I wasn't sure what forum to post this in...I figured, "well, it's a team, might as well put it here". I'm starting a red vs blue tournament in a few months at my school (mostly for kicks and nostalgia) via pokemon stadium (who still owns their gameboy adapter?), and looking back at it now, competitive game play was disturbingly different than it is now. No more IV's, Natures, EV's (I think), move pools of doom, or any real physical sweep; and every special attacker was a special defender. So I had to grind my gears to try and think a team up, I'm mainly going off of move pools, attacking strategy, and opponents faced. Maybe in the final showdown we could play ubers xD (mew and mewtwo ARE the uber tier)

Genger: Hypnosis-Thunderbolt-Mega Drain-Explosion
What he does here isn't any different than what he does now. Status's the opponent and books it, unless he can destroy it. Normal Sponge

Alakazam: Psychic-Recover-Thunderwave-Siesmic Toss
The threat of Red/Blue. When you think of him, I want you to think of garchomp without an ice weakness, with recovery. He can hit hard with his STABB and toss out what he can't. Recovering when the coast is clear and t-waving things when he's out of ideas xP.

Rhydon: Earthquake-Rock Slide-Body Slam-Substitute
Primarily an electric sponge. Psyical tank? Status Sponge? A must have on any team.

Zapdos: Thunderbolt-Drill Peck-Thunderwave-Agility
Earthquake sponge, and a mix sweeper. I was iffy on the last move, I figured some support would be needed. If anyone has a suggestion, it'd be appreciated. Oh, and this tourny goes by tiers, not pokefarmness.

Tauros: BodySlam-Hyperbeam-Earthquake-Blizzard
The pysical sweep of R/B. Hyperbeam is physical here, I believe and blizzard is there to hit what he really can't. Mixed sweeping? xP doubt it.

Starmie: Surf-Psychic-Blizzard-Recover
Starmie has never really changed...except here she's somewhat more of a threat. I debated on the attacks, and I'm considering throwing out recover for thunderbolt. Psychic is necessary to deal with gengar and other psychic's, nuff said. Surf is for coverage and STABB and Blizzard is for grass and Dragons...>.> <.< Dragon?...dragonite...xP

The biggest thing to hold in consideration is my opponents, about 99.99% will have either charizard, blastoise, or venasaure on their team, as well as dragonite. Starmie owns all four xD. I can also expect gengar to be rampant, as well as Pigiot (starmie continues to own...). Having the birds uncanged I can expect to face all 3 at once xP. What else was there a tendancy towards...nidoking perhapes? What are your sentiments?

EDIT:
Considering "fly" could be a potential problem, should I replace some tbolts with full blown thunder? And what are some well known unusual quirks r/b/y has? Something about hyper beam not needing a recharge if it kills and it's pysical, delayed counters that hit ghosts, and more. >.>

Charizard is popular. I also liked my beedrill. It used to be awesome against ghosts :D

But we have Stadium 2, where I loved my raikou, espeon and umbreon :p

Tangela was too good, as was slowbro, until tournaments banned amnesia. Considering it was special, not special atk or defense (there was no difference) it doubled your special and tangela had a really high defense and hp. as did slowbro.
here were some mad good pokemon
Dragonite: t-wave, wrap, Ice beam, Surf
Persian: Slash (it crit more often than not), t-wave, hyperbeam, [insert move here]
Starmie: Psychic, Thunderbolt, Surf, Recover
Alakazam: Psychic, Recover, Thunderbolt, Ice Punch (yay gold version!)
Tauros: EQ, HYPER BEAM, Bodyslam/t-wave, and [insert move here]
Tangela: Sleep Powder, Leech Seed, Amnesia, Giga Drain
Slowbro: Amnesia, Flamethrower, Surf, Ice Beam

wrap dragonite is insane! xP I doubt the greatness of tangela though, and slowbro never caused much difficulty. The real authority in red/blue was starmie,it took me until I started playing diamond competitivly to realize this, I remember when I was 10, I was like, starmie? Forget that I gots a blastoise, now I'm like...nice....If only we could battle xD. There has to be a red/blue shoddy battle out there!

So...erm...I'm not getting any real suggestions here, is my team that super awesome or something? xD

Ideas/Changes will be in bold But back to R/B/Y version. This is definitely a blast from the past lol.

Genger: Hypnosis-Thunderbolt-Mega Drain-night shade
I don't know if gengar will survive enough to use explosion. I always thought night shade was good. I think having a poison type attack would be good too for STAB

What he does here isn't any different than what he does now. Status's the opponent and books it, unless he can destroy it. Normal Sponge

Alakazam: Psychic-reflect-Thunderwave-Siesmic Toss
I'm thinking reflect for team support. Especially in a competitve setting it may come in handy. Zam may not survive some hits to even use recover effectively.

This is a good set. Strong and effective =)
Primarily an electric sponge. Psyical tank? Status Sponge? A must have on any team.

Zapdos: Thunderbolt-Drill Peck-Thunderwave-Agility
I don't use legendaries in normal play so I can't give any advice here. But judging from what I see this looks like a good set. Maybe replace agility with sand attack? That helped me in stadium

Tauros: BodySlam-Hyperbeam-Earthquake-Blizzard
Good set here =)
The pysical sweep of R/B. Hyperbeam is physical here, I believe and blizzard is there to hit what he really can't. Mixed sweeping? xP doubt it.

Starmie: Surf-Psychic-Blizzard-Recover
Very good set here too. Nicely thought out and effective. Although I wouldn't underestimate the power of Venusaur. I've used some in today's generation to take out Starmie. Venusuar can really take a lot of hits and Starmie is naturally weak to saur's attacks as well. So becareful.

pretty good but you need a mewtwo/mew.

Paiopa

Why would they need either of those?

Slizer107

Well mewtwo would be a good choice as its special in red and blue could go above 1000!

Meh. It's Uber...and a really good trainer should be able to win without the help of such a powerhouse =\

I know the exact ((mostly) legit) method to get a mew in first-gen, if anyone's interested.
Also, I think it's a great team. I still have the GB adapter, and Stadium, though I haven't played in a while (not since I finally lost my Blue with two mews and 15 MissingNo.'s and my Yellow crashed from excessive GameShark use years ago (before I rose above cheating)). I've temporarily moved on to Colosseum.

Erm...thanks everyone, more notably paiopa.

Night Shade, though it is a 100% chance hit with STABB, will probably only be used against bugs and grass types, but could provide awesome neutral hits. Unfortunantly, my goal with this Gengar is to have him be used primarily as a starter, then a counter. Sleep the first one, and take on the next...or run like mad...Gengar has enough speed to blow up anything I'm smart enough to let it, so no real problems. *think of him as mainly a revenge exploder*

Reflect on Zam will be tested and considered, though I do like the idea of recovery.

As for sand attack, this mild tourny I'm running will have an evasion, sleep and freeze clause (maybe wrap clause?) so...no xP and @ people considering mew and mewtwo, they are ubers, so no. Mew might be allowed in the club *I'll have to look him over* above all else mewtwo is not allowed, he's two good.

The way things are now (apart from zam's recovery and zap's agility) I think my team's pretty solid. Maybe in a day or so I'll put up my UU tier team idea xD

snorlax isn't bad.

Paiopa

Well, I suppose that gengar set will work fine too Brown. I see the reason behind it so good luck with it =)

Let me know how the recovery thing works on zam. Since, this is r/b/y version maybe using some of the elemental punches will greatly assist you as well :)

I also noticed something for Starmie. You have blizzard, which is definitely a powerful attack but maybe using ice beam might be better? It's a lot more accurate and if blizzard misses against a grass type then you're really in trouble. It's really up to you if you want the higher power, but higher accuracy is always something too good to pass up ;)

As for sand attack I see. Ok scrap that idea then lol. But probably scrap t-wave from Zapdos as well. You have it on zam already so another t-waver seems kinda pointless. Agility is nice, but Zapdos has excellent speed to begin with you might not need it as much. It's important to have some support for the rest of your team so I would go with reflect or light screen (depending on whether you think you have a higher weakness to physical or special attacks) to replace t-wave and maybe replace agility with whirlwind? Zapdos is definitely fast so if you see something that's not zapdos-friendly just blow it away lol. You'll also annoy your opponents who think they can stat-boost their way to victory. That's always fun lol ;)

And like Kelog mentioned, Snorlax can really be a good pokemon to use as well. Very reliable and can help bide you time to think of a strategy in case you're in a jam. If you do plan on using Snorlax, maybe replace him with Rhydon to avoid the double grass weakness in your team. Or replace him with one of your special sweepers to have both Rhydon and Snorlax as defensive support.

I don't mean to be very critical here in my post (and apologize for it being long) but I'm just offering suggestions. It's really up to you what you want to do in the end, but I hope these give you some new ideas on how you can really structure your team. Best of luck in your tourny ^_^
