I wanted to let you all know that I haven't forgotten at all about the EPFL!
I wanted to give you all a sneak peak at season 2!!
We will be looking at a 16 person season, with a more strict way to hold people accountable for participation.
There will be approximately 3 rounds of 'Modified Swiss' pairing and at that point we will make a cut to the top 4 and play it out single elimination like we did last time.
I want to experiment with the modified swiss pairing because it is something I'm familiar with as my past life was in Competative Magic: the Gathering. I'd like to see how it translates to Pokemon Battling.
We will be using lvl 50 (because 100 just took way too long) but will continue to do best 2 out of 3 battles.
We will also have set pokemon rosters to choose from (i mean, you get to build your own team and all, but limited to like 9 pokemon for the entire season - THIS IS AN EXAMPLE, Final number unknown)
The timing of this season will most likely be just after the first of the year, I want to give plenty of time for preparation and for those of you in school, this should encompass some sort of winter/holiday break so that some time can be spent preparing.
This will be a short season in regards to the number of battles completed, but will also give a very good indication of where the strengths and weaknesses are as each round of pairings will be against someone of a similar record.
I'm sticking to the number 16 as last time there were 22 (eventually about 24 different members) who signed up, and only 8 or 9 finished.
In this thread I'd like you to provide feedback on the idea - questions about any of it, and also the types of prizes that you feel would be adequate.

9 is, I believe when I tried to make a league, what everyone was o.k. with.
With 16 people and the last season I believe was stated to be like 6-8 weeks of battling with opponents assigned, best of 3 matches, I think the discussion on the INPL was for like a 12-16 week football style season, but nobody wanted to just battle with NU and everything folded.
Not trying to take away from your setup. It is the swiss pairing or whatever that you and Steve use a lot. I still don't seem to get that. It almost changes everytime I see it posted or atleast seems to me it is different.
Swiss style does what now?

The last EPFL season was just Round-Robin...everyone battled everyone else once.
The principle of a Swiss tournament is that each player will be pitted against another player who has done as well (or as poorly) as him or herself.
The first round is either drawn at random or seeded according to rating. Players who win receive a point, those who draw receive half a point and losers receive no points. Win, lose, or draw, all players proceed to the next round where winners are pitted against winners, losers are pitted against losers, and so on. In subsequent rounds, players face opponents with the same (or almost the same) score. No player is paired up against the same opponent twice however.
Looks like there will end up being 4 rounds of swiss, and then the top 4 duke it out.

Also - for those unfamiliar with the EPFL from last season, The biggest difference between battling here and battling in the gyms, is that Legendaries that are not in the UBER tier are allowed.
When a season is officially announced and sign-ups are being taken I will be sure to link the tier list as well so there is no confusion.
I think that the swiss style will allow us to get through more seasons in a quicker fashion, and really, it would let more people play as long as there was interest. (you can double the number of people accomodated by adding only 1 round so for 32 people, only 5 rounds are needed, for 64, 6 rounds, etc)

Only 4 out of 16 make it to the playoffs though? Maybe that is why the INPL never took off. I tried to make it football style in season and playoffs.
I lose nothing by entering, so I guess I could get in. I have to check out a more competitive team, but I have all next month to build after this current tournament.

What does a Swiss tourney entail exactly?

I think that would be a lot better than the round robin style. hopefully this will encourage those who sign up to stick with the league wholly, as instead of dropping out because of a few losses
man! i had a good streak running

Oh I see. I don't think I'll be able to participate then, since I'll be going on vacation during that time. Ah well. Maybe in season 3.
