I have an old GBA and a slew of DS Lites. I have fire red and leaf green. I wanted to restart my leaf green but I wanted to transfer my pokes in leaf green to fire red so id have an easier go at it.
What hardware do I need to accomplish said feat?

From what I understand, you need 2 GBA's and a link cable. I don't think that the cables are compatible at all with the DS's..
Also, depending on the GBA you may need 2 cables - someone else may be able to shed more light on this...

You just need a GBA link cable and two GBA or SP's to link them with. The wireless support isn't compatable with the 3rd gen. games and there isn't a compatable port for the link cable in the DS lite. I got a second GBA for $25 and a link cable just so that I could transfer them from my LG to Emerald. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that's the only way you can transfer them from one Gen. 3 game to another.

Mind if I inquire where you acquired the cable and second gameboy?
Could I use a GBA micro and and GBA Sp?

I got the second GBA from Gamestop and the cable from a local game store called Gamers. I'd assume that GameStop would have the cables too since they stock the system, but you'd have to call your local and ask. The cable I have was from a 3rd party but it works fine, it cost me $5 used.
I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think you can link a micro to a GBA. Look at this link (http://www.gameboy-micro.com/accessories.htm), but I think it says that they never came out with at least one of the various cables you'd need to do that. You can try reading for yourself, maybe it'd make more sense to you since it sounds like you have more experience with a Micro than I do.

It is pretty easy to still purchase a GBA sp used, and many of them come with the link cable. I bought mine at a local garage sale and also bought 2 wireless adapters so I could link that way. I do believe the link cable is way easier to obtain though. There are tons of them on my local "Craigs List" and even more on Ebay if you want to go that direction.
I do not see a way for the two systems -micro and GBA sp to link unfortunately..:(

I don't know about micros but isn't there a wireless connector that works with FR/LG? Used ones cost less than $15AUD here.

Yes it came packeged with new copies of fr/lg and works with emerald aswell. Also i think they made a cable that fits the micro slot and can connect to gba sp or gba. I havent seen offical ones yet but i seen a few 3rd party ones at a shop called comet in uk.

YEs... I just found that out. Sps range from $65-$100 and traditionals are about $50.
For some reason I thought I could snag one for $20 , time to do more hunting.

Wow, that is craziness. All the stores around here that have a GBA sell them for $25 tops. Gamers sells them for $20. Crazy how much more expensive it is for some other parts of the world. I got mine a few weeks ago too...
SP's were $50 but they didn't have one in decent condition that I wanted to buy so I went with a normal old GBA.
Good luck finding one for a decent price. I wish I could make all the game stores have the same prices as they do here. I suppose there is at least one advantage to living in Nebraska...

Just picked up an old gameboy advance for $25. The adapters seem to be the same for file transfer. Now to find a cable....

I would try EB games, that have it in their "retro" section. Normally in a claer bag with a yellow top. About $10. The one near my house has it. Hope that helps:)

You can order a brand new cable from gamestop for 7.99. This one lets you link between gba's and sp's and also lets you link gba or sp to the gamecube. Ordered mine a few months ago, and it works lilke a charm. Here's the link:

Hope this helps! :)

I would do LG because I think it's more fun. Plus any game where you can catch Arcticuno is worth playing first. :-P lol

Yeah, I agree, it really depends which one you like the most or what pokes you want to capture

If you want Raikou, don't forget to start with Squirtle - the running pokemon is always the type that can supposedly beat your starter's
Charmander - Suicune
Bulbasaur - Entei
Squirtle - Raikou
I started with Squirtle for the same reason

I really wanted to start the game by transferring a bulbasaur and charmander to leaf green after selecting squirtle but I was too lazy. As it is I just soft reset for an Adamant squirtle.
But now I can SR for mewtwo, articuno, moltres, and zapdos. ^_^

This is a long way off, but a bit of advice on LG..
Make sure you have access to a Pokemon with Thief after you defeat the Elite 4!
On one of the Sevii islands that you can sail too after defeating the E4, there is an resort retreat filled with rich battlers that you can battle for easy cash. So far, so good, but their Pokemon are rumored to also carry Star Pieces! So not only can you defeat the trainers for cash, but you can also steal the held items for portable cash. I haven't actually been able to test this as I am without a Thief Pokemon in Gen III, but I have come across the refrence in several places.
I had already palparked up my Thief TM before I realized why it might be a bad idea. :( I really wish I knew this ahead of time every time I run out of money buying TMs in Emerald or Sapphire. If I had a ready supply of Star Pieces that I could trade around it would solve a lot of my cash flow problems in the 3rd Gen.

Get yourself a zigzagoon/linoone/skitty and train it up to learn Covet - just like Thief but more PP :p But.. that only works if you have a Hoenn game to trade with. Since between us my sister and I have all the Gen 3 games, I tend to forget that others aren't so lucky.
