View Full Version : Season 2 - Round 1 Pairings

Here are the pairings for round 1!

I was able to find a good program for doing Swiss pairings, so we'll be good to go!

There will be 4 rounds of regular Swiss, and then a cut to the top 8. If anyone is familiar with Magic; the Gathering, it is the same way those tournaments are done. Pairings are based on current record, with the first round (below) randomly matched.

The top8 will be based on total points - here is how you get points:

Win a match: 3
Lose a match: 0
Draw a match: 1

Tie breakers will be revealed if needed, but there are plenty of tie breaking formulas in place :)

Hopefully I'll be able to get some snazzy spreadsheets up along the way, it shouldn't be too hard. Remember to fight best of 3 battles, and report the results (2-0, 1-2, etc) I would prefer that the losing player report the results to keep us all honest. Also copy your opponent on the PM when reporting. All the same rules from last season apply for reporting results.

Regardless, here are the pairings: Winners are marked in bold.

Match1: S Tailor v. Ice Tomb9
Match2: Rayfox-Kun v. Junee
Match3: Alirrath v. Wicked_Rapture
Match4: Cowmoo83 v. MeowthMix
Match5: Shiny Lucario v. Vasden2
Match6: Revelp8 v. Babael
Match7: Gouswer v. Whitdjinn
Match8: Bugcatcher6 v. Slizer107
Match9: Trombones13 v. **BYE**

We'll see how things progress, matches can begin NOW.

Tentative deadline is 1 week from then, Friday, January 9th.

Post here if there are any questions!

Please note the pairings have changed. there is a new participant. Battles can now begin, but be sure you're battling according to the new pairings, not the old ones.

There have been several matches reported already keep up the battles! The sooner they all get done, the next round will start the following day! Best of luck to all the battlers!

Quick question if in later round i get a bye does that mean you get 3 points or no points?

Whitdjinn

the bye will get 3 points as if it is a match win. I'm not going to penalize anyone for not having an opponent. It is treated as if you were matched against an opponent and they didn't show up.

Sweet; my first--and probably last--3.

It was 0-3. That one mistake at the start of the battle screwed me for the entire battle. I forgot Synchronize did not pass back Sleep. So that left me with a sleeping Pokémon and never getting Stealth Rock up, which would have helped when that one Shadow Sneak red-lined you instead of OHKO.

Still making minor mistakes and that aggravates me.

I am waiting on the decision, but I won the 2nd match 3-0 and the 3rd I believe I won 2-0.

slizer's last Pokémon looked to be fainting right as everything went blue.

I saw no HP left and I am pretty sure it was fainted.

Week 1:
slizer107 Vs. BugCatcher6
BugCatcher6 wins 2-1

Waiting for slizer to confirm.

Um not to sound rude, but how many wins and points do you get for a bye? :o

*points*

So, if I'm understanding correctly, I got three points, LOL.

Win a match get 3 points. You get 3 points just for a bye?

Could I bye my way into the playoffs? ;) Seriously I would need that much help to get in.

"Bye my way in..." *drums play rim shot*

I don't have that much confidence, either; I'm just doing it for more battle experience and to see how I fare. :-D Plus, I'm not dropping out now when I did in Season 1; I feel as though I owe it to Whit and last season's battlers to stick with it this time.

It is not a confidence thing with me. I go into every battle fully expecting to win. Although in real life I know my tactics are outdated. My Pokémon rusty. The fact that I managed to beat slizer has me excited.

One thing that helped me with slizer, was not my team. I used the same team minus 1 Pokemon and 3 item changes. Although I do study every battle and the Pokémon that I saw before and knew the tactics of, I was able to counter in the second and third battle.

Outdated tactics, minor mistakes, and old Pokémon I may have, but still learn from every battle and that is all I need.

Just a note - in future rounds the BYE only goes to the lowest placed player (or in the case of a tie, its random selection among those with the fewest points) so the Bye will have very little to do with actually making the top 8 or 4. Also, it is impossible, I believe for a player to get more than 1 bye in a tournament.

I know this has been explained, but we will be battling each member right? So technically you should only get a bye once.

No, this will not be a round-robin tournament. This is a swiss-style tournament where each round's pairings is based on your win/loss record until 4 rounds are completed. then the top 8 competitors will enter a single elimination bracket until we have a winner.

This way, we can narrow the field much more effectively and hold more seasons closer together!

O.K. he-he. I know you and Steve have explained it to death, but for some reason I just never get the hang of it.

So my next battle will be against someone with 6 points or better?

Sorry if you were waiting for me. My opponent's DS is malfunctioning at the moment, unfortunatley. I am not sure if it is going to be fixed in time... the problem sounds pretty serious.

It will be 3 points - there are 3 points for a win, 0 for a loss...feel free to check out any of the other threads dealing with Season 2, including the first post of this one :)

Your next battle will be against someone else with 1 win (3 points) most likely, unless we have an odd number of winners, at which point there will be 1 match that is someone that is 1-0 vs someone 0-1.

Ah I saw the 2-0 and 1-2 and thought it was 3 points for each win in the best of 3, but it is an overall win. Gotcha ;)

So.. If my opponent is unable to compete how does this affect the amount of points I receive, if any?

I'm waiting to hear from your opponent today regarding his DS. If cowmoo is unable to continue then he shall be dropped and there will no longer be a bye each round. This round would count as a win for you.

But like I said - I'm waiting to hear from him today.

Meowthmix - You are the winner of your match. Cowmoo83 has been forced to withdraw due to circumstances beyond his control (equipment issues)

Here is a suggestion, Trombones13 had a bye this round and now MeowthMix has a forfeit, couldn't they battle for points?

Whitdjinn
01-09-2009, 09:49 PM
Nope. They both get points.

EDIT: Let me expand a bit more. The pairings were randomly done according to this software and pairings cannot be 'forced'. Due to the nature of the swiss style tournament, there is very little lattitude for on-the-spot changes. This was the reason for the pairings to be redone when Kurt joined in under the wire (I simply jumped the gun getting the initial pairings done). Due to Cowmoo83 dropping, there will no longer be a bye in the future rounds, and it will proceed accordingly.

It was as if in the NCAA tournament two teams decided to just forfeit their matches to the opponents. The two teams that showed up do not simply play eachother, it impacts other things behind the scenes (Rating, seeding, tie breakers, etc)

We are waiting on Match 2? Any word from either?

I mean I am in no rush for the butt kicking I will most likely receive in Round 2.

It feels bad moving on without winning a match... Oh well, I'm sure I'll have fun in the next round.
