift: a telepathic bond with your Lord Arceus himself. I must rest, but I leave this world in your hands; create more of these creatures if they are necessary. I shall guide you in my slumber. I trust that you shall create new species as I see fit. It is a gift, Mew, and I believe you shall serve me well.”
“Mew,” the new Pokémon said, and glided peacefully down to the new world.
Arceus looked to the wonderous plane around it. All of this had been created with its own power! It was the ultimate being! However, Arceus recognized that a price came with its abilities as a second wave of fatigue drained it. It is time to rest…
Arceus flew down to the new world that was being created. This new celestial body would be a good resting place while it regained strength. A pillar stood erect at the peak of a large mountain. Arceus easily stood atop it and created a winding spiral staircase. This way, no one shall disturb me as I rest… It climbed to the landing, where it created a golden hall. A perfect resting spot. However, how will I be awoken once more when it is my time to serve? Arceus pondered the idea, and after a moment of thought, created the Azure Flute. It thrust the instrument deep into the ground of the mountain below, allowing time to erode the earth surrounding it, revealing it to the new generations of later times.
At last, my work is done… Arceus adjusted its posture to a resting position in the middle of the hall. I shall rest, until the Azure Flute plays, notifying me that I am needed once more. It let out one final deafening roar, closed its eyes, and drifted into a deep slumber.

A deafening cry sounded, echoing throughout the whole universe. Each of the new Pokémon immediately understood that Arceus was their lord, and it needed rest. With the high lord now deep in slumber, it was up to Mew to fulfill its sole duty of creating new Pokémon for its god’s new world. However, a conflict was rising, just as the universe had mere moments ago…
Chapter 2—First Blood
Twelve Pokémon were now left to carry out the missions left by Lord Arceus. Giratina, Dialga, and Palkia were still out at the outer border of the universe, known to them as the Edge. Down on the new planet, Rayquaza, Kyogre, and Groudon were guarding their specific elements. Regigigas stood firmly at the center of the planet, using ocean currents as ropes to pull the continents into shape. Uxie, Mesprit, and Azelf, looking for a place to wait until they were summoned, found three lake formations near Mt. Coronet, where Heatran lay dormant like the once-flowing lava inside the volcano. The trio, splitting up, each inhabited a different cave that sat in the center of each lake. All throughout, Mew glided around the new world, gaining inspiration for new Pokémon.
Groudon, standing on a coastline just formed by Regigigas, was feeling the movements of the earth. It looked out on the horizon, filled from top to bottom with the blues of the sea and the sky. More earth would suit this world nicely… it thought. After all, how will all of these Pokémon get around? For some reason, most of them can only travel across land, the element I control! I would be doing a most pleasing duty to the other Pokémon if I add more land!
Meanwhile, Kyogre swam gracefully through the water near the same coast. This water is so peaceful and comfortable… I think that the other Pokémon would enjoy it as well. But there is so much land that they don’t even think to use the water… Well, I believe that the only solution is to add more water to the earth. The others will thank me in the end; I’m sure of it!
Groudon walked to where the water washed upon the shore…
Kyogre surfaced just in front of the coastline…
“You!”
“You!”
The two legendary Pokémon met eyes.
“I am extending the coastline to make it easier for the other Pokémon to travel and enjoy our new world!”
“I am extending the sea for the other Pokémon to travel in!”
“There’s already too much land!”
“You know very well that the other Pokémon cannot travel on water!”
“They haven’t tried because they are happy with your pathetic land! Why isn’t someone moving the seas like Regigigas moves the earth?”
“The land is much easier for them to travel on!”
“How do you know? None of you have ever thought once of using the water to travel!”
“That’s it!” Groudon roared angrily.
“No more arguing!” cried an equally distraught Kyogre. “We shall let Arceus’ powers do the talking!”
Each Pokémon let out a mighty roar. Groudon, crouching low to the ground, slammed one of its fists into the earth, shaking the plates below the surface. The waters in which Kyogre floated shook violently, angering the Sea Basin Pokémon. It surfaced just enough for Groudon to see its raging disposition. Letting out another cry, Kyogre shot a cold stream of water at Groudon, hitting it square in the chest. “Aah!” Groudon growled in pain, falling onto the earth. “So, it seems that quaking the earth has little effect on Kyogre of the water? Let’s try this, then!” Groudon looked to the blazing sun above, letting its rays infuse with the power coursing through its veins. It gave a confident smirk at its rival and opened its mouth; a glowing sphere began to grow inside of its jaws. The power now reaching its zenith, Groudon released the sphere as a bright beam that shot toward Kyogre, sending it flying back through the sea. “What was that?!” Kyogre yelled. “Hmm, you seem to be weak to me when I incorporate the rays of the sun…” Groudon reflected.
Kyogre shot out of the water like a bullet. “Let us settle this score! Whoever wins can do what they wish to the land and sea! Give me your all, Groudon!”
“You want it that way, Kyogre? I accept your challenge!” Groudon replied.
Yards turned into feet, and then inches between the two. Kyogre summoned waves that crashed over the land, breaking it down. Groudon shook the land and blasted the seas with solar heat, evaporating the water. After many an exchange of attacks, the two Pokémon took a moment to rest and regain power. The once glorious world in which they lived had been reduced to rubble and ruin by their fighting.
“This…is the…final blow…” Kyogre panted.
“We will…end this… right here and now…” Groudon sighed in exhaustion.
The earth and the sea shook and moved as the two rival Pokémon prepared to deliver their ending attacks. All would be over shortly…
“Stop!”
A green creature shot between Kyogre and Groudon, flying between them before stopping just above to look down upon both of them. “I am Rayquaza!” the dragon-like Pokémon yelled. “Our Lord Arceus charged me with overseeing the two of you! Look around you; look at what your fighting has done to our beautiful home! It is nothing but ruins now; all because of your petty disagreements!”
“Stay out of this!” Groudon yelled gruffly.
“This is our battle, not yours!” added Kyogre.
“You do not understand…” Rayquaza boomed. “I am completely a part of this battle! If Lord Arceus were to awaken at this very moment, I would be charged with destroying this world, because I am supposed to be looking over you two! Now, you shall be punished!”
Rayquaza’s body hummed in place, preparing to move at hyperspeed. In one blink of an eye, it swiftly flew Groudon and Kyogre to a region equally divided between land and water. In one movement, Groudon was placed on a flat area of land as Kyogre was plunged deep underwater. “Perhaps this time away from one another will serve as a good reminder to keep your anger under control!” Rayquaza yelled as two caves rose to surround Groudon and Kyogre. The Sky High Pokémon created two orbs. To seal the Pokémon away, Rayquaza sapped each Pokémon of their power and sealed it inside the orbs, which turned the color of their respective Pokémon’s exterior. “Goodbye, Groudon and Kyogre!” With the two Pokémon now too weak to fight back, Rayquaza sealed the sole exit to the caves, imprisoning Groudon and Kyogre for many ages.
The skies had darkened from the fight. A rumble of thunder boomed loudly as a crack of lightning ran perpendicular between the sky, the sea, and the earth. “Groudon and Kyogre have been silenced,” Rayquaza thought aloud, “but I fear that their dispute is only foreshadowing of greater conflict to come…”

There shouldn't be too long a wait for more... I'm excited once Ch. 4 and 5 come along; that's when things get intense. Plus, with the extended story I'm planning, the chapters will likely go into the double-digits. :-D
Again, thanks so much for all of your support!

The storms began to recede once the fighting Pokémon were sealed away. However, the dark clouds still hung over the world like a guilty regret, deepening Rayquaza’s fears of the approaching conflicts to come. However, power was not in its hands; Mew was the one who was created to lead the other ancient Pokémon in the creation of Lord Arceus’ new world.
Chapter 3—In Case of Emergency
“Attention, everyone!” Mew’s quiet voice called out. It had gathered the other Pokémon at the foot of Mt. Coronet, miles below their god’s resting place.
“As some of you may know, the disruption felt recently was caused by Groudon of the land and Kyogre of the sea. Their overseer, Rayquaza, took control of the conflict and took the appropriate actions necessary to calm the Pokémon. However, we still face an impasse: We need new guardians of the land and the sea.” The other Pokémon murmured in agreement, waiting for Mew to unveil its new creations.
“So, after communicating with our High Lord Arceus, I have a few new Pokémon to introduce to you.” Mew closed its eyes and began to shine with a brilliant white outline, making it seem almost angelic.
“First, I have created Manaphy as a replacement to Kyogre. This new Pokémon has been granted control of the ocean, as well as the ability to reproduce. This will make it simpler for Manaphy to oversee all of the large bodies of waters that inhabit our world. Second, Shaymin, overseer of land. It can adapt to any situtation with its alternate form.”
The two Pokémon moved to stand beside their new peers.
“However,” Mew added, “I have been instructed to create a few more Pokémon. The next Pokémon I would like to introduce is Celebi.” A small, green Pokémon hovered beside Mew. “Celebi is a guardian of time.”
“Master Mew?” Dialga questioned. “Forgive me, but I believe that Celebi’s assistance is not necessary. I am quite capable of managing the flow of time on my own, if I may say so.” Celebi gave a slight glare of annoyance at Dialga.
“Celebi is our local guardian, if you will,” Mew replied. “It controls the flow of time on our planet, while you, Dialga, control the general timestream of the universe.”
“I understand. Please forgive me,” Dialga bowed to Mew, but still silently thought negatively of Celebi’s creation.
“Jirachi is my final creation of this new group,” Mew continued as Celebi joined the other Pokémon. “This Pokémon can fulfill wishes of Pokémon once the world has grown. However, it can only stay awake for seven days every one thousand years, so that its power does not imbalance all of yours. It will return to its slumber after six more solar cycles.” Jirachi greeted its new friends happily and whizzed around everyone’s heads.
“That is all,” Mew finished. “You may now return to the tasks to which you are assigned. Thank you, everyone!” The other Pokémon began to disperse; however, Rayquaza and Dialga remained. The pair waited for everyone else to leave the area before approaching Mew, who grew weary from creating the new Pokémon.
“Mew.” Rayquaza sounded tense. “I ask for your validation that my actions were just. Should I have been less forceful on Groudon and Kyogre?”
Mew took a few moments’ hesitation before answering. “If you believe that it was just, then I must as well. It is in your power to punish those two if you deem it necessary. Do not feel that you have to ask for my approval.”
“I understand,” Rayquaza sighed in relief. “Thank you, Master Mew.” Relieved of its guilt, Rayquaza flew back to its home region.
“Listen to me, Mew,” Dialga stated after Rayquaza’s shape had reduced to a barely visible speck on the horizon. “Do you believe that this world is safe with those pathetic new creatures? They are much lower beings than those like you and I, Mew. They do not deserve to join our ranks and stand beside us! We are worth more than that!!”
Mew simply smiled and shook its head. “You do not understand their creation to one fraction, Dialga.” Dialga gave a slight laugh, but continued to listen. “Manaphy, Shaymin, Celebi, and Jirachi are not supposed to be as powerful as you and I, as you put it. If I had created new overseers of land and sea that were just as powerful as the elements’ former guardians, do you think we would be in any different a situation that before the fight between Groudon and Kyogre? Reducing the guardians’ powers keeps them from confronting one another! Otherwise, this glorious world would be but dust floating in orbit!” Again, Mew shook its head in disappointment. “Our legendary statuses are not based solely on power, Dialga.” The other Pokémon looked at Mew with a raised eyebrow. “They are also determined by our minds; we have to be caring and considerate of our fellow Pokémon without being completely spineless. This gives us the ability to have control over the lesser Pokémon that will be created in the future, but not so much control that we are feared and revolted against.” Dialga stammered in embarrassment.
“I know what your questionable manner is about, Dialga; you do not conceal your feelings well. I can tell that you feel demoralized because of Celebi’s arrival. But keep in mind that it is exactly as I said: Celebi is only here to control the time of our earth. You, Dialga, are higher in the hierarchy than Celebi; it is your responsibility to control all of time, not just that of our home. This is both a blessing and a burden, as I am certain we will all soon discover of our individual powers. A storm is brewing, Dialga, and I fear the tempest will trouble us all. Arceus will not stay asleep forever, and if the world isn’t as the Lord wants it when it awakes, then I fear the worst.”
Dialga nodded, finally understanding. “Your words speak to me, Mew, and they make sense. I will keep your warning in mind and do my best to halt its occurrence.” Dialga roared, opening a rift in time, and jumped inside it, transporting back to the Edge.
“Believe me, Dialga,” Mew whispered to itself, “that storm will not be stoppable if it does arrive. These new Pokémon may be our only backup against Arceus if it deems us useless once the time is right for Arceus’s second coming. All we can do is hope for the best, but brace for the worst.”

After the first meeting called by Mew, the other Pokémon adjusted well to their new companions. Manaphy spread its Phione offspring into the seas across the planet, keeping guard over all bodies of water since its predecessor, Kyogre, had been imprisoned. However, even as the Pokémon completed their tasks, building the foundation for future generations of Pokémon, they all noticed the dark masses of clouds building overhead. Eventually, the storms came without end. Thunder crashed and lighting shone like a second sun. The Pokémon could not work in these conditions… A few of the Pokémon, sensing the danger, persuaded Mew to call another emergency meeting.
Chapter 4—Weathering the Storm
Once again, the legendary Pokémon all gathered at the foot of Mt. Coronet, just below where their lord, Arceus, slept peacefully. In wait for the meeting to begin, the Pokémon conserved worriedly with one another.
“Those storms… They’re relentless!” Azelf said.
“There was a bolt of lightning that hit the water yesterday… A lot of us got shocked. It hurt!” one of the Phione chimed in.
“I knew this would happen…” Rayquaza grumbled. “Mew!” it called out. “What are you and Lord Arceus going to do to fix this calamity?”
“We need the High Lord’s holy assistance!” boomed Regigigas.
“Everyone, please be quiet!” Mew announced. The crowd immediately fell silent. “Now, many of you have either approached me or told someone else that these storms worry you…”
”Yes, Mew, sir!” Heatran gruffly said.
“We need Lord Arceus’s assistance!” Regigigas repeated.
“I understand your concern,” Mew replied. “You may rejoice, for your Lord Arceus has provided us with a solution!” The other Pokémon cheered and applauded. “I have two new creations—Lugia and Ho-oh.” Two bird Pokémon flew to each side of Mew. “First, on my left, is Lugia. This Pokémon will help Manaphy and the Phione to guard the seas, but it will also control our planet’s moon, as well as storms in the sea itself.” Lugia screeched and flew off toward the moon. “The other Pokémon is Ho-oh, guardian of the sky next to Rayquaza, as well as controlling some of the storms as well as the earth’s sun.” Just as Lugia did, its counterpart let out a cry before proceeding to the sun above. The other Pokémon watched in awe as they flew in speeding circles around the sun and moon… A rainbow shone down from the sky to the ground, making a path from just beyond Mew to Lugia and Ho-oh up above. The rainbow receded a little before branching off into three arcs that soared around the earth. As they circled the planet, they took shape and color… After all three new Pokémon were created, they came to rest in front of Lugia and Ho-oh. The trio of new creations, along with their creators, flew gently back down to the group.
“So, I see you have new creations for us?” Mew inquired.
“Correct,” Ho-oh stated. “These Pokémon will serve as our assistants as we fulfill our duties for our High Lord.”
“This trio of birds will control the storms as we try to remove them from our planet,” added Lugia. “Ho-oh and I have created Articuno of the ice, Zapdos of the lightning, and Moltres of the flames. Articuno will control snowfall and blizzards. Zapdos is the controller of thunderstorms, and Moltres will guard the temperature of the earth. Along with our control over the sun and the moon, we will remove these horrible tempests from our planet!” The Pokémon cheered and smiled happily.
“Thank you, everyone,” Mew finished. “You are dismissed.” The Pokémon slowly returned to their homes; Mew watched them all depart before floating to Mt. Coronet’s peak. Arceus was just above Mew, but Mew could not climb the stairway originally used by Arceus until the Azure Flute was played. Mew closed its eyes and concentrated…
“Mew.”
“Lord Arceus? Is that you?”
“It is, my friend.”
“Lugia and Ho-oh are created, and I believe they are completing your other task of removing the storms that plague our earth.”
“Good, good…”
A pause followed as Arceus retreated into its thoughts. Finally, it spoke:
“I believe now is the time, Mew. The hour of inhabitation has come. You must continue to create Pokémon.”
“But, my Lord, I am unsure of what else these Pokémon could control. They’re not needed…”
“Who says that they must be powerful?” Arceus questioned. “All that these Pokémon will be are inhabitants of our planet. We shall use them to create our world, but without the possible imbalance of power offered by Pokémon with superior powers like our recent creations.”
“Ah, yes, I understand,” replied Mew. “Excuse me for questioning your decisions. Do you have any ideas on these new Pokémon?”
“Yes…” Another pause… “W-w-wait… Who are you?”
“It’s, uh, me, my Lord…” Mew replied in confusion.
“No,” Arceus muttered. “Your hand… It is as black as the shadows themselves… And those light blue eyes, shining like Lugia’s new moon!”
The new moon? Mew thought. Ah, now I understand! This must be a new creation! Mew listened in, and as Arceus continued, a Pokémon was created of the new moon.
“Do not touch me!” Arceus yelled, and Mew flinched from the sudden boost in volume.
“Sir,” Mew asked carefully, “is everything all right?” Arceus did not reply. “My Lord must be in…a dream…”
“I…am…your…end…” a dark voice boomed. Mew began to worry; that voice certainly did not belong to its Lord!
“My Lord, wake up!” Mew yelled. Still, there was no response…
“I have already been awakened!” the second voice replied, evil laced into its voice. “That’s right, Mew… I am your new lord!” Upon the evil Pokémon’s last word, the new moon shone with amazing intensity. Mew spun around, squinting its eyes. Below, the other Pokémon cried out in surprise.
“Wait…” Mew started. A silhouette blocked out a lot of the moon. “That is not one of my Lord’s creations!”
“Oh, how little you know…” the voice interjected. The silhouette disappeared just as quickly as it had appeared. Suddenly, it reappeared…right in front of Mew. An inky black hand grasped Mew’s throat, lifting it in the air…
“Mew…” the raspy, evil voice boomed. “I am not a creation of your lord’s dream, as you thought… I am of its nightmares!”
“Who…are…you?” Mew struggled. The Pokémon cackled evilly.
“I…am…Darkrai!” Darkrai cackled once more, released Mew, and retreated to the moon. The clouds darkened again, covering the earth with dark shadows. Mew struggled to its feet.
“Oh, no…” Mew gasped. “What is this nightmarish Pokémon doing?”
Darkrai’s cackle could be heard from all over the world. “This…world…is…mine!!!”
Trombones13
08-25-2008, 09:49 PM
“This…world…is…mine!”
Darkrai’s cackle sounded like a never-ending echo of rumbling thunder in the ears of Rayquaza. The skies grew black, and Rayquaza sighed. “I knew this day would come… Evil is here, and our Lord isn’t around to stop it…”
Chapter 5—New Moon Nightmare
Back on Mt. Coronet, Mew was creating new Pokémon—the first wave of the lesser beings. “I know what I will do… I shall let the earth do the creating!”
Mew began to shine with a bright white outline. It flew to the bubbling peak and let out a cry. All of a sudden, numerous arcs of light branched out from Mew’s body, splashing violently into the seas. The water was calm for a moment, then, white spheres appeared where, moments before, the arcs had ended. New Pokémon were created, such as the rocky Relicanth and the cheerful Wailmer. Out of the lava, a dog Pokémon named Growlithe was created. Other creations included Aerodactyl, Omanyte, Kabuto, Lileep, Anorith, Shieldon, and Cranidos. These Pokémon continued to evolve and reproduce, and before long, there were more of these Pokémon than the original group of more powerful, or Legendary, Pokémon.
As time passed, with the dark clouds still hanging overhead, many of the new Pokémon began their migration from sea to land. They began to fill shorelines, caves, and several other places. A lot also took to the sea floor; some attached suction cups and kept firmly in place for long periods of time.
Days passed with little activity… But then, without warning, the storms began to threaten the world once more.
The day was ending, and Mew was meditating quietly on Mt. Coronet. Mew opened its eyes to look out upon the world. Everything seemed normal…
Suddenly, Mew spotted Lugia flying hurriedly toward the mountain. It stood up, watching the other Pokémon’s approach.
“Mew, sir!” Lugia panted upon its arrival.
“What is it?”
“The moon… D-d-d-Darkrai…”
“What?”
Lugia sighed and took a deep breath. “I was up on the moon moving the tides of the sea, and this…Pokémon…attacked me! It said its name was Darkrai, and it was my lord or something! What should I do? The storms came back!”
I don’t understand… Mew thought to itself. Darkrai has been missing for about thirty solar cycles… What would make it suddenly come back? Mew thought of the terms of both appearances. The common factor… The moon!
“What stage is the moon in right now?” Mew asked Lugia.
“It is known as the new moon,” Lugia replied. “Only a bit of the moon can be seen by us during this time.”
“Exactly…” Mew thought aloud.
“Excuse me, sir, but why is the stage of the moon important to Darkrai’s appearance?”
“It’s the only thing that is important, Lugia,” Mew stated. Lugia gave Mew a look of confusion, and Mew sighed. “Darkrai must be powered by the new moon; it needs darkness to be powerful!”
“You’ve figured it out, Mew. I guess you’re smarter than you seem… No matter.”
“Who was that?” Lugia asked Mew with caution. Mew looked at Lugia with wary eyes…
“Darkrai.”
“That’s right!” Darkrai’s evil voice cackled again. “And you can do nothing to stop me, Mew!”
Rayquaza zoomed in, landing alongside Mew. “It’s…a catastrophe, Mew!” it grunted.
Regigigas stood at the foot of the mountain. Mew, Lugia, and Rayquaza glided down to meet it. “Mew, something is going on! The earth is shaking, and I have done nothing to move it in several solar cycles…”
Before long, all of the other Pokémon were gathered at Mt. Coronet. They all were yelling at Mew, trying to get answers and solutions. Mew’s head began to pound as it grew frustrated. What do I do?
One of the first Pokémon of the latest group, an Arcanine, spoke up. “Excuse me, sir, but I believe I may have a solution…”
The other Pokémon began to laugh uproariously.
“Does that Pokémon think he can be of any use to us?”
“He is just an Arcanine, a lesser being!”
“You must be joking…”
“Everyone, please, be quiet!” Mew commanded. The group grew reverently silent. “Arcanine, your idea?”
“Yes; thank you, sir,” Arcanine bowed. “Now, I was thinking: Darkrai’s power grows using the new moon. During other moon phases, it is nowhere to be seen.”
That Arcanine knew that before we did? Lugia thought. Hmm…
“Very good,” Mew acknowledged Arcanine. “Continue…”
“Certainly. I believe that all we have to is…er…change the moon phase.”
The Pokémon laughed once more.
“How would we do that?”
“You lesser beings are insane creatures!”
“Why don’t we just rid ourselves of them now? They are pointless creations!”
“Quiet down!” Lugia bellowed. It shot an Aeroblast into the sky, and everyone immediately ceased talking. “Thank you.
“Now, I believe that Arcanine’s idea could work!” The Pokémon laughed again. “Please listen! During the new moon phase, the moon is in between the earth and the sun. But all we have to do is move the earth between the sun and the moon, and we will have the full moon! Then, Darkrai will be powerless!”
The other Pokémon stood with gaping mouths and wide eyes.
“Arcanine,” Mew called out, “if this works, you shall be revered as a legend!” The Arcanine beamed proudly. “Darkrai, your power shall be gone!”

On the surface of the moon, Darkrai watched the scene on the earth below. “They think that they can stop me by moving the earth?!” It cackled evilly. “Oh, wow… I might as well watch this plan fail miserably before I give them unending nightmares…!” Darkrai cackled again and turned its attention to Mew and the other Pokémon.
Chapter 6—A Dark Plan
“Take your positions as we discussed!” Mew yelled out. Regigigas jumped into the bubbling pit of Mt. Coronet, and some of the lava was displaced onto the mountainside.
“I’m ready!” it called to Mew after a few moments.
“All right, then! Lugia, Ho-oh, we need you at the sun and the moon!” Lugia and Ho-oh flew off to their respective positions.
“Incoming!” Darkrai cackled before disappearing into one of the shadows in a crater.
“Good,” Mew said. “Now, everyone, get into a safe place! This should get a little shaky…! Now!”
On Mew’s cue, Regigigas jumped into the air, holding ropes of earth in its hands. Upon entering thinner air, it pulled the ropes taut and proceeded to drag the earth out of orbit. “Now!” it yelled.
“Giratina, Palkia!”
“Shadow Force!” Giratina yelled. Between the moon and the sun, a dimensional rend appeared. “Palkia, your turn!”
“Right!” Palkia grunted. “Spacial Rend!” A purple aura surrounded the earth.
“Hang on!” Mew yelled to the other Pokémon. “Here it comes…!”
Suddenly, everything was spinning. “Whoa!!!” the Pokémon yelled.
On the moon, Darkrai was flabbergasted. “What the—? How did I forget about Giratina and Palkia?! Agh!” It screamed in frustration. “No matter. I’ll just have to improvise!” Darkrai jumped out of the crater, attacking Lugia.
“Hey! What are you doing?!” Lugia cried out.
“I’m taking this world for myself…” Darkrai cackled.
“Mew! It’s Dar—!” Lugia tried to yell, but was cut short by Darkrai’s inky hand, which covered its mouth.
“Lugia, you are mine!” Darkrai cackled. Lugia began to shudder and yell as Darkrai infiltrated Lugia’s soul. “And now, I present to you, Shadow Lugia!”
Lugia’s cries turned into evil shrieks as its normally white skin turned to a midnight blue. “Good… This will do nicely…” Darkrai laughed.
“When—is—this—going—to—stop?!” Rayquaza yelled out.
“We’re almost there…!” Mew yelled, sounding a bit queasy.
“Ready, Palkia?” Giratina grunted with effort.
“Let’s slow it down first; otherwise, it might be a bit of a rough landing for the other Pokémon!” Palkia replied. It began to open the rend, slowly enough that the friction from the two dimensions slowed the earth’s revolution. With a little tugging from Regigigas, the earth was safely placed between the sun and the moon. The job was finished, and the Pokémon cheered.
“Thank goodness that problem is solved!” Rayquaza sighed.
“Agreed…” Mew trailed off. “Uh, Lugia?”
Shadow Lugia flew down toward Mew and Rayquaza. “Yes?” its dark voice asked.
“Is…everything all right?” Mew asked.
“Oh, everything’s wonderful!!” Its voice rose throughout the sentence, ending with a shrieking cackle.
“Oh, no…” Mew gasped. Shadow Lugia fell in a heap, and a familiar figure appeared…
Darkrai.
“You thought you could stop me with that?! Fools! Now, sleep!” Darkrai’s blue eyes shone with intensity, staring straight at Mew and Rayquaza.
“I’m…feeling…sleepy…” Rayquaza groaned. The two Pokémon collapsed to the ground, relaxing into a deep slumber.
The sky grew dark. An explosion… The earth gave out from below Mew… Mew was falling…
Mew saw nothing but darkness as it continued to fall… Strange white wisps began to pass it… Then, an object like a jaw of red teeth morphed into a toothy smile… Mew fell between the jaws…
More darkness… Then, a pair of bright blue eyes…
“Wait,” Mew gasped. “This is not real! It’s…a nightmare!”
“Yes…” Darkrai’s evil voice laughed. “It is a nightmare. But realizing it will not wake you up… Sweet dreams…”

Mew sat shackled and panicking inside a tube filled with a watery substance. A shadow advanced, reducing its view…
A black hand reached out, touching Mew’s head…
Pain… Endless torture…
“Sweet dreams…” were the words uttered by a dark voice, accompanied by a wicked cackle…
Chapter 7—Silver Linings
Giratina, Regigigas, and Ho-oh advanced to the summit of Mt. Coronet, where Shadow Lugia was in a crumpled heap, and Mew and Rayquaza were under the effects of Darkrai’s attack.
“What happened?” boomed Regigigas.
Giratina knelt down to feel for a pulse on each of the three. “They’re all breathing just fine,” it reported, “but Mew’s and Rayquaza’s are very frantic, while Lugia’s is much calmer.”
“Wh-what’s with Lugia?” Ho-oh asked warily.
“I saw it all,” Regigigas talked loudly, but with an unusual reservedness. “I am uncertain as to Lugia’s anomaly, but it flew very quickly back down from the moon. It was talking to Mew before I even came back down to the ground after dragging the earth.
“Mew asked it if everything was okay, and I heard it cackle before falling down like how you see it now. I am quite certain that Darkrai is the culprit behind these attacks… The future is grave for us.”
“Well, what do we do?” asked Ho-oh.
“Honestly,” replied Giratina, “I don’t have a clue…”
“I believe that our best bet is to wait it out,” Regigigas decided after a moment’s hesitation, “but in the meantime, gather the other Pokémon out of hiding and into battle positions. If Darkrai comes back, we have to be ready to fight back with everything we have. If we don’t, all of us may face the same fate as Masters Mew and Rayquaza…”
“Right,” Ho-oh nodded. “Let’s do it!”
A blazing ring of blue-white fire encircled Mew and Rayquaza, both still in the nightmare state.
“Rayquaza,” Mew panted, dripping with sweat, “I don’t know what to do!”
“Calm down,” Rayquaza ordered. “You cannot think straight if your emotions get the best of you. Now, listen to me. What has helped you make all of your previous decisions? What have you turned to in the other times of need? What was the deciding factor with all of your orders? Think.”
“High Lord Arceus…” Mew whispered in realization.
“Exactly!” Rayquaza yelled as the flames began to lick their torsos.
“So, all I have to do is contact the High Lord, and I can figure out how to solve the problem!”
“Good, good…” Rayquaza sighed as heat exhaustion began to take over. “I…can’t…take any more…of this…” It collapsed, and flames fully covered its body.
“Rayquaza!” Mew yelled as the nightmare changed scenery once again, this time to a snow-peaked mountain. It closed its eyes and began to violently shudder. “So…cold… I have to concentrate, for Rayquaza—no, for the sake of my fellow Pokémon’s existence. High Lord Arceus, I seek your aid…!”
“Mew.”
Mew opened its eyes, hearing a familiar voice—the voice of its savior.
“Lord Arceus! Thank goodness you have arrived! I need you to—”
“Quiet, my child,” Arceus calmly said. “You need me to do nothing.”
Mew looked up, its face filled with confusion. “What do you mean, my Lord? Where are you?”
“Mew,” Arceus stated, “you must know by now that I am the all-powerful being! I am omniscient, omnipresent, and omnipotent! I am everywhere…and nowhere at the same time! It is an unimportant matter where I am, but rather where I am not—on the planet I created. Yes, my body lies there, but my spirit travels with you, Mew! It is your responsibility to take the reins until I am reawakened!”
“Re…awakened?” Mew asked.
“You will know when it is time…” Arceus said.
“But…Darkrai, my Lord! What do I do?”
“I do not know, Mew… You created it…”
“I did no such thing! It was…” A starting realization swept over Mew. “…It was your nightmare! I mistook it for a new creation, and that was when Darkrai was created! So, all I need is a new Pokémon to counter Darkrai’s nightmares… The Pokémon of good dreams!”
“What did I tell you my child?” asked a satisfied Arceus. “Like I said, you do not require my help any longer. The time has come for me to return to your world. I shall be waiting for you, Mew…”
As Arceus’ voice faded, an image of a new Pokémon flooded Mew’s mind; the Pokémon of the full moon.
“Cresselia.”
“Everyone,” Giratina yelled, “we are under a state of emergency!”
Cries rang out all along the land. All of the Pokémon were gathered at Mt. Coronet for the third time in mere days.
“Quiet!” yelled Regigigas. “Please continue, Giratina.”
“Right,” Giratina said. “Now, please, you must keep your emotions in check! We need strong minds to combat Darkrai!”
Voices continued to chatter. “Darkrai?” “Is that the Pokémon from the new moon?” “Where is Master Mew?”
“I said be quiet!!” Regigigas commanded. “Listen up! We have no interest in your pathetic concerns! Keeping Darkrai away until Mew recovers is our main point of interest here, not you!”
“‘Until Mew recovers?’”
“What’s wrong with Mew?!”
“Wonderful…” muttered Giratina. “Regigigas, I was planning on keeping that private…”
“Why?” Regigigas challenged. “The public deserves to know!”
“I agree with you…” Giratina waved a claw over the crowd below. “…But that is precisely what we don’t want to happen.” Regigigas looked abashed and stepped back, letting Giratina take control.
“Please listen!” Giratina yelled over the crowd’s noise. “We must—”
“You must what?” a voice drawled. “Pretend that you have any chance against me? Ha!”
“Oh, :(:(:(:(…” Giratina whispered…
“Halt!”
Darkrai, appearing above the crowd, just a few meters from where Giratina stood on the peak, spun around to face the source of the new voice.
“Who are you?” Darkrai asked, with ever the slightest tint of fear edged into its voice.
“My name is Cresselia,” the new Pokémon said, “but you may know me as…your undoing!”
Cresselia charged toward Darkrai, attacking with a Psycho Cut. Darkrai crashed against the side of the mountain and slid down the rock face before recovering; the crowd of Pokémon below screamed and cheered as the battle went on.
“You shall not succeed!” Cresselia yelled before sending another attacking in Darkrai’s direction.
“Oh, how wrong you are!” Darkrai retorted, disappearing into a shadow and rematerializing in Cresselia’s own shadow. “How shall you attack your own shadow?” it cackled. “You cannot even see me, as I am behind you!”
Cresselia turned around, the sun now at her backside.
“Do you really think I am that naďve?” she laughed.
“You’re kidding me…” Giratina gasped in shock. “Why would Darkrai make such a stupid mistake?”
“Yes, I do!” Darkrai laughed as Cresselia watched her shadow morph into a silhouette with Darkrai, everything black apart from its two bright blue eyes, which shone clear as day.
“Your eyes…” Cresselia struggled, “they seem so…innocent, and yet…they are filled with such hatred and evil…!”
“Face the Blue-Eyed Stare!” Darkrai laughed evilly. “Feel the torture of the nightmares I have induced, the nightmares that will devour your very soul to its core!”
“Come on, Cresselia!” Giratina yelled. “Break free of it! Break free!”
Break free… the voice echoed in the back of Cresselia’s mind. Break free…
“Break free…!” Cresselia yelled, releasing herself from Darkrai’s grip. The crowd cheered, and Giratina let out a sigh of relief.
“But it’s not over yet…” Giratina reminded itself.
Cresselia glided down to the foot of the mountain, closing its eyes to concentrate. “What are you doing?!” Darkrai demanded from her shadow.
“‘I shall rest, until the Azure Flute plays, notifying me that I am needed once more!’” Cresselia yelled so everyone could hear. “These were the words of our High Lord Arceus, just before it laid itself to rest above Mt. Coronet!”
“H-h-how do you know that?” Darkrai stammered.
“I am of the High Lord’s dreams, Darkrai. I knew its every thought, because it conveyed them to me through dreams! All that you received were its nightmarish concepts of the planet in future times, but not its fond memories of the once peaceful world it originally created!” She looked at a portion of the ground, and it began to glow in a light blue hue. The earth began to flow away with the wind as she continued to dig…
After a moment, she bent down, turning back a moment later with an object in her paw. “This is the time of our High Lord!” she bellowed. “Darkrai, your time is up!” She put the object to her lips and issued the most beautiful melody the world had ever known…
The Azure Flute had played.
“Awaken, High Lord Arceus!”

A beautiful melody was carried on the wind throughout the whole universe… Mew and Rayquaza woke up, as if the song had cured them of their nightmares.
Mew stood up. “Wh—what’s going on?” Its eyes focused on Darkrai and Cresselia. “It worked; Cresselia’s here!”
Cresselia’s voice echoed in Mew’s head: “Awaken, High Lord Arceus!”
“Awaken… Lord Arceus returns!”
Chapter 8—The Second Coming
“No…!” Darkrai yelled in frustration. “I won’t let you wake, Arceus! I shall rule!”
“You are wrong, Darkrai!” Mew shouted, and Darkrai spun around.
“Not you…!”
“That’s right!” Rayquaza roared angrily. “How dare you afflict us with such horrible nightmares!”
“Oh, whatever!” Darkrai jeered. “Now, stand back and watch as your plan is foiled!”
“Foiled? Somehow, I doubt that.”
“Cresselia!”
Cresselia smirked and flew up to the base of Mt. Coronet, the Azure Flute around her neck. “Now, the pieces fall into place! I have played the Azure Flute, and the High Lord shall return!” The other Pokémon below cheered, but Darkrai rocketed up behind her.
“Not so fast…!”
“Too late!” Cresselia put the flute to her lips and played the melody again. The sky seemed to tremble, as if a rift was opening in front of her.
“Stop now!”
A winding golden staircase appeared in front of Cresselia. “Try and stop me, Darkrai! It does not matter; Arceus is waking!” She floated up the stairs, Darkrai in hot pursuit.
“Let’s go, Mew!” Rayquaza yelled. “Giratina, Regigigas, Ho-oh, come on!” The other Pokémon followed, Mew and Rayquaza at the lead.
The earth shook as Cresselia wound up the stairs with Darkrai close behind and the others at the foot of the stairs. “Groudon! Kyogre!” Rayquaza yelled. “They’ll be released from their bonds! Mew, go on ahead! I’ll catch up!” Rayquaza moved at high speed, racing toward the areas where Kyogre and Groudon were imprisoned.
Mew hesitated.
“Mew, go!” Ho-oh cried. “You know High Lord Arceus would want to see you! Go!!”
“All right,” Mew sighed. “See you all soon…” Mew floated up the stairs as they began to disappear, blocking entry for anyone else.
This is it… Mew thought. I will soon see my lord…
“Dark Pulse!”
A sphere of dark energy zoomed past Cresselia. “Sorry; your aim is a little off, Darkrai!” She continued advancing up the stairs.
“Psychic!” another voice called. Darkrai fell to one of the golden stairs below.
“Why you…”
“Mew!” Cresselia cried.
“Keep moving!” Mew replied. “I’ll try and hold off Darkrai!”
“All right!” Cresselia yelled back, not stopping. “Good luck…” she whispered to herself.
Darkrai cackled. “What, you—you think that you can possibly defeat me in battle?! Ha!”
“Enough, Darkrai!” Mew said. “Transform!” Mew began to glow, and its body elongated and turned green. “Rrrayquazaaa!” Mew grunted once the transformation was complete.
“So what?” Darkrai shouted. “You cannot defeat me, regardless of what you do!” It turned around and continued up the stairs.
“Stop!” Mew, in Rayquaza’s voice, yelled. “Extremespeed!” Mew zoomed up, passing Darkrai and stopping in front of it. “Hyper Beam!!” A ray of yellow light shot out, striking Darkrai and sending it back several stairs.
“This is not over! Dark Pulse!”
The sphere struck Mew head on, and it returned to its normal state. “Now what will you do?” Darkrai laughed.
A light shone from up ahead. Mew laughed in jubilance. “You’re too late!”
“No…” Darkrai gasped, fear finally overcoming it. “No!” It shoved past Mew, reaching the landing at the top of the stairs. A long hall followed it.
Up ahead, the familiar melody was heard again. “That wretched song…” Darkrai spat.
“It’s working…!” Cresselia gasped. In front of her, the resting figure of Arceus began to move ever so slightly.
“I’m…too late!” Darkrai groaned upon entering the Hall of Origin, seeing Arceus moving.
“That’s right!” Mew said, arriving just behind Darkrai. The final set of stairs disappeared behind it, leaving nothing beyond the hall but a never-ending sea of darkness. Mew bent down next to Arceus.
“High Lord?” it whispered. Arceus began to tremble, its colors fluctuating.
“It’s waking up!” Cresselia gasped.
Without opening its eyes, Arceus stood up. Its mouth opened.
“No…” Darkrai groaned once again.
“Cover your ears!” Cresselia yelled, and Mew obliged.
“What?” Darkrai asked in confusion.
“I… AM… AWAKE!!!” Arceus roared, sending the trio of Pokémon flying down into the black sea. Darkrai cried out in pain and anger.
“We did it!” Cresselia yelled happily.
We did… Mew thought to itself. And now, a new chapter of the lives of Pokémon begins… It smiled. The High Lord jumped into the air above the three Pokémon, and as Mew continued to fall, it felt a sense of safety not known since its conception. Welcome back, High Lord Arceus.

Arceus’s scream was heard all throughout the universe. Even without the knowledge of where the cry came from, the Pokémon cheered in jubilance. They all understood what had happened: Arceus had re-awakened.
Chapter 9—The Holy Court
Darkrai uttered a curse as it fell along with Cresselia and Mew. “My plan has failed… Arceus is awake again!”
Meanwhile, Cresselia looked down at the endless expanse of blackness. “Mew! We have to do something!”
But what? Mew thought. I have no powers… Wait! I must call upon the High Lord! Mew attempt to telepathically connect with Arceus. After a moment, Arceus responded to Mew.
Yes, my friend?
I need something to help us! Perhaps some sort of power?
Try this…
Cresselia gave a light cry as it felt its body begin to tingle. Mew and Darkrai began to experience the same feeling.
“Argh!” Darkrai grunted. “What is this?”
“We’re saving you,” Mew replied in an annoyed tone.
Darkrai appeared to be confused. “But…why would you…?”
“You are a Pokémon just like I am,” Mew said. “Even low-life scum deserves a second chance.” As Mew finished speaking, the three Pokémon were teleported to the foot of Mt. Coronet.
All throughout the land, voices filled with joy and excitement were carried in the air.
“What is all this noise?” Mew pondered aloud. Cresselia and Darkrai stood beside it.
Rayquaza, Giratina, and Regigigas appeared in front of Mew. “Arceus!” Giratina yelled. “He has been awakened from his slumber!”
Rayquaza noticed Darkrai looking around warily. “And why is this cretin still around?”
“Do not overstep your boundaries, pitiful creature!” Darkrai yelled gruffly before vanishing into the shadows.
Suddenly, Arceus’s bulky figure darted out of the lava of Mt. Coronet. “Attention, all Pokémon!” its booming voice announced. The Pokémon quickly quieted, turning their attention to the High Lord. “I am…reborn!” At this, the Pokémon began to cheer. Arceus let out a Hyper Beam that extended high into the horizon. “Silence!” it commanded. Again, the Pokémon obeyed.
“All Pokémon will now take order from me, and no other Pokémon! The only exception is if I have commanded it so!
“All Pokémon will do my bidding whenever I command it without hesitation!
“No Pokémon shall challenge my authority! If this occurs, I will not hesitate to smite the offender!
“I am assigning a group of skilled Pokémon to be my Holy Court. These Pokémon are listed as follows—”
Mew looked warily at Cresselia. “Something tells me that this will not end well…”
Arceus began to list names.
“Mew! Cresselia! Rayquaza! Giratina! Lugia! Ho-oh! Mesprit! Celebi! Heatran! Regigigas! And finally, Arcanine!”
The Holy Court joined Arceus, looking out at the rest of the crowd.
“These Pokémon are under my orders! They carry the same burden as you, but are granted privileges! These privileges are powers unlike those seen before. These attacks are created to purge my planet of evils that taint its soil.”
The Pokémon began to glow as their new powers were bestowed upon them.
“Congratulations to the members of the Holy Court. Now, all of you: be gone! Return to your tasks.” Arceus turned to the Holy Court of eleven, lowering its voice so only they could hear.
“I need your assistance. Lugia and Ho-oh, bring me the most delicious of berries off of the most fruitful tree on the planet! Heatran, increase the heat of Mt. Coronet. I am cold. Regigigas, build a tall rock face surrounding the mountain. And Giratina, close off all spatial vortexes excluding the one through which you travel. I want no unwelcomed visitors!” The Pokémon left without complaint. “The rest of you, depart immediately and oversee the other Pokémon!” The others turned, but Arceus stopped Mew and Cresselia. “Except for you two…”
Mew and Cresselia turned around and looked at one another in confusion.
“I just…wanted to…thank you for awakening me,” Arceus struggled to say. “However, please know that I do not feel as if I am in your debt. You are still under my command; do not forget this.”
“Of course, Master,” Mew bowed.
“Certainly. I completely understand,” added Cresselia.
“Good,” Arceus stated. “Thank you.” Hearing Arceus’s dismissive words, Cresselia and Mew flew off, staying high over the land.
“Why do you think Arceus is so…authoritative?” Cresselia asked Mew. “It’s almost rude…”
“I don’t know…” Mew reflected. “But I suppose that he has every right to… After all, we wouldn’t even be in existence without his abilities of creation…”
Cresselia mumbled in acceptance and stayed silent for the rest of the flight.
“Why was I not chosen? I deserve to be a part of the Holy Court as much as any of those other pathetic creatures…! The High Lord must underestimate me… I must prove my worth to him…”
Another voice spoke up, laced with malevolence. “You are displeased with the High Lord?”
“Who’s there?”
“My identity is not of importance. The matter at hand is this: you want to take down the High Lord, do you not?”
“Well, no… I just want to show him my power…”
“Take a moment to think about this. You are weak, pitiful, even… There isn’t a chance in this desolate world that you could possibly hope to impress the High Lord, Arceus… You need…assistance.”
“What do you mean?”
“All will be revealed…” The voice’s true evil rose into a wicked cackle. The other Pokémon began to cry out in pain. After a few moments, the first Pokémon grew silent.
“Now,” the evil voice laughed, “go forth, and destroy High Lord Arceus!”

As the sun rose, Rayquaza looked on the horizon. The shadow of Mt. Coronet filled the sky, and Arceus’s silhouette was visible at its lip. Other Pokémon were trudging up the side of the volcano, stopping before Arceus to bow.
“What is this?” Rayquaza wondered aloud. “Is power going to the High Lord’s head?”
Arceus let out a yell, and the Pokémon sped up. Rayquaza shook his head sadly.
Chapter 10—Benedict Arnold
Across the flat plains of the earth, a dark, booming roar echoed in the air.
“I see that you have awakened…” Darkrai’s voice said. A moment passed before another roar was heard.
“These powers…” the other Pokémon growled. “I feel…so strong…”
“Ah, you are strong, my child,” Darkrai said with a smile. “Go forth and prove your worth to the High Lord!”
“Most certainly, my Lord.” The Pokémon, enshrouded by shadows, sped off into the distance.
“Hasten!” Arceus commanded to the line of Pokémon streaming in front of him. “I must attend to other duties!” The line sped up even faster, bowing and giving good words to the High Lord.
Giratina appeared through a rift beside Arceus.
“High Lord, sir,” it said, “don’t you think that you may be extending your powers a bit too far? You must be cautious, for with every unnecessary command of yours creates unpleasant feelings amongst an average Pokémon. It would be most displeasing to face a revolt against one of our own, and it—”
“Silence!” Arceus grunted, cutting Giratina off. “Your position as a member of the Holy Court does not entitle you to give me commands, Giratina. Keep your thoughts in check.”
“…Yes, sir,” Giratina obeyed, watching Pokémon after Pokémon bow before the High Lord. A few moments later, the line ended.
“I shall make my way to the ocean to drink my fill. Will you join me, Giratina?”
“Regrettably, I cannot, sir. I must return to Dialga and Palkia and expand the universe.” Giratina disappeared into a rift, and Arceus jumped to the foot of the volcano, making his way toward the ocean. As he walked, a black shadow extended perpendicular to his path.
“What is this shadow?” he pondered aloud. Without warning, a dark figure dashed past where the shadow had just been seen, startling the High Lord.
“A…Pokémon, perhaps?” Looking off into the distance, nothing could be seen aside from a few rocks dotting the landscape. “It’s gone… No matter; what I don’t know shan’t hurt me.” Arceus continued toward the water’s edge. Upon arrival, it bent down, plentifully drinking from the water.
“Ah,” Arceus sighed contently, standing up straight. His muscles suddenly tensed as he felt the presence of another Pokémon behind him.
“Hello, Arceus…” a dark voice said. “Let me show you…my power!!”
Upon the dark Pokémon’s final word, it let out a deafening roar. Arceus yelled in recoil and slammed into the ocean’s surface. He spun around to face the Pokémon.
“What…?” Arceus gasped in wonder. “But—why did…you…?”
Arceus had no time to complete his thoughts; the shadowed Pokémon roared once more, plunging Arceus deep underwater.
Could it be…? Why would he betray us?
A voice penetrated Arceus’s mind:
…Because I have been reborn! I am akin to the shadows, and you too shall be darkened by them!
What is this?! Why have you chosen this path?!
A chuckle sounded before the voice spoke again. For being our lord, you have such little understanding… You know nothing about us—the other Pokémon; the rejects that you created merely to populate your pitiful world! Now, you shall know the names of the Others as we align with our High Lord—Darkrai! When your world is in ruin, remember the name that brought you down:
Arcanine!
Arcanine let out a burst of black flames, and Arceus cried out in pain. Arcanine exited the High Lord’s mind, and when Arceus looked around, the Pokémon was nowhere to be seen.
“Darkrai…” he seethed. “It seems we are on opposite sides, and you are building an attack force as an attempt to overthrow me… I see. The war begins…” Arceus brushed off its wounds and began to walk back toward Mt. Coronet.

Actually, I was originally thinking of it being someone different (this Pokemon will turn to the dark side soon enough, though), but I thought Arcanine worked better. After all, I have to explain why he's not a Legendary Pokemon anymore, right?
Thinking about my third fanfic, too; I have big plans--just hoping they're possible.

Arceus limped silently across the dry, open plains as night fell. A bright, crimson trail extended from his hind leg to the ground, leaving a streaking line behind him. He groaned softly as a wave of pain overcame him, but continued walking toward the peak of Mt. Coronet, visible just over the blackening horizon.
Chapter 11—Midnight Ambush
“Attention! This emergency meeting of the Holy Court is now in session!”
Giratina’s voice echoed throughout the mountain range. It had called the members of the Holy Court to a special assembly. All were present except for Arcanine, who was reported to be off on a special, “undisclosed” task.
“Where is the High Lord?” Cresselia asked. “Why are you leading this meeting, Giratina?”
“This is the very reason why I’ve assembled you,” Giratina sighed. “Our High Lord has been unseen since the offerings this morning. I fear the worst.”
“It is probably a petty matter that we should not be concerned with,” Ho-oh squawked. “Besides, who gave you the right to be second in command? I certainly—”
“I hardly think that it is a petty matter,” Regigigas interrupted. “Arceus is our High Lord, the ultimate being! How would you feel if you were in a life-threatening matter and no one came to save you, especially if you were in such a high position of power?” Ho-oh stammered and backed down, and Regigigas smiled, accepting victory.
“What is our plan of action?” asked Mew, attempting to revive the important subject at hand.
“We have to split up and find the High Lord,” Rayquaza said. “It’s the only way to locate him.”
“Agreed,” Lugia said. “But a few of us will have to stay here in case something happens!”
“I see nothing that would happen,” Heatran huffed, “but I shall stay here. This is my natural habitat as it is.” Lugia, Celebi, and Regigigas also agreed to stay, while the others departed in different directions, calling out for the High Lord.
The blanket of night fell over the land such that Arceus could not continue. “It is much too dark to walk on and know where I would be going…” he admitted aloud. “Furthermore, my injuries leave me weak and fatigued. I have little safe choice but to stop until sunrise.” The High Lord ceased walking and curled into a comfortable ball, conceding to sleep mere moments later.
“The darkness blinds even the best of us,” Heatran said. It stood on the lip of the volcano. “How do they plan on searching for the High Lord when they would barely be able to see each other mere inches away?”
“There is no need to search for your High Lord,” a rough voice called. Heatran looked toward the source of the voice, but could see nothing in the darkness.
“Exactly my point…” Heatran muttered. “Reveal yourself!” Heatran shot a Fire Blast into the air, providing light with which another Pokémon could be seen in the air. The figure slammed into Heatran, knocking it into the bubbling lava of Mt. Coronet.
“Blast…” Heatran grunted, shooting out of the lava and slamming into the flying Pokémon, who fell to the ground. It regained its footing and let out a shrieking cry.
“Aerodactyl?” Heatran remarked, now able to see the Pokémon next to the glowing lava.
“I am no longer an Aerodactyl,” it said. “I am a servant of the shadows now! I bow to my High Lord—Darkrai!”
“Darkrai…” Heatran whispered, as if saying the name aloud would release its evil upon the Pokémon that dared utter its name.
“I heard the splash of lava!” Lugia cried out. It stood with Regigigas and Celebi on the other side of the lip. “An Aerodactyl?”
“Darkrai got to it!” Heatran yelled. It made the mistake of turning toward Lugia while saying for it; it felt the consequences as Aerodactyl pushed it off its feet once more.
“Heatran!” Regigigas yelled and turned toward the attacker. “Why have you aligned yourself with that dark menace, Aerodactyl?”
“It matters not,” Aerodactyl growled, shooting a Hyper Beam toward Regigigas, which hit it square in the stomach. Regigigas tumbled down the rock face, unable to regain its footing.
“Stop!” Lugia ordered, but Aerodactyl did not listen. It flew toward Lugia, grabbed it, and tossed it into the air. Lugia managed to lock claws and wings with it, turning the confrontation into an epic match between winged beasts.
“Hyper Beam!”
“Aeroblast!”
The two attacks collided at the middle, and a cascade of light rained down to the ground.
“Shadow Beam!”
Lugia watched Aerodactyl in shock and awe as an ink-black jet of energy shot toward it. Before Lugia could react, the beam struck, and the Pokémon fell to the ground in defeat. Aerodactyl turned toward Heatran and Celebi, shooting another Hyper Beam.
“No!” Celebi cried out, surrounding the pair with a shield. The beam fizzled into nonexistence upon contact with the energy field.
“We have to end this!” Celebi yelled.
“But how?” Heatran replied, barely dodging another attack from Aerodactyl. Celebi’s eyes sparkled, and it smirked, formulating a plan.
“I’ve got it!” it announced. “Now…”
“Hyper Beam!”
“Hit it with an attack, Heatran!”
“Fire Blast!”
The Fire Blast ducked below the Hyper Beam, striking Aerodactyl’s legs and knocking it to the ground. Celebi flew upward in order to dodge the oncoming Hyper Beam. Before Aerodactyl could get to its feet, Celebi began to glow in a dazzlingly white color.
“Timeless Bond!” Celebi cried out.
Energy seemed to pour outward from the Pokémon, filling the night sky with white light.
“No! Wait!” Aerodactyl pleaded, but to no avail. The white light engulfed it and focused itself into a transparent orb. Aerodactyl was trapped inside, unable to do anything.
“You—you did it, Celebi!” Heatran cried out. Celebi smiled for a moment, but fell to the ground, feeling the repercussions from the powerful attack. Heatran took it into a cave, built a small fire for warmth, and sat watching the Pokémon all throughout the night. “You did good, kid. You did good.”

The way I portrayed Heatran, I imagine him as kind of the "gruff, older man" archetype. Celebi, Shaymin, Jirachi, and Manaphy are younger, more naive, and less powerful in my eyes (at least as the story goes). :-D
Whitdjinn
11-30-2008, 09:39 PM
Oh, definitely - I understood it and it fits perfectly, sometimes its hard to remember that the games aren't chronological in any way really, so in effect, all these legends have been around roughly the same amount of time, it is very possible that heatran has been around longer than celebi, especially as they're seen as off-shoots of mew or offspring even :)
Trombones13
11-30-2008, 09:49 PM
And also (just for the record), Heatran was produced in Chapter 1 with the original group--by Arceus. Celebi and the other three weren't produced until Chapter 4, if I'm not mistaken, and it was by Mew, which almost makes them seem on a lower level than legends like Heatran. :)

Heatran opened its eyes, seeing the dying embers of the fire and the dark, bare cave walls. Suddenly, the events from the previous night came back to it, and it looked over to where Celebi had been before it fell asleep. There was nothing but emptiness... Heatran glanced around the walls of the cave, but Celebi was nowhere to be found. It walked out to the cave’s entrance and heard voices up above on the peak of Mt. Coronet; Heatran followed the source of the noise and climbed to the top.
Chapter 12—The Great Protector
“What is this? It’s outrageous!”
“It may have saved us, but it is not worthy of…of this!”
Heatran reached the peak of Mt. Coronet, where several Pokémon were talking.
“Heatran! Did you hear what happened?” Mesprit asked.
Heatran, confused and tired, shook its head.
“Follow me!” Mesprit said as it floated down to the ground below. Heatran followed it. As it walked down, it could see a group of Pokémon standing in a cluster. Mesprit zoomed toward them.
“All praise High Lord Arceus! All praise the Great Protector! All praise High Lord Arceus! All praise the Great Protector!”
Heatran and Mesprit pushed through the crowd. Heatran could see Arceus standing in the middle of the group, bloodstained ground below it. On its left side, Celebi floated in midair.
“All praise High Lord Arceus! All praise the Great Protector!”
The entire group of Pokémon simultaneously chanted and bowed; Heatran and Mesprit joined them. Arceus and Celebi looked at the group with approval.
Once the Pokémon rose back up, Heatran pulled Arceus aside.
“My High Lord, what happened?”
“I was attacked…” the High Lord muttered.
“By whom?”
“A traitor.”
“A…traitor? Who was it, my Lord?”
“Arcanine.” Arceus spat the Pokémon’s name like it was poisonous if kept silent.
“But…why…?”
Arceus stammered, attempting to find a good response, but finding none.
“All praise High Lord Arceus!”
“Excuse me, Heatran. I must return to my duties.” Arceus pushed Heatran aside and returned to the center of the circle.
“All praise the Great Protector!”
“Heatran?” a voice called. Heatran looked over to see Dialga, its demeanor more irritated than usual.
“Good morning, Dialga,” Heatran replied. “What exactly has happened since the events of yesterday eve?”
“Arceus returned to Mt. Coronet, telling us that Arcanine betrayed him and attacked. He was badly injured and tired, so Cresselia and a few others healed him. Lugia found Celebi a little later; it appeared to have been sleepwalking, because when it awoke, it could not remember why it was there.”
“Celebi was with me last night! After it used its Arceus-given attack, it fainted and I took it into a cave, where we rested. When I woke up this morning, Celebi was gone!”
“Hmm…” Dialga thought. “But then, why was Celebi somewhere else? According to Lugia, it was in full fighting condition…”
“It must be something else Arceus gave to it… I think I need some time to think…” Heatran sighed and walked off, leaving Dialga alone.
“Why, Arceus?” Dialga thought aloud. “What gives you the right to let your power control you? What makes your mind think it is acceptable to do so? You are merely allowing the other Pokémon to mindlessly follow you! And why is Celebi being called the Great Protector? There have been many Pokémon who have risked much more to fight for a peaceful new world…”
“You seem…unhappy with the present situation,” a voice said. Dialga looked around warily; it had no visible source.
“Do not question my words; you need not fear me…for I am fear itself.”
Dialga glanced around for a moment and ran quickly away, hoping that it could outrun whoever was talking to it. After several moments’ frenzied sprinting, Dialga slowed to a stop, panting wearily.
“You cannot escape me…” the voice said.
“Wh—who are you?” Dialga asked aloud?
“I have already told you… I am the personification of fear… Let me speak to you. No… Let me show you how different this world could be with my guidance! The power bestowed upon that most hated Celebi shall be removed!”
“Hated? I don’t…hate Celebi…”
“Really? Don’t you? Think about it; you have disliked it since the very moment it was created, and your opinion toward it has never swayed…”
Dialga sighed with surprise and fear. “You…are right… All right; I accept your terms. Give me power!”
The voice cackled, and a dark hand appeared in front of Dialga. Dialga watched the hand as it sank into its chest, making its diamond shimmer brightly. For a moment, everything went numb…and then…nothing but darkness and pain…
Dialga let out a cry; it fell on deaf ears.
“No one can hear you now,” the voice said. “You live in the shadows now. Watch what wonders await you under their rule…”
Dialga shot out a black orb from its mouth; it slammed into the ground, causing a series of dark cracks to extend from the point of impact.
“Believe me, there is much more to be seen with these new powers… Worship your new ruler—Dark Lord Darkrai!”
Dialga smirked with satisfaction.
“All praise Dark Lord Darkrai…” Dialga walked behind the shade of Mt. Coronet, completely immersing itself into the darkness.

Arceus awoke after a peaceful night of sleep. Upon waking and seeing the sunrise, he felt a tremendous amount of relief knowing that he was finally able to get through a night without an attack. Looking up at the sky, the orangey horizon seemed to be tainted with black streaks…
“I’m just seeing things,” Arceus murmured. He ignored the sight and continued with his daily rituals, climbing to the top of the mountain to receive breakfast offerings.
Chapter 13—First Blood
“Next!”
A shadow moved in front of Arceus, blocking the morning sunlight that shone through his closed eyelids. Arceus opened his mouth immediately, feeling an object drop inside. He swallowed it without chewing.
”Next!”
The line dragged on as Arceus sat calmly, enjoying his breakfast gifts. So it’s abuse of power… he thought. Who could possibly stop me?
“Next!”
A large shadow blocked all light. Startled, Arceus opened his eyes. Dialga stood in front of him.
“Good morning, High Lord Arceus,” Dialga grunted. “Nice weather we’re having…” Dialga tossed a handful of foodstuffs into Arceus’s mouth and turned to walk away, watching the overlord chew his food.
“Move along,” Arceus ordered. “Next!”
Dialga began to walk down the path. Arceus closed his eyes again, keeping him from noticing the Legendary Pokémon turning around. Suddenly, Arceus was airborne and alert. It looked at the surface at the mountain; Dialga stood glaring at him.
“Another traitor… Receive your…punishment!”
A white light surrounded Arceus, and it flew down straight into Dialga, who fell off the side of Mt. Coronet. Arceus ricocheted back onto the surface, forcing the feeding Pokémon to scramble away. Dialga scrabbled back up the rocky wall, releasing a mighty roar toward the Holy One. Its fur blew back, but it stood steadfast.
“Dialga! Wake up; release yourself from these menacing shadows that control you!”
“The shadows are my guide, not my overlord. I believe that position once belonged to you, sir. Feeding you as if I respected you…” Dialga spat angrily on the ground, leaving jet-black stains on the dirt.
“Return to the side of light, Dialga!”
“Never.”
Another attack—this time, a dark orb flew toward Arceus. It retaliated with its own beam. The two attacks collided, sending both Pokémon backward.
“Stop this!” a voice yelled—Giratina had just appeared out of a void. Dialga grunted, shooting another beam toward its foes. Giratina took the hit and fell low to the ground.
“Giratina!” Arceus cried. He looked over at the fallen comrade, but before he could attack Dialga again, the Pokémon gave another cry. This time, sound waves could be seen as they approached Arceus.
“Holy Court! Assemble!” he yelled as he fell to the ground, feeling aged by the Roar of Time.
Suddenly, several members of the Holy Court appeared, protecting the High Lord from all sides.
“Dialga?!” Lugia cried out upon sight of the assailant. “But…why?”
“You all are foolish!” Dialga yelled, actually making Jirachi and Celebi fly backward. “Do you even know who I am?!”
“You are Dialga, guardian of time…” suggested Rayquaza.
“Wrong!” Dialga countered. “Do you recall what Mew said that day? It said that I was the universal time guardian, while that creature,” it spat, leering at Celebi, “controlled the time flow on Earth.”
“What’s your point?” asked Ho-oh, moving in front of Celebi as if to protect it.
“Don’t you see? You’re all so pathetic…” Dialga sighed before continuing. “There is nothing out there. Trust me; I’ve seen it—nothing. Palkia, Giratina, and I have traveled the expanses of the universe, to where the stars don’t even shine, and there is absolutely nothing but darkness. In fact, all of that darkness inspired me to take action against the so-called side of “light”. You all bend to Arceus’ will simply because he’s fed you lies. Lies that make you believe he’s your ultimate creator. Where is his proof? There is none! For all you know, I could be the High Lord!!”
“Stop right there, Dialga!” Rayquaza yelled. “The High Lord has been extremely faithful and assisting to us. How could you betray him? How could you betray us, your friends? And most importantly, how could you betray yourself? High Lord Arceus entrusted you with amazing power. You’re lucky to even have that!”
“Silence!” Dialga ordered, roaring once more. “I have had enough of this!!” The Pokémon disappeared momentarily, leaving nothing but a shadow on the rocky cliff face. Then, it re-appeared with a blinding flash and a dark hue.
“Shadows!! Guide me!! Guide them, and help them to end their suffering!!”
Dialga’s face contorted into a wicked smirk. Numerous arcs of raw shadow force came crashing into Mt. Coronet and the Pokémon on it. Several of them fell to the ground.
“Dialga, no!” Heatran yelled. “You’ll cause the volcano to erupt!”
Dialga’s eyes shone evilly as it jumped up over the pit of lava. “Rise!”
Much to the Holy Court’s astonishment, black fire emerged from the volcanic core. It flew toward the Pokémon, severely injuring them. They cried out, feeling pain unlike that ever felt before. Only one Pokémon still stood, and it knew Dialga had to be stopped immediately.
“I must retreat…into the ashes!” Ho-oh cried out, diving into the bubbly pit of the volcano. A moment later, jets of white flame spouted from it, crashing into Dialga.
“No! Stop now!”
“It has to be done, Dialga! You must be subdued!”
The fire was seemingly endless to Dialga, who had grown accustomed to the coldness of the shadows.
Dialga screamed, causing a heavy chunk of the mountain to break off and tumble to the ground. The echo was heard for a full minute.
When the sound had finally faded away, Dialga lay unconscious and covered in hardening lava. By the time the Holy Court regained consciousness, it would be completely immobilized by the cool magma that would take its place. However, one of their own would be missing from their ranks, a martyr who paid the ultimate price to save those it cared about.

“Attention! This special organized meeting of the Holy Court now comes to order.”
Dawn was rising over Mt. Coronet. Arceus had gathered the remaining members of the Holy Court, and Dialga lay immobile at its feet, its body encased in magma. Arceus placed a front paw on Dialga, releasing the Pokémon’s head from its casing.
“The trial begins.”
Chapter 14—Judgment Day
Arceus stepped forward, glaring powerfully at Dialga.
“Dialga. You have been charged with treason, multiple counts of assault upon members of the Holy Court, and the most grave of offenses, one count of assault against your High Lord Arceus. I will give you a moment to state your case, but you must know that all of us here are aware of the true events of the past day. I am the judge here, and it must be painfully obvious what verdict I shall give. Now, give us your plea. Are you innocent? Or are you…guilty?”
Dialga brought its head up a bit to face Arceus head-on. It leaned back its head and spat violently at Arceus.
“Guilty.”
The other Pokémon gasped in shock and disgust. Dialga had admitted to its crimes!
“Very well.” Arceus struck the ground with a forepaw, and blinding white light began to seep through the newly formed cracks in the ground. Suddenly, the light grew into a circle that enclosed Dialga and Arceus, leaving everyone else outside of it.
“We must leave!” Giratina yelled. “That Light of Judgment… It is unsafe for our eyes.” Giratina left with the other Pokémon through a void to another dimension, where they watched the judgment occur from a safe distance.
Little by little, the light began to climb up its invisible boundaries until a sphere of pure white surrounded Dialga and Arceus. There was no way in and no way out—the time had come to give Dialga his sentence.
“Let me go!” Dialga yelled, attempting to release a Roar of Time. However, nothing emerged from its vocal chords.
“This is my domain, Dialga,” the High Lord whispered. “I am the only one who may issue attacks here. You are powerless.”
Dialga stared at Arceus, realizing that there was no way out.
“So, Dialga,” Arceus began, “you have decided to admit to your crimes—nay, your sins. You decided to attack the other members of the Holy Court, Pokémon that trusted you and looked to you in times of need. How dare you abandon them for your own pleasures! So now, you shall be punished!”
Arceus leaned back to his rear paws, inhaling deeply. The rough sound of his inhalation scraped against Dialga’s ears, turning into a painful shriek.
A white orb began to form at the front of Arceus’s open mouth, vibrating due to the shrieking of the Pokémon’s vocal cords.
“No…” Dialga whispered, feeling the raw power of the High Lord.
“You shall pay for your sins, Dialga!!!”
Arceus closed its mouth, focusing all of the energy into one point.
The orb filled with pure white light…
Nothingness.
“It must be happening…” Giratina gasped in awe from in the other dimension. “Dialga is facing its ultimate consequence…”
The blinding light began to darken.
“It is over…uh…”
Giratina’s voice trailed off. It stammered as fringes of ink-black splashed across the blank canvas that was the orb.
Something…
…that entered into nothing…
From that moment on, everything that happened was a blur for Arceus.
A shadowed hand emerged…
An attack; shrieking cries of pain and shock.
“But how?”
“Arceus,” the voice whispered, a voice unmistakably belonging to Darkrai, “I am a part…of you…”
Then…pure blackness.
Nothing…on the opposite side of the spectrum; from pure white to pure black.
The shadows and the light faded as an ensemble, leaving only the background of Mt. Coronet below the High Lord.
Giratina flew down. Darkrai was gone, but Dialga’s corpse remained, cold and lifeless. However, another body remained still…
…that of Arceus.
Kurt. I mean, kurt. I've read this and that on the site in fan fiction and i mean, its good but.
This is good.
It takes a lot to impress me, and i loved it. At first i thought the concept of pokemon talking was a little on the lame side, but after reading it, i absolutely love it.
It is really, really good. You've gotten me hooked, and i'm a hard audience. ^_^
You have talent, my friend. Keep writing, and i shall keep reading.

The bodies of Dialga and Arceus remained still. The Pokémon returned to their original world, and members of the Holy Court frantically ran to treat Arceus.
“Stand back, all of you!” Giratina’s voice boomed. The other Pokémon did as they were told.
“High Lord…please…wake up…”
Chapter 15—Storms on the Horizon
The High Lord’s body shuddered as Giratina inched closer.
“Arceus…? Are you…awake?”
One of the High Lord’s eyes flickered open. A low grunt rumbled in its throat.
“He is awakened!”
The Pokémon surrounding the field erupted in jubilant cheer.
“Calm down,” Regigigas boomed, raising a hand to silence the crowd. “The skies aren’t without clouds just yet—the High Lord may still be sustaining serious injuries. Stay back, and let us help the High Lord.”
The Pokémon heeded its words and stood silently, watching as the High Lord slowly got to its feet before shuddering again and taking a knee to the ground. Giratina took a step back, giving Arceus its space.
“What…happened…?” Arceus grunted through pained wheezing.
“Get up.”
Darkrai stood with its leg-like appendages inside a small, damp cavern on the edge of a rock face. A light wind gave an eerie tone to the dark night air.
“I said, get up!”
Darkrai kicked at the Pokémon laying in front of it—a Skarmory, and it stirred, awakening at last.
“Wh-who are you?”
Darkrai grunted with slight annoyance. “You don’t know me? Allow me to introduce myself—I am the mighty, powerful being known as Darkrai! I have come here as a recruiter. Join me, and you shall be powerful, as well.”
“I don’t believe it,” Skarmory squawked with skepticism. “How do I know you’ll really help me? Show me your power!”
“If you insist,” Darkrai chuckled. It retracted its appendages and floated to the shadowed back wall of the cave, knelt down, and plucked up a small Rattata, holding it by the tail.
“Watch and learn…”
“This has gone on for far too long,” Giratina said with a hushed voice. “We have to act now and stop this madness.”
“Well, what are…we…to do?” Arceus grunted. “I don’t want…all of my creations…to die in the strife…”
“Is there really any other option?” Giratina pondered.
“We have to fight,” Regigigas concluded, and Giratina nodded in acceptance.
“All right,” said Arceus with a sigh. “Tomorrow at the break of dawn, we prepare for war.”
Skarmory stood in shock, staring at the Rattata now dangling limply from Darkrai’s outstretched hand. Just moments before, it had been filled with life, and now…it appeared as if it had never lived at all.
“Impressive, is it not?” Darkrai asked. A light sound came from Skarmory’s throat; little else could be produced.
“So, have I won you over, my dearest creature? Will you accept my invitation?”
“Ye-yes,” Skarmory stuttered.
“Very good,” Darkrai said, a smirk growing on its face. It tossed the Rattata aside and held out a flattened palm, facing toward Skarmory.
“Don’t worry,” it reassured the newcomer, “this should only hurt a bit.”
The first rays of light struck the surface of Mt. Coronet, and Rayquaza flew like a jet over the morning sky, bellowing loudly.
“Everyone, wake up and assemble for battle immediately!”
Panicked Pokémon flocked toward the mountain, gazing up at the troop of legendary Pokémon that stood at the crest.
“We are all gathered here today,” Rayquaza began, “to initiate battle with our opposing forces—those of Dark Lord Darkrai. As most of you know, Darkrai and those aligned with it are a menacing force to our existence and must be stopped, at any cost…including the cost of life. Leave your emotions at home; this will require that you are not affected by grief, fear, or stress. You may ask why we are not asking whether or not you want to even be a part of this war. It may be a pain to realize this, but frankly, there is no choice in this matter for you or for us. You may stay behind if you wish, but just know that if you do, this will be the last sunrise you see, because the dark forces will strike the unprotected tonight, knowing that we are on our way, presuming we haven’t reached them by then. You can sit back and be dead within a matter of hours, or you can fight for your lives and your freedom from the darkness.”
Rayquaza paused for a moment, letting its morbid words sink in. It turned back toward the High Lord and the other Pokémon on the crest.
“Well, are we ready?”
The other Pokémon nodded, and the High Lord got to its feet, tilting its head to the sky. It opened its mouth and gave a deep, powerful roar:
“The war begins!!!”

“Keep walking, troops!”
Rayquaza flew over the troops in a snaking pattern, barking orders like a commander.
“Easy for you to say…” one of the Pokémon in the ranks called out with a laugh. Rayquaza didn’t take the joke lightly. It immediately found the source of the outburst and sped down to look it in the eye.
“Our world is at stake here. If you wish to mouth off, so be it; enjoy living in shadows for the rest of your pathetic existence. Pardon me for trying to do something about it.”
The Pokémon stared back in a mixture of awe and shock, keeping silent.
“Now march!”
Chapter 16—Broken Silence
Ahead of the centralized group, the Holy Court led the assault.
“What is the plan, High Lord?” asked Lugia.
“Attack. Win. Retreat.”
“Th-that’s it?” Regigigas asked.
“That’s it. I want as little blood shed as I can help.”
The Court walked on, silently contemplating this plan of action.
“Don’t you think it’s going to be a little harder than that?” Giratina finally asked after several moments of awkward tension.
“Why would it be any harder?”
Giratina looked at Regigigas, and the two exchanged confused expressions.
“But, sir, what if—?”
Arceus turned around and faced the two of them.
“It will not be any harder. The moment you start believing that…the moment it comes true.”
The only sound from then on was the crunch of the dry ground under the Pokémon’s feet.
A dull flash appeared from overhead. Seconds later, thunder cracked threateningly, ringing in the ears of the Pokémon. The skies darkened.
Arceus stopped moving. The other Pokémon began to line up behind him, and members of the Holy Court took to each side. They looked to their High Lord for his word.
“It begins.”
The vivid light of the sun was now shrouded under the cover of dusky clouds. Rain began to fall, colliding with the arid land with echoing plops. The thunder rumbled at a more consistent rate, and before long, the entire world seemed to be inundated.
“Show yourself.”
“No need to be so rude about it…”
A figure slid up from the darkness, rising from the very depths of the earth.
“Darkrai.”
“Arceus.”
A bolt of thunder shot to the ground just near the two Pokémon. Darkrai and Arceus crossed the divide between each other as if the thunderbolt was a gong signaling the start of battle.
Darkrai’s hand clawed at the High Lord’s neck, causing the Pokémon to scream in fright and fear.
“Don’t just stand there,” Rayquaza yelled, diving toward the two, “fight!!”
Realizing their duty, the Pokémon charged toward Darkrai.
“You have no chance!” Rayquaza boomed to the Dark Lord. “You’re outnumbered?”
“Am I?” it retorted.
Darkrai leapt back to provide distance between himself and Arceus. It waved its hand parallel to the ground and lifted its face to the sky.
Shadows began to appear on the already dark earth.
“Rise!”
The Pokémon watched as a multitude of figures began to emerge from the shadows. Their silhouettes developed into full Pokémon with fierce expressions and menacing postures. When they had all risen, Rayquaza looked out onto the flat field, now fully covered in a sea of black bodies.
“Sh—”
The utterance was drowned out by the booming thunder overhead.
“Attack!” Darkrai yelled over the cacophony of sound.
The shadow Pokémon lunged at their opponents. In mere seconds, the battle developed from a tense standoff into a violent struggle. Pokémon clawed, tackled, and sent attacks toward their opponent with all their might.
“Stop this, Darkrai!” Arceus commanded. He jumped into the air and let off a powerful burst of energy in the Dark Lord’s direction. Darkrai disappeared, rematerializing a mere foot from Arceus.
“Dark Pulse!”
The attack sent Arceus hurtling into the sea of Pokémon following him. They helped him back to his feet, and he stood glaring at the foe.
“Judgment!!”
The battle below faded into nonexistence. The only objects that remained were Arceus, Darkrai, and a never-ending white universe. Darkrai’s eyes were reduced to slits as it recoiled from the sudden lack of shadow.
“The end is near!” Arceus yelled. He dug his right front foot into the field of white, causing a click to echo from his hoof. The sound reverberated for what seemed like an eternity to Darkrai, who knelt down and covered its ears, wincing in pain.
“Prepare yourself!”
Arceus reared back, and the whiteness behind him rippled, morphed by the sheer power of the High Lord’s attack. A shrill noise emanated from Arceus’s body, grating at Darkrai’s ears.
“I sentence you to feel all of the suffering that we Pokémon have felt due to your actions!”
Darkrai looked up, and Arceus saw the pain filling its dark eyes.
“It had to be done,” the High Lord whispered.
“Stop.”
The whiteness flickered away, and Arceus and Darkrai returned to the field from which they had been moments before. Darkrai collapsed on the ground, disappearing in a wispy puff of smoke. Meanwhile, Arceus flew toward the east.
I can’t fly…what happened…?
Arceus looked back toward his original position to see a navy blur heading toward him. Before he could act, the Pokémon was all over him, attacking forcefully and without mercy.
It all happened so quickly…
Dialga, still affected by its change in alliance, uttered vile words between attacks.
“Never.”
A roar.
“Attack.”
A slash.
“My.”
Another roar. Arceus closed its eyes.
“Dark.”
A flash of blindingly silver light.
“Lord.”
Splash.
Arceus felt a suddenly cool shock as he collided with what felt like a body of water. He forced his eyelids to open; the blurriness once seen on Dialga was now completely surrounding him, this time a result of water instead of time. Arceus watched as the blue hues surrounding him were tainted by a deep crimson. The colors merged into an inky violet before morphing into a myriad of colored spots. The High Lord’s eyelids flickered shut again, making the universe devoid of color as he faded into unconsciousness.

“The High Lord is injured! Move!”
As Arceus hit the water’s surface, the scene turned to absolute chaos as the other Pokémon watched their leader fall. Dialga hovered over the lake, watching over it to assure that no one tried to be heroic and save him from his watery doom.
“Your High Lord is no more!”
Chapter 17—A Change of Heart
Upon Dialga’s powerful words, the crowd gasped in disbelief and fear. The Holy Court stood with composure, however, attempting not to show their real emotions to those watching them.
“Dialga! Stand down immediately,” ordered Giratina.
Dialga retorted with a scoff.
“I don’t take orders from you any longer.”
Giratina spread its black wings and looked straight into Dialga’s eyes.
“Then I’m sorry I have to do this to you.”
With a mighty roar, Giratina procured a portal directly between itself and Dialga, and both were sucked inside. As quickly as it had appeared, the portal vanished into nothingness.
“Now!”
Taking advantage of the moment of peace, Lugia dove into the water to search for Arceus. The surface was chilly, but upon diving deeper, the water grew warmer with the heat of blood.
“High Lord…where are you…?”
Dialga moved its eyes out of direct contact with Giratina’s dark pupils and looked around, taking note of its new surroundings. All around it was a vast expanse of blue space dotted with platforms that jutted out at every angle. Dialga watched in surprise as the platforms shifted before his eyes, some disappearing altogether.
Suddenly, crimson spikes dug into Dialga’s side, causing it to let out a roar of pain. A serpentine silhouette slithered past as Dialga fell onto a platform below. As it struggled back to its feet, the platform shifted, sending Dialga into the open air once more.
This has to stop, Dialga thought as it fell. Its body patterns began to glow and a translucent orb began to form around the legendary Pokémon. It glimpsed Giratina flying straight toward it, but gradually, time slowed down until Giratina had stopped moving altogether. Dialga relaxed its muscles, letting time continue at its current pulse.
“Now I can avoid yelling at you to stop,” Dialga said with a sneer. Restrained by the slow rhythm of time, Giratina could do nothing but watch as Dialga spoke. “Hear my words, Giratina, you filthy scum. You and your pathetic band of lunatics have no chance of winning this petty war. Dark Lord Darkrai has an immeasurable amount of power, and what does your leader have?” Dialga paused to let Giratina respond, knowing it wouldn’t due to the abnormal flow of time.
“High Lord Arceus is more powerful than Darkrai could ever hope to be. Even the littlest Remoraid in the sea is more powerful than Darkrai could ever hope to be.”
As Giratina spoke, Dialga stammered in shock. How can it speak? Shouldn’t the disrupted time prevent it from doing so?
“Surprised to hear me speak, aren’t you?” Giratina spoke confidently, reading Dialga’s emotions through its facial expressions. “Your antics are useless in the Distortion World. Did you think I would even fathom bringing you here and letting you defeat me? This is my domain. I think it’s about time you left.”
With its final words, Giratina roared and slammed into Dialga. The spikes on Giratina’s body dug into Dialga’s side as it coiled around its body.
“Now you are the immobile one,” Giratina said. It began to constrict, compressing Dialga’s room to move.
“Let…me…go…” Dialga grunted through pained breaths.
Giratina squeezed tighter until it felt Darkrai’s body go limp.
“Gladly.”
Dialga slid out from Giratina’s hold and began to fall.
“Not so fast,” Giratina said, even though Dialga was unconscious. Giratina vanished and reappeared a moment later directly under Dialga, striking in the shadows. Dialga’s immobile body hit a platform with a resounding thump, and its body vanished into wispy threads.
“I won the battle,” Giratina thought aloud, “but the war has yet to be won.”
Back on Earth, the Pokémon had rushed to the water’s edge, waiting for a sign that their High Lord was all right. Lugia had dived into the lake several long moments ago, and it had not yet returned to the surface.
“I hope the High Lord is okay…” one of the Pokémon said with worry. None of the other Pokémon replied to console it. They all were thinking the same thoughts.
After another seemingly eternal wait, the surface of the water broke and Lugia’s head popped out.
“I found the High Lord.”
The Pokémon were silent, waiting for the news as to whether Arceus was dead or alive. Lugia sighed before speaking.
“He’s unconscious…but he appears to be fine. I need help lifting him to the surface.”
Several Holy Court members shifted uneasily, realizing that if they jumped into the water, they would be left just as immobile as their High Lord due to their massive weights.
“I can help!”
The crowd of Pokémon turned to the surprisingly tiny voice. It was Manaphy, guardian of the seas. It jumped into the water and smiled back at everyone before diving down with Lugia to find the High Lord.
“There he is,” Lugia said through telepathy to Manaphy. Manaphy swam down and sat on Arceus’s cold body. Its body began to grow in a bright red hue, and Lugia realized that it was using Heart Swap to heal the High Lord.
“Manaphy…you couldn’t possibly revive Arceus…”
“I can,” Manaphy responded, “but it comes with a price.”
“But…Manaphy…”
“I have to make the sacrifice. For my High Lord.”
Manaphy’s glow grew to an intense level, and Arceus began to glow in the same manner.
The High Lord’s eyes opened.
“Arceus…” Lugia said breathlessly. “You’ve returned!”
Without a word, Arceus swam quickly to the surface. Lugia followed. As it ascended, it brushed past an object.
“What’s…happeni…”
Lugia’s body involuntarily stopped moving, and its eyes fell shut.
Far away, a gruff voice beckoned.
“Rise, my minions…rise from your deep slumber…”

Lugia opened its eyes to see a blurry world of blue all around it. It recognized such a view as the middle of a large body of water.
I feel…so stiff…
Lugia attempted to turn around and begin its ascension to the surface, but found with a shock that it could not move.
“Hello? Anyone?”
The Pokémon’s cries fell on deaf ears. Lugia sat in shock and fear, wondering what had happened…
Chapter 18—Rising Storm
The Pokémon at the water’s edge were now overcome with elation as their High Lord’s moving body appeared in the murky water below. They moved back from the shoreline as he leapt out of the water.
“Stay back,” Giratina ordered before the other Pokémon had a chance to approach Arceus.
The High Lord looked at them momentarily before letting out a powerful yell toward the sky, announcing his return. The other Pokémon cheered in jubilance.
…
Rise…
…
Lugia’s eyes darted around in their sockets, their possessor unable to turn its head to look at its watery surroundings. It strained its muscles, attempting to move, but was somehow rooted to the spot…a spot several feet underwater.
“You seem…afraid,” a small voice said.
Lugia’s mood lightened, recognizing the voice as that of Manaphy. It tried to respond, but found its words were just as restricted as its movements. Manaphy swam in front of Lugia in order to be seen.
“Hello, Lugia. Are you afraid?” It came a little closer. “Why? You have nothing to fear…”
Manaphy smirked.
“Close your eyes, Lugia. It will all be over soon, for you…for everyone. Just like it is for me.”
Lugia looked on in horror as Manaphy’s visage contorted and became the crooked face of Darkrai.
“Look there,” it whispered. Suddenly, Lugia’s head snapped sideways, now facing down into the lake’s murky depths to where Arceus had risen and Manaphy fallen moments ago.
“Do you see your friend, Lugia? No. It has reached its end.”
Darkrai flung out its arm, and a cloud of shadows billowed out. Manaphy struggled inside them, trapped in their grasp.
“Any last words, Manaphy?”
Manaphy tried to cry out, but the strength of its bonds coupled with its weakness due to its Heart Swap with Arceus proved too much for it. The small Pokémon sighed and leaned forward, falling into a black unconsciousness. The shadows engulfed Manaphy before disappearing back from whence they came, all while Lugia stared on in horror, unable to act against it.
“Now, Lugia,” Darkrai sneered…
Darkrai’s body too was engulfed by the same shadows that took Manaphy moments ago, and the silhouette inside transformed into Dialga’s form.
“…Close your eyes, Lugia. Your end shall be quick and painless.”
As Dialga’s mouth opened, Lugia closed its eyes not as a sign of obedience or compliance, but as an act of bracing for the attack.
Dialga’s roar overtook Lugia’s hearing, its thoughts, its being…
…then…
…the sound suddenly faded into the far distance…
…
Rise!
…
The earth cracked under the crowd of Pokémon’s feet. The wind picked up, throwing sand into the now-stinging air. Then, tremors began to develop from underground, thrusting all of the Pokémon from their feet to the broken terrain. As they regained their composure, they saw the sea’s waves begin to crash violently against the shore, leaving a cold mist in the air. The sky quickly blackened as the effects of both sides, of the land and the sea, intensified. Blasts of lightning split this natural war in two, and its thunderous cries pealed in the clouds and rang in the ears of the Pokémon.
“Rise!”
Two growls, though different in pitch, echoed in intensity. There was no mistaking what had occurred.
Mew looked at Heatran, who had fallen beside it from the storm.
“Groudon… Kyogre…
“The legendary beasts are reawakened…”
Someone remind me to update this more than one every season or so, lol. I would like to start my next fanfic soon, so hopefully that'll motivate me. Feel free to leave comments on the new chapter! ^_^
