A TRU Tournament

I mentioned in another thread that I was getting 2 TRU Dragonites and would have a tournament for one of them, well this is the tournament.

When:


December 19th - 21st

Sign ups end:


December 17th

Pokémon Usage:


NU/UU only
6 vs. 6

Poké Academy's Battle Tiers (http://forum.pokefarm.com/showthread.php?t=2162)

Clauses Species Clause


It is NOT permitted to have two or more of the exact same Pokémon in a team.
Pokémon from the same Family are however permitted (i.e. Pichu, Pikachu, and Raichu).

Duplicate Item Clause

No two Pokémon in the team may carry the same item.

Evasion Clause

Moves that directly increase evasion (such as Double Team and Minimize) are NOT permitted in battle.
Taking advantage of abilities such as Sand Veil and Snow Cloak are permitted. They are abilities, and do not directly affect evasion status.

Self-K.O. Clause


When both parties are down the last Pokémon,Self-K.O. moves (such as Explosion, Destiny Bond, Perish Song, Memento, etc.) will cause an automatic loss for its user.
Abilities such as Aftermath do not count since they are abilities and not moves.

Sleep Clause


It is NOT permitted that the status Sleep (SLP) be applied to more than one of the opponent's Pokémon at a time. The opponent's currently sleeping Pokémon must first awaken or get knocked out before Sleep may be cast on the opponent's Pokémon once again.
Applying the status Sleep while using random-selection movesdoes NOT violate this clause. (such as Assist, Metronome, Sleep Talk, etc.)
The move Yawn (unless used with moves such as Assist, Metronome, Sleep Talk, etc.) violates this clause.
Self-inflicted Sleep (such as Rest) does NOT count in this clause, as it is voluntarily inflicted by the user and not by the opponent.
If ability-inflicted Sleep (such as Effect Spore, etc.) is already in effect, applying Sleep to another Pokémon violates this clause

One-hit KO (O.H.K.O.) Clause


One-hit K.O. moves (such as Fissure, Guillotine, Horn Drill, Sheer Cold, etc.) are NOT permitted, as they hugely rely on chance and not skill.

As far as right now it should be double elimination, depends on the number of people entering.

If it is a low number it may be that you battle everyone and the one with the best points will win.

Sorry I forgot to address this. Your team does not have to be your own OT. As long as it follows the PokéFarm tiers of the UU/NU.

If there's one thing I've learned from my battle experiences so far, it's to be confident and not to immediately count yourself out. Once you start thinking you're gonna lose, you're gonna lose. Just do what I'll be doing: Get a team ready for battle and have fun with it. :-D

I am joking you trainers psych yourself out of the battles before they even happen.

When I was given the chance to run the Beacon Gym I thought I was toast. When I did alright there and went for the challenge of the Chrysalis Gym I thought for sure I would never win there.

90% of the game is mental, if you defeat yourself before the battle then you can and will make mistakes and cost yourself the battle.

Relax it is all for fun and it just so happens one person will win it all and get a prize.

Seeding is just a way to keep it fair when creating the brackets. Although I will be using The Hat program to select seeding, I guess I could just use it to select what 2 trainers go into bracket 1 and so on. So it would not seem like the seeding means one player is better then a lower seed.

I actually just installed The Hat a week or two ago (it's been on my computer for a while, but couldn't install it without being logged in to the computer's Admin. account); it seems to work pretty well. I'm planning on doing a tournament probably next month, and I'll be using that for sure.

The bracket was made because someone asked since there was not any new trainers joining the tournament then could I just make the bracket now.

The bracket is set to change anytime up to the 17th depending on if anyone else joins in.

Of course we just had one more join the tournament so that would eventually change the brackets. That is why I did not want to post the brackets until the 17th. It was said that nobody new has joined the tournament in awhile, but any talk in this thread is going to draw new attention to it and promote growth.

It is Pokémon listed on the NU/UU Tier, any that are not on the tiers are not considered NU/UU even if they are under-evolved forms.

No offense but this is PokéFarm and the tier listed on the first post has PokéFarm tiers.

Articuno's stats alone make it way to overpowered for the UU tiers, Smogon has it listed as UU because there are Pokémon that do the same thing but better.

Which this is not the place to debate this, but PokéFarm tiers are not fan favorite based.

Not that I pose a threat. I am just don't like battling in tournaments I am holding. Only reason I am doing so is to keep out a first round bye and if the bye comes in round two atleast the person won their battle for that bye.

I just realized that I'll be out of college for winter recess next week, so I'll have WiFi access again just in time to be able to participate in this tournament. Originally I thought it was going to be held much earlier in the month, but I was idly checking this thread to see who won and realized it hasn't started yet....

Will it mess the planning up if I enter now? Because if it's okay, I would like to participate, but I understand that it's very late notice for more people to enter. If it's too inconvenient for everyone else, I'll sit it out instead. No worries.

I have a question. What do you guys think of surprise battles? I would make the brackets based off of a seed #. Each battler would be PM'd their number and then your opponent would be a surprise.

I think Manaphy, Darkrai, and Dragonite was received pretty heavily, but Deoxys might have been a bit harder to get.

As long as it is NU//UU and is from the academy/battle pokefarm tiers, you can switch between every battle.

O.K. the updated brackets are done. Since some dropped out and new ones joined I redid the bracket. Don't worry about the seeding numbers, I was just playing around to see how things would look. The seeding numbers are just the number of which you were pulled from the Hat program.

As for posting the results, what WCN did for the water tourney was create a seperate thread instructing everyone to post their match up and the result, whether they won or lost.

Eg: match 1: A vs B (won or lost)

and so on..

I don't think it would have been, had it not fortuitously nabbed that shiny Life Orb. :P

Camembert made a great impression; it held out for seemingly ages! And I was sorry not to see Beatrice and Bongo in action. I've never faced either of those species before. Maybe we'll do a rematch sometime!

That's what I really like about playing UU-- I get surprises in battles. In OU it's always the same few species seen again and again, with movesets that are often pretty homogenous, because... well, they're overused. Whereas in UU, I keep encountering species and movesets I've rarely or never faced before. It's more creative and more unpredictable, which keeps the game fun and challenging.

Hope everyone has fun though. I am not trying to say UU are more fun, but I do like UU battles because anything can happen and it keeps each battle on edge.

With most OU battles you can kinda know from the beginning if you are out of luck or not. In the UU tiers there are not a ton of Pokémon that can outright trump other Pokémon, I mean the mix of Types being used usually does not leave a huge advantage.

Look at the bash the bug, Sogatani and Paiopa both had UU teams in a battle against my UU. Sorgatani won 0-3 and I beat Paiopa 2-0. Each battle could have went either way. For the most part the battles were decided by trainer tricks or mistakes.

Same goes for OU, but I just feel in UU it is more the trainer then the Pokémon since the UU are very close in stats and OU can be very one-sided.

Paiopa is still in this thing you. I don't underestimate his talent or his potential to win this thing. Right now he's 2-1 and if he wins his next 4 matches he could potentially surpass Cinder in points. Nevertheless, still has a long way to go and wants to face me last since we're rivals and such, so if he's 5-1 by that point, let the drama of scenarios begin.

I'm honestly not fussed about who wins. I'm pleasantly surpised I've done so well, but I joined for the fun of battling people in a tier I'm not completely horrible at, not particularly for the prize. In that sense, I win no matter what the final scores are. :D

I see BlueTempest has the least amount of battles. Should I remove BlueTempest and figure out the winner from the remaining battles?

I also believe Paiopa and Keitaro need to battle. I think Cinder is the only one with all 6 battles finished.

The key being that you have learn something. You should learn something from every battle you are in. I have had tons of battles and I still learn something in each battle.

If Paiopa wins that puts you Keitaro, and Paiopa in a 3 way tie with 6 wins and 1 loss. Going to points you see you have 20, Keitaro has 19, but would lose points in a loss, but Paiopa has 25 points already.

Man I thought I could cheer you up but by looking at the win/loss and points you can't pull out a win.

Bummer you battled great. I can't believe there were 3 trainings in the running in the end. I don't like doing the points thing, but I did it just in case results like this came up. If Paiopa wins though you came in 2nd, that is pretty awesome right there given UU and the level of your competition.

The tournament has definitely been exciting and fun and everyone has battled great. To be honest I'm surprised I've made it this far.

Keitaro and I will be scheduling our battle shortly so the results should be up soon. I think we both plan on recording our final match for youtube as well so everyone can watch. I don't know if he will agree with this or not but we'll see.

Personally I have no problem with it if you want to do that. I really felt like I played worse than my usual in our match. So for me, I think it would be interesting to go back and watch it after the fact, and try to analyze why I made certain decisions that I remember really kicking myself for. (Not that I'm trying to hedge my loss by saying that; you definitely beat me.) :)

Off-topic, but I've lately been wishing I could record battles myself too. Not necessarily for putting them on YouTube, but just to be able to watch them afterwards myself and analyze the moves I made. Watching other people's battles has helped me play better, I think, and it'd be pretty neat to do that with my own from kind of an outside perspective.

Cinder lost to Keitaro, Paiopa lost to Cinder, and Keitaro lost to Paiopa, there would have had to been a sudden death, but the points kept it fair this time.

Thanks Cinder! As for wishing to record your battles it's actually pretty easy. All you need is a webcam that has a focus ring and using any movie editing software such as windows movie maker. That's what I do to make my vids. Have a surface to place the webcam on and just record. I think I'll make a little tutorial vid about this so it's easier to explain. I've been getting a few questions about it so it should be fun.

...with one or two guest appearances by Sandslash (Celery).

The one thing I missed was Stealth Rock; without Celery this team lacks entry hazard support, but with her included it tends to suffer problems in other places, as she's not really meant for a support role. I just haven't finished training my other Sandslash.
